Dynamics 365 Field Service vs Field Service and Operations (Salesforce)

This is an enterprise comparison, and the first thing to say is that neither product belongs on a small contractor shortlist. Microsoft publishes 105.00 per user per month paid yearly for Dynamics 365 Field Service, plus a 50.00 per user per month Field Service Contractor licence. Salesforce publishes 175 per user per month billed annually for Dispatcher and the same again for Technician, so a working pair is 350 at list before add-ons. Those are list figures from vendor pricing pages, and the currency treatment differs in a way buyers should not smooth over: the Microsoft page prints a bare dollar sign with no ISO code, so USD is inferred from the US locale rather than stated, while Salesforce labels six currencies explicitly as USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY and SEK. Salesforce has the most transparent enterprise pricing in this category.

The second thing to say is that the Salesforce product has been renamed. What the market still calls Salesforce Field Service is marketed as Field Service and Operations, after Field Service Lightning, Salesforce Field Service and a spell as Agentforce Field Service and Operations announced in October 2025. Salesforce has not caught up with itself: its own Help article still carries the Agentforce-prefixed title. Expect both names in RFPs and partner collateral.

Beyond price, the choice is usually settled by which platform you already own. Dynamics 365 Field Service runs on Dataverse and Power Platform; its mobile app is a model-driven Power Apps app, so customisation happens at that layer. Field Service and Operations runs on the Salesforce platform and shortens the path from a customer record and a case to dispatched field work. If you are weighing field service against a maintenance system rather than against another field product, field service versus CMMS is the prior question.

The main differences

Where each one wins

Dynamics 365 Field Service has the deeper ERP story. Microsoft publishes the actual table mappings for its first-party Business Central integration: project lines to work order products and services, Business Central service orders to Field Service work orders, service items to customer assets, and Business Central locations to Field Service warehouses, with invoicing on the Business Central side. Published table-level mappings are rare in this market. The catch is licensing: the deeper Project and Service integration mode requires Business Central Premium, because service management is not available on Essentials. Microsoft also documents four distinct service delivery models out of the box, reactive break-fix, preventive work from agreements, predictive work from IoT through Connected Field Service, and project-based work via Project Operations, which is unusual breadth. Resource Scheduling Optimization, however, is documented as an add-on rather than an included feature, so genuinely automated scheduling may cost more than the headline figure.

Field Service and Operations wins on workforce breadth and commercial clarity. Frontline Workforce Management is a named SKU at 30 per user per month covering shift workers, and no other product in this category sells rostering as a discrete priced line. In-field quoting and payment collection are stated capabilities, closing the loop from dispatch to cash. Set against that, inventory is an add-on: Inventory Allocation and Inventory Search and Transfer are listed as available for purchase rather than included. Agentic scheduling is metered, with the Scheduling Agent consuming Flex Credits, so AI scheduling is a consumption cost rather than a flat feature.

Offline working: both records are compromised, for different reasons

Microsoft contradicts itself, and this directory does not resolve it. The live mobile overview frames offline as something an administrator configures and states plainly that the refreshed mobile experience does not currently support working offline. Other Microsoft-owned surfaces, including the docs source mirror and a Learn training module, describe offline as on by default. Microsoft also maintains a dedicated offline profile best practices and limitations page plus troubleshooting pages for missing offline data. We could not reconcile those claims, so offline is recorded as unverified rather than present or absent. Verify against your specific target release before committing.

Salesforce describes the app as offline-first with thousands of records available without a connection, and the pricing page Technician line states work orders can be viewed and updated offline. No contradiction was found, but this is marketing-grade evidence only: help.salesforce.com renders as a JavaScript shell to automated access and the Field Service developer guide returned 403, so no documented offline limitations could be read. A claim with no readable limits is not the same as a specification.

