ServiceMax vs IFS Cloud Field Service Management

Both of these are enterprise, asset-centric field service products sold to organisations servicing a serialised installed base. Neither is a trades product and neither publishes a price. This is also the thinnest comparison in the category, and the thinness is on both sides, caused by vendor sites refusing automated access. A record this short does not mean a product this limited, and readers should treat it as a prompt to demo rather than as a verdict.

On the ServiceMax side, ptc.com returned HTTP 403 on every path tried across four locales, including the product page, the company facts page and a 2026 news item. support.ptc.com has reachable ServiceMax Core help pages, but only narrow customisation topics. The consequence is that almost every functional capability is recorded as unverified: work orders, dispatch, scheduling, route optimisation, mobile app, offline mode, customer portal, service contracts, inventory, invoicing, SLA management and workforce management. Work orders, scheduling, dispatch and invoicing appear in PTC product-page copy that surfaced in search results, but because that page was never opened, they are not recorded as supported. The one functional capability that could be verified is the extension surface.

On the IFS side, www.ifs.com returned HTTP 429 on every attempt across three URLs and two passes. Every IFS capability here rests on one IFS-owned blog page. So neither record is documentation-grade, and the honest answer to most feature questions on this page is that you will have to ask the vendor.

The main differences

What is actually verifiable about ServiceMax

Two things, and they are both about architecture and ownership rather than features.

Ownership first, because this product has changed hands repeatedly. PTC Inc. owns ServiceMax and completed the acquisition on 4 January 2023 from an entity majority owned by Silver Lake, for a reported 1.46 billion. Before that GE Digital acquired ServiceMax in 2016 for a reported 915 million. No ownership change after 2023 was found in any source. servicemax.com now 301-redirects to the PTC product page. Four owners in roughly seven years is a genuine roadmap-continuity question to put to PTC directly, not a reason to rule the product out. Note that the PTC press releases that would confirm this are themselves behind a 403, so the ownership fact rests on trade press plus the absence of any later sale report.

Architecture second. PTC publishes a ServiceMax API section documenting Apex utilities intended for public use, plus a JavaScript snippet API. The help set path is literally servicemaxcore and the customisation documentation is Apex and Visualforce based, which confirms the product runs on the Salesforce platform. For buyers that cuts both ways: Salesforce-native administration, security model and ecosystem tooling carry over, but Salesforce platform licensing and governor limits become part of your total cost and your design constraints. If you are not already a Salesforce customer, price those licences before comparing against products with no such dependency. Asset 360 is not confirmed as a current product name and is not used here.

What is verifiable about IFS Cloud Field Service Management

More than for ServiceMax, though still from one marketing-grade source. IFS states a unified data model spanning workforce, assets, service events, contracts and parts, with native integration across field service, ERP and enterprise asset management inside IFS Cloud, supported by REST APIs. It claims warranty and entitlement linkages, embedded contract analytics and advanced serialised asset tracking. Scheduling is covered through IFS.ai, which supplies intelligent scheduling, AI service resource forecasting and scheduling optimisation. IFS.ai is the AI layer inside the field service product, not a replacement for it.

IFS mobile is described as offline-first, with cached job packs, schematics, procedures and parts data, guided conditional multimedia forms, signature and photo capture, automatic background sync and conflict handling. No contradiction was found, so it is recorded as supported, with the evidence-quality caveat that this is the only offline claim in the category sourced solely to a vendor blog. ServiceMax offline could not be assessed at all: no PTC page describing offline behaviour could be opened, and because offline is the capability vendors most often overstate, it is left firmly unverified rather than inferred.

How the fit differs

IFS field service is natively fused with enterprise asset management on one data model. ServiceMax is asset-centric field service built on a CRM platform, with the PTC acquisition rationale being to join service data to product data, so organisations already running PTC for PLM or IoT have a second reason to look. If the distinction between asset management and service management is the actual question you are trying to answer, CAFM vs CMMS vs EAM vs IWMS frames it better than any feature table.

