ServiceNow Field Service Management
by ServiceNow
Field service application on the ServiceNow platform, driven by a rules-based Dynamic Scheduling engine with weighted multi-criteria assignment and the best-documented offline mobile mode in this category. No vendor pricing is obtainable.
What it is
ServiceNow Field Service Management puts field work on the same platform as ITSM and CSM. The documented flow is clean: a customer submits a request with a preferred time through a self-service portal, a work order with one or more tasks is generated, tasks are auto-assigned by location, skills, parts and availability, and completion records tasks, parts, expenses and time with a PDF summary attached for audit. The customer gets a text with a link to a map showing the agent current location and an estimated arrival time.
The assignment engine is the standout and it is unusually transparent. Dynamic Scheduling scores candidate agents with configurable weights, default 10 per criterion, across matching skills, matching mandatory skills, skill level gap, matching mandatory parts, agents with the most parts, timezone overlap and several distance variants. You get one configuration per task table, preferred and excluded technicians, and toggles for Auto Assignment and Immediate Assignment; with both off, a dispatcher triggers assignment manually. SLA is a first-class scheduling input rather than a report: an unassignment constraint keeps a task assigned if unassigning would breach SLA in the next five hours, and ordering rules can sort tasks by SLA due date.
Offline is the best-documented of any product in this category, and the honesty is what makes it credible. Offline you can work field service tasks, record time, track asset usage, create part requirements, accept and reject tasks, record travel and work start times, pause and complete tasks, view My Inventory, log incidental expenses, view attached knowledge articles and complete questionnaires. ServiceNow then states the limits: you must pre-download field service data to the app cache and enable offline mode first, you need the wm_agent or wm_dispatcher role, changes queue in an outbox and must sync, refreshing the cache requires going online then offline again, My Schedule is unavailable offline because the underlying remote table is not supported, and SLAs closed offline record the device timestamp and need an administrator to repair the SLA afterwards. That is what a real offline specification looks like.
- Route optimisation needs scoping carefully. Agents can find optimal routes for multiple locations on the mobile task map. Dispatcher-side routing, however, is estimate-based: distance and travel criteria using the Google Maps API or straight-line estimates, falling back to a static Estimated Travel Duration field. There is no documented full route-optimisation engine on the office side.
- No pricing is obtainable. ServiceNow own pricing page returned 403 to automated access, as did its marketing pages. Review aggregators carry conflicting figures which this profile deliberately excludes.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.
| Capability | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Workforce and crew management Timesheets, crews, certifications and workforce administration. | Yes | Partial. Agent schedules, working hours, contractor availability and crew handling via the Field Service Crew Operations plugin. source |
| SLA management Measuring response and resolution against service levels. | Yes | SLA is a scheduling input: an unassignment constraint prevents unassigning a task that would breach SLA within five hours, and ordering rules can sort by SLA due date. source |
| GPS and vehicle tracking Vehicle or technician location tracking. | Yes | Customers receive a text with a link to a map showing the agent current location and ETA. source |
| Parts and inventory Parts consumption, van stock and inventory tracking. | Yes | Locate parts on an asset map, request and transfer parts from other agents or warehouses, record assets used, create part requirements. source |
| Work order management Work order lifecycle from request to completion. | Yes | Booking generates a work order listing all tasks; completion records tasks, parts, expenses and time with a PDF summary attached for audit. source |
| Customer portal A portal for customers to log and track jobs. | Yes | Self-service portal lets customers submit service requests with a preferred appointment time. source |
| Offline working Creating and completing work with no connectivity, and syncing on reconnection. | Yes | Best documented in the category, with explicit limits. Offline: work tasks, record time, track asset usage, create part requirements, accept and reject, record travel, pause and complete tasks, view My Inventory, log expenses, view knowledge articles, complete questionnaires. Limits: requires pre-downloaded cache and offline mode enabled, the wm_agent or wm_dispatcher role, outbox sync, an online-then-offline round trip to refresh cache; My Schedule is unavailable offline; SLAs closed offline record the device timestamp and need admin SLA repair. source |
| Technician mobile app A dedicated mobile application for field technicians. | Yes | Accept and reject tasks, plan the day, close work order tasks, run safety and completion questionnaires, capture customer signature. source |
| Route optimisation Optimising travel between jobs across a working day. | Yes | Partial and worth scoping. Agents can find optimal routes for multiple locations on the mobile task map. Dispatcher-side routing is estimate-based via Google Maps API or straight-line distance, falling back to a static Estimated Travel Duration field; no full office-side optimisation engine is documented. source |
