Field Service Management Software
Field service management software splits into two markets that share a name and almost nothing else. Confusing them wastes more selection time in this category than any feature question.
At one end is enterprise and industrial FSM, usually asset-centric, bought by organisations with hundreds of engineers, complex service contracts and an existing ERP or CRM it has to sit inside. Implementations run for months, pricing is quoted, and the real work is integration and scheduling optimisation. At the other end is trades software for contractors and small service businesses, often vertical-specific, frequently self-serve with published per-user pricing, and designed so an owner-operator can be dispatching jobs the same week.
A third group sits deliberately in between: scheduling and dispatch products designed to run alongside another system of record rather than replace it. They are the right answer when your customer and asset data already lives somewhere you are not replacing.
Every profile labels which of these a product is. Capability support is recorded as yes, no or not verified against a source, and this is a category where published pricing genuinely exists at the smaller end, so where a vendor states a figure it is recorded with the currency and billing period exactly as stated.

How to choose
How to choose in this category
Decide first whether FSM is even what you need. If the work is maintaining your own assets on your own sites, a maintenance system is usually the better fit, and FSM is scope you will not use. If the work is sending people to customers under a service agreement, FSM is right. Field service versus CMMS, and which you need works through the distinction properly, and it is the single most useful thing to read before shortlisting.
Test offline working, do not take it on trust. Almost every vendor in this category claims a mobile app and most claim offline support, but the behaviour that matters is what happens when a technician completes a job with no signal and reconnects an hour later with a conflicting update waiting. Ask for that exact demonstration. In researching this directory several vendors were found making contradictory offline claims in different places on their own sites, and where that happened the capability is recorded as not verified with the contradiction described rather than resolved in the vendor’s favour.
Score scheduling against your real constraints. Route optimisation demos beautifully on a clean map and struggles with skills matching, certifications, parts availability and multi-day jobs. Take your three hardest scheduling scenarios to the demo instead of letting the vendor pick.
Work out where the customer record lives. This is the integration that decides the architecture. If your CRM or ERP owns the customer, an FSM product that insists on owning it will create a reconciliation problem you will be managing for years. One-way versus two-way sync sets out the trade.
Check what SLA measurement actually means. At the enterprise end, contractual response and fix targets drive penalties. Field service KPIs, SLAs and contractor management covers what to measure and how these products differ in where the clock starts and stops, which is where disputes come from.
At the smaller end, read the pricing page carefully. Per-user pricing in this category frequently excludes the features that made you interested, and several vendors price by technician while charging separately for office users. Where a vendor publishes a figure, this directory records the unit and billing period as stated so the comparison is like for like.

Frequently asked questions
No. Every profile is documentation based and says so, with a source for each definitive capability claim. There are no ratings, scores or satisfaction figures anywhere in this directory, because any number of that kind would have to be invented.
It depends almost entirely on how constrained your work is. Optimisation gives the largest gains where jobs are short, dense and interchangeable. It gives much less where jobs need specific skills or certifications, depend on parts, or run across multiple days. Take your hardest real scheduling cases to a demo rather than accepting the vendor scenario.
Sometimes, and it is underrated. If your customer, asset and billing data already lives in a CRM or ERP you are not replacing, a scheduling and dispatch product that integrates with it avoids duplicating the system of record. The trade is that you own the integration, and you should assess it as part of the purchase rather than afterwards.
Because they sell differently. Trades software is bought self-serve by owner-operators who will not sit through a sales cycle, so a public price is a competitive necessity. Enterprise FSM is quoted after scoping because the price depends on user counts, modules and integration work. Both patterns are recorded here as they are, with figures only where the vendor publishes them.
No, and the claims are unreliable. Offline support is one of the most overstated capabilities in this category. Several vendors were found stating different things in different places on their own sites during research for this directory. Where that happened the capability is recorded as not verified and the contradiction is described on the profile rather than resolved by picking whichever claim was more flattering.
A CMMS manages maintenance of assets you own, on sites you control. Field service management dispatches people to customers, usually under a service agreement, and carries customer, contract and billing concerns a CMMS does not. Some organisations genuinely need both. Buying one while needing the other is a common and expensive mistake.
