What it is

Current owner: PTC Inc., since January 2023. That is the question this product most needs answered, because it has changed hands repeatedly. The reported chain is: independent ServiceMax, acquired by GE Digital in 2016 for a reported 915 million, then held by a Silver Lake majority-owned entity, then acquired by PTC which completed the purchase on 4 January 2023 for a reported 1.46 billion. No ownership change after 2023 was found in any source. servicemax.com now 301-redirects to ptc.com/en/products/servicemax. PTC own press releases confirming this are behind a 403, so the ownership fact here rests on trade press plus the absence of any later sale report.

This profile is deliberately thin, and the reason is a block. ptc.com returned HTTP 403 on every path tried, in four locales, including the product page, the company facts page and a 2026 news item. support.ptc.com has reachable ServiceMax Core help pages, but only narrow customisation topics. The consequence is that almost every functional capability is recorded as unknown. Work orders, scheduling, dispatch and invoicing are described in PTC product-page copy that surfaced in search results, but because that page was never opened, those capabilities are not recorded as supported. That is the rule working as intended, and it is better than publishing a full profile built on search snippets.

What could be verified is the extension surface and the architecture. PTC publishes a ServiceMax API section documenting Apex utilities intended for public use, plus a JavaScript snippet API. The help set path is literally servicemaxcore, and the customisation documentation is Apex and Visualforce based, which confirms the product runs on the Salesforce platform. That is architecturally important for buyers: Salesforce-native admin, security and ecosystem tooling carry over, but Salesforce platform licensing and governor limits become part of your total cost and your design constraints.

  • Four owners in roughly seven years is a real roadmap-continuity question to put to PTC directly, not a reason to rule the product out.
  • Asset 360 is not confirmed as a current product name. It appeared only in an older executive interview, so it is not used here.
  • No pricing is obtainable either. PTC pricing pages are inaccessible, so this profile records no figure. Review aggregators do publish figures for ServiceMax, and they are excluded deliberately: a product that has changed hands four times is exactly the case where aggregator pricing is most likely to describe a commercial arrangement that no longer exists.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

CapabilityStatusNotes
Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. Yes PTC publishes a ServiceMax API section of Apex utilities intended for public use, plus a JavaScript snippet API. This is the only functional capability that could be verified. source
Workforce and crew management Timesheets, crews, certifications and workforce administration. Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403.
SLA management Measuring response and resolution against service levels. Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403.
GPS and vehicle tracking Vehicle or technician location tracking. Not verified
Invoicing and payments Invoicing from completed work and taking payment. Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403.
Quoting and estimating Producing quotes and estimates for customer work. Not verified
Parts and inventory Parts consumption, van stock and inventory tracking. Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403.
Work order management Work order lifecycle from request to completion. Not verified Described in PTC product-page copy surfaced in search results, but ptc.com returned 403 and the page was never opened, so this is not recorded as supported.
Service contracts and agreements Recurring service agreements, entitlements and renewals. Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403.
Customer portal A portal for customers to log and track jobs. Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403.
Offline working Creating and completing work with no connectivity, and syncing on reconnection. Not verified No PTC page describing offline behaviour could be opened. Given that offline is the capability vendors most often overstate, this is left firmly unknown.

NoteBLOCKED. No PTC-published figure could be read; ptc.com returned 403 on every path tried. Effectively contact PTC. Review aggregators publish figures for this product and they were deliberately excluded: the brief specifically warns that aggregators were found publishing invented prices for a product divested years earlier, and a product with this ownership history is exactly where that risk lives. Note also that running on the Salesforce platform means Salesforce platform licensing is part of the total cost.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • PTC publishes a public extension and API surface for ServiceMax Core, covering Apex utilities and a JavaScript snippet API. verified source
  • Backed by a large public software vendor since January 2023, when PTC completed the acquisition from a Silver Lake majority-owned entity. verified source
  • The Salesforce platform foundation means Salesforce-native administration, security model and ecosystem tooling carry over for existing Salesforce customers. editorial

Limitations

  • Four owners in roughly seven years, independent then GE Digital in 2016 then a Silver Lake vehicle then PTC in 2023, which is a genuine roadmap-continuity question. verified source
  • Running on the Salesforce platform means Salesforce licensing and platform limits are part of the total cost and the architecture, not a detail. editorial
  • Vendor product pages and most documentation are closed to automated and public access, which made independent capability verification impossible for this profile. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Enterprise

Good fit: enterprise, asset-heavy service organisations, which is how PTC positions it: manufacturers, medical device companies and industrial equipment makers servicing a serialised installed base. Organisations already running Salesforce have a genuine advantage, since the product is built on that platform and the admin, security and extension model is familiar. Organisations already running PTC for PLM or IoT have a second reason to look, since the acquisition rationale was joining service data to product data.

Poor fit: small and mid-size contractors, by positioning. Also a poor fit for anyone who wants to shortlist from published evidence, because PTC web properties are closed to automated and public reading, and no pricing, no feature documentation beyond customisation topics and no offline specification could be obtained. Buyers who are not already Salesforce customers should price the underlying Salesforce platform licences before comparing against products that do not carry that dependency.

Typical use cases: OEM and manufacturer installed-base service, medical device field engineering with compliance record-keeping, and industrial equipment service where asset history matters more than route density. Treat every functional requirement as something to demo rather than something this profile can confirm, and ask PTC directly about roadmap continuity given the ownership history.

Alternatives

IFS Cloud Field Service Management IFS The closest comparable: asset-centric enterprise field service for installed-base service under warranty and contract. IFS runs on one data model shared with its EAM rather than on the Salesforce platform, so it carries no third-party platform licensing. Both records here are thin because both vendor sites block automated access.
Field Service and Operations Salesforce If you are buying ServiceMax largely because you already run Salesforce, compare the first-party product directly. It publishes full list pricing in six labelled currencies, where no PTC figure is obtainable at all, though it is customer-centric rather than asset-centric.
SAP Field Service Management SAP An enterprise alternative for manufacturers and equipment service organisations with far more readable public evidence, including a documented dispatching board, crowd service and QR-code customer self-service. Suits an SAP landscape rather than a Salesforce one.
NextGen FSM OverIT For industrial and utility asset service where GIS, linear assets and regulatory compliance deadlines matter. Capabilities are documented on readable vendor pages, unlike ServiceMax, though OverIT publishes no pricing, no API documentation and no deployment model.
ServiceNow Field Service Management ServiceNow Choose this where you must shortlist from published evidence. Its documentation site is open and specifies offline behaviour and the assignment engine in detail, against a ServiceMax record where only the API surface could be verified.

Frequently asked questions

PTC Inc. PTC completed its acquisition of ServiceMax from an entity majority owned by Silver Lake on 4 January 2023, for a reported 1.46 billion. Before that, GE Digital acquired ServiceMax in 2016 for a reported 915 million. No ownership change after 2023 was found. servicemax.com now redirects to the PTC product page.

The Salesforce platform. PTC own customisation documentation is Apex and Visualforce based, and the help set path is servicemaxcore. For buyers this means Salesforce platform licensing and governor limits are part of your cost and design constraints.

Because ptc.com returned HTTP 403 to automated access on every path tried, including the product page, and no workaround was attempted. The reachable PTC support pages cover only narrow customisation topics. Work orders, scheduling, dispatch and invoicing appear in PTC marketing copy visible in search results, but since that page was never opened they are not recorded as verified capabilities.