Documented API Not verified No Field Service developer or API page loaded; the constructed developer-guide URL 404ed. The Dataverse Web API is implied by the architecture but was not verified. Yes Weak source. The product-page FAQ references APIs for custom integrations. The authoritative Field Service developer guide returned 403, so this is marketing-level evidence. source
Workforce and crew management Yes Partial. Time tracking and bookable resource management, not shift rostering. source Yes Frontline Workforce Management is a named SKU at 30 per user per month for shift work. source
SLA management Not verified Not stated on any Field Service page opened. Possibly inherited from Customer Service, unverified. Not verified The page mentions compliance with service level agreements but documents no SLA or entitlement management feature.
GPS and vehicle tracking Yes Technician location tracking plus geofencing on work locations. source Not verified Real-time visibility and asset tracking are stated; GPS technician tracking is not.
Invoicing and payments Yes Closing a work order generates an invoice for parts and labour used. source Not verified In-field payment collection is stated; invoicing is not.
Quoting and estimating Not verified No Microsoft page opened documents quoting inside Field Service. Yes Create quotes and collect payment in the field. source
Parts and inventory Yes Truck stock, purchase orders and returns; inventory decrements on part install. source Yes Inventory Allocation and Inventory Search and Transfer are flagged available for purchase, so this is an add-on rather than an included capability. source
Work order management Yes Work orders originate from cases, sales orders, email, agreements, web portals or IoT. source Yes Create, assign, execute and debrief work orders. source
Service contracts and agreements Yes Agreements auto-generate recurring preventive maintenance work orders. source Yes Service Contract Management appears in the feature matrix; per-edition inclusion is unclear. source
Customer portal Yes Portal built on Power Apps lets customers view appointments in real time. source Not verified Appointment Assistant provides customer self-service booking and rescheduling, but Salesforce does not describe it as a portal. Not stretched into a yes.
Offline working Not verified CONTRADICTION. Microsoft documents admin-configured offline capabilities, but the same live mobile overview states the refreshed mobile experience does not currently support working offline, while the docs source mirror and a Learn training module describe offline as on by default. Recorded unknown rather than picking a side. Yes Vendor marketing calls the app offline-first with thousands of records available without internet, and the pricing page Technician line states work orders can be viewed and updated offline. No contradiction found, but this is marketing-grade evidence only: help.salesforce.com renders as a JS shell and the developer guide returned 403, so no documented offline limitations could be read. source
Technician mobile app Yes iOS, Android and Windows 10 and later; included in the licence at no extra charge. source Yes Android and iOS. source
Route optimisation Yes Bundled into scheduling optimisation; map shows routes and live traffic. source Yes Included in the Dispatcher licence as AI-powered scheduling and route optimisation. source
Scheduling and optimisation Yes Resource Scheduling Optimization is documented as an add-on, not included. source Yes AI-powered scheduling and optimisation. The Scheduling Agent consumes Flex Credits. source
Dispatch and assignment Yes Interactive schedule board with drag-and-drop, scheduling assistant, or automated assignment. source Yes Unified dispatch workspace in the console; a dedicated Dispatcher licence exists. source

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Which to choose

Pick on platform first. If Business Central is your ERP and you want completed work orders flowing into it for invoicing without custom middleware, Dynamics 365 Field Service is the cheaper and better-integrated answer, provided you budget Business Central Premium and the Resource Scheduling Optimization add-on. If Service Cloud is already your system of record, or the same workforce is both rostered and dispatched, Field Service and Operations is the stronger fit and the easier product to budget, because its currencies are labelled rather than inferred.

Neither should be bought for crews that work with no signal for hours at a time without testing offline behaviour hands-on in your target release. Microsoft contradicts itself on the subject and Salesforce documented limits are unreadable, which leaves a demo as the only honest evidence. Quoting, SLA management and a documented Field Service API were all unverifiable for the Microsoft product, and invoicing, GPS tracking, SLA management and a customer portal were unverifiable for Salesforce. Treat those as open questions rather than absences.

Frequently asked questions

Dynamics 365 Field Service, on the published figures. Microsoft lists 105.00 per user per month paid yearly, with a Field Service Contractor licence at 50.00. Salesforce lists Dispatcher at 175 and Technician at 175 per user per month billed annually, so a working pair is 350. Note the currency difference: the Microsoft figure is printed as a bare dollar sign and USD is inferred from the US locale, while Salesforce labels USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY and SEK explicitly. Add-ons move both numbers, since Microsoft sells Resource Scheduling Optimization separately and Salesforce sells inventory separately and meters AI scheduling with Flex Credits.

Neither answer is settled. Microsoft states on its live mobile overview that the refreshed mobile experience does not currently support working offline, while its docs source mirror and a Learn training module describe offline as on by default. This directory reports both claims rather than picking one. Salesforce calls its app offline-first, with no contradicting statement found, but its help and developer documentation refuse automated access, so no documented limits could be read. Test offline in a demo on your target release.

Salesforce markets it as Field Service and Operations. The lineage runs Field Service Lightning, Salesforce Field Service, Agentforce Field Service and Operations from October 2025, then the current name. The Salesforce Help article still shows the Agentforce-prefixed title, so both names remain in circulation.

Salesforce, clearly. Frontline Workforce Management is a named SKU at 30 per user per month for planning, scheduling and managing shift workers. Microsoft workforce coverage in Field Service is partial: time tracking and bookable resource management rather than shift rostering.