Documented API Yes PTC publishes a ServiceMax API section of Apex utilities intended for public use, plus a JavaScript snippet API. This is the only functional capability that could be verified. source Yes Claim level only. IFS states native integration across FSM, ERP and EAM supported by REST APIs. No API reference could be opened, so this is a vendor claim rather than a verified documentation set. source
Workforce and crew management Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Yes Partial and weakly sourced. AI service resource forecasting and scheduling optimisation, with the unified data model spanning workforce. source
SLA management Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Not verified Entitlements and contract analytics are mentioned; SLA management as such is not.
GPS and vehicle tracking Not verified Not verified Not stated on the one readable IFS page.
Invoicing and payments Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Not verified Not stated on the one readable IFS page.

Parts and inventory Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Yes Parts in the unified data model, cached offline, plus advanced serialised asset tracking. source
Work order management Not verified Described in PTC product-page copy surfaced in search results, but ptc.com returned 403 and the page was never opened, so this is not recorded as supported. Not verified Service events and job packs are referenced, but work orders are not described as a feature on the one IFS page that could be read. Consequence of the ifs.com block.
Service contracts and agreements Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Yes Warranty and entitlement linkages plus embedded contract analytics in the unified data model. source
Customer portal Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Not verified Not stated on the one readable IFS page.
Offline working Not verified No PTC page describing offline behaviour could be opened. Given that offline is the capability vendors most often overstate, this is left firmly unknown. Yes EVIDENCE QUALITY CAVEAT. Described as an offline-first app with cached job packs, schematics, procedures and parts data, guided conditional multimedia forms, signature and photo capture, automatic background sync and conflict handling. This is the only offline claim in this category sourced solely to a vendor marketing blog, because ifs.com returned 429 and no documentation was reachable. No contradiction was found, so it stays yes, but it is weaker evidence than the ServiceNow or Oracle documentation. source
Technician mobile app Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Yes Technicians complete guided forms and capture signatures and photos. source
Route optimisation Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403. Not verified Not stated on the one readable IFS page.
Scheduling and optimisation Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403 on every path. Yes IFS.ai provides intelligent scheduling plus AI service resource forecasting and scheduling optimisation. Vendor blog source, not product documentation. source
Dispatch and assignment Not verified Not verifiable; ptc.com returned 403 on every path. Not verified Scheduling is described; dispatch as a distinct capability is not. Consequence of the block.

Which to choose

If one data model across assets, service and ERP is your buying reason, IFS is the structurally better answer, and organisations already on IFS Cloud have the advantage. If your advantage lies in an existing Salesforce estate, or in PTC product data from PLM and IoT, ServiceMax is the more natural pairing. Both are enterprise purchases that will be sales-led regardless, since no pricing, deployment detail or offline specification is publicly obtainable for either.

Publish-worthy caution: this is the comparison on this site where the published record supports the fewest conclusions. Treat every functional requirement as something to demo. Ask PTC about roadmap continuity given four owners in seven years, and ask IFS which generation of the product a given reference or quote describes, since IFS FSM, IFS Cloud Field Service Management and IFS.ai all circulate for the same lineage.

Frequently asked questions

PTC Inc. It completed the acquisition on 4 January 2023 from an entity majority owned by Silver Lake, for a reported 1.46 billion, after GE Digital acquired ServiceMax in 2016 for a reported 915 million. No later ownership change was found. servicemax.com redirects to the PTC product page.

Because ptc.com returned HTTP 403 to automated access on every path tried, including the product page, and no workaround was attempted. The only reachable PTC pages cover narrow customisation topics. Work orders, scheduling, dispatch and invoicing appear in PTC marketing copy visible in search results, but since that page was never opened they are not recorded as verified. This is a limit of the published record, not a statement about the product.

IFS, but only relatively. IFS describes an offline-first app with cached job packs and background sync, sourced to a vendor marketing blog. For ServiceMax, no PTC page describing offline behaviour could be opened at all, so offline is left unverified. Neither is comparable to the documented offline specifications published by ServiceNow or Oracle.

It runs on the Salesforce platform: PTC customisation documentation is Apex and Visualforce based and the help set path is servicemaxcore. That means Salesforce platform licensing and governor limits are part of your total cost and your design constraints. Price those before comparing against products without the dependency, and confirm the exact licensing with PTC.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