| Scheduling and optimisation Scheduling work against availability, skills and capacity. | Yes | Dynamic Scheduling scores candidates with configurable weights across skills, mandatory skills, skill level gap, parts, distance variants and timezone overlap. source |
| Dispatch and assignment Assigning jobs to technicians and managing the dispatch board. | Yes | Auto-assignment by location, skills and availability; agents accept or reject with reassignment; Auto and Immediate Assignment toggles, or manual dispatcher trigger. source |
| Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. | Not verified | ServiceNow is well known for platform REST and Table APIs, but developer.servicenow.com returned an unsupported-browser gate, so no API documentation page was opened. Recorded unknown rather than assumed. |
| Invoicing and payments Invoicing from completed work and taking payment. | Not verified | Work orders record parts, expenses and time, but no invoicing feature was documented. |
| Quoting and estimating Producing quotes and estimates for customer work. | Not verified | Not documented on pages opened. |
| Service contracts and agreements Recurring service agreements, entitlements and renewals. | Not verified | Not documented on any ServiceNow page opened. A third-party analyst summary mentions contract and warranty management, which was deliberately not used to promote a capability. |

| Note | BLOCKED. ServiceNow own pricing page exists at servicenow.com/products/field-service-management/pricing.html but returned HTTP 403 to automated access, as did the product marketing pages. No vendor figure could therefore be read. Review aggregators publish conflicting figures for this product, including a flat annual figure and a per-user monthly figure from a blog that mixed in an unrelated product; all were deliberately excluded. Expect quote-based enterprise licensing. Field Service Crew Operations is documented as a separate plugin, implying modular licensing on top. |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- The most precisely documented offline mode in this category, including named unsupported tables and a documented SLA repair procedure for offline closures. verified source
- Deep and transparent auto-assignment: weighted multi-criteria scoring across skills, mandatory skills, skill level gap, parts in van, distance variants and timezone overlap. verified source
- SLA is a first-class scheduling input, with a breach-risk constraint on unassignment and SLA-based task ordering, not just SLA reporting after the fact. verified source
Limitations
- Offline requires manual cache priming and an online-then-offline round trip to refresh data, and My Schedule is unavailable offline because its remote table is unsupported. verified source
- SLAs closed offline record the device timestamp rather than the actual time and require an administrator to repair the SLA on the desktop instance after sync. verified source
- Dispatcher-side routing is travel estimation rather than a documented route optimisation engine, and task ordering rules are off by default for performance reasons. verified source
- No commercial information whatsoever is publicly readable, because the vendor pricing and marketing pages refuse automated access. Budgeting requires sales contact. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Enterprise
Good fit: enterprises already standardised on ServiceNow for ITSM or CSM who want field work on the same platform, the same CMDB and the same workflow engine rather than integrating a separate FSM product. It is the strongest choice in this category where SLA compliance is contractual and must drive assignment decisions, not just appear in a report afterwards. It is also the right answer when crews genuinely lose connectivity for long stretches and you need a written specification of what works offline before you commit, because ServiceNow publishes exactly that, limitations included.
Poor fit: any small or mid-size contractor. This is platform software with release families, plugins such as Field Service Crew Operations implying modular licensing, and quote-based enterprise pricing that could not even be read. It is also a poor fit if you need quoting, invoicing or customer service-contract management inside the field service product, because none of those could be verified on any ServiceNow page opened during research. And if dispatcher-side route optimisation is a hard requirement, test it: the documented behaviour is travel estimation, not optimisation.
Typical use cases: enterprise IT and facilities field support dispatched from the same platform as the service desk, telecoms and utility field operations with contractual SLA exposure, and crew-based work where the Field Service Crew Operations plugin applies. Budget for sales contact: nothing commercial about this product is publicly readable.

Frequently asked questions
Strong and specifically documented. Tasks, time, assets, part requirements, inventory view, expenses, knowledge articles, questionnaires and work order closure all work offline. It is cache-based, though: you must download data and enable offline mode first, My Schedule is unavailable offline, and SLAs closed offline carry the device timestamp and need administrator repair after sync.
Unknown. ServiceNow own pricing page returned HTTP 403 to automated access, so no vendor figure could be read. Expect quote-based enterprise licensing, with the Field Service Crew Operations plugin suggesting modular licensing on top. Ignore the figures on review aggregators: they conflict with each other for this product.
Through Dynamic Scheduling, a weighted-score engine over matching skills, mandatory skills, skill level fit, parts in the van, distance and travel estimates, timezone overlap and SLA breach risk. It can run immediately on task creation, in batches, or only when a dispatcher triggers it.
