BigChange vs ServiceTrade
Both of these are commercial contractor products rather than sole-trader software, and they split cleanly by geography and by specialism. BigChange is UK and Europe centric and vehicle-tracking-led. ServiceTrade is the most up-market of the contractor-focused products in this category and is explicit about selling to commercial fire protection and mechanical contractors. Neither publishes a price.
BigChange was founded in 2013, is headquartered in Leeds, and its homepage is explicitly UK-aimed with UK-based round-the-clock support and UK English spelling across its feature pages. Its footer lists the UK, France, United States, Cyprus, New Zealand, Australia and Canada without explaining whether those are offices or markets. On ownership, BigChange own about page states it is part of the global Simpro Group, which it says also includes AroFlo, ClockShark and Simpro, independently corroborated by the AroFlo about page listing the same four brands. The acquisition year is unconfirmed: the announcement BigChange links to sits on simprogroup.com, which returned HTTP 403 to automated access including the exact press release, so no date is asserted here. Note that Simpro itself is separately profiled in this category.
ServiceTrade named segments are mechanical service, fire protection and life safety, commercial HVAC, electrical, refrigeration and kitchen exhaust cleaning. Its product family is the ServiceTrade platform plus SalesManager for service agreement proposals and PartsManager for parts purchasing and inventory across trucks and warehouses, with the latter two likely licensed separately. ServiceTrade also states that Mura is now part of ServiceTrade, with no date given.

Full profileThe main differences
Offline: documented on one side, absent from the story on the other
BigChange offline is unambiguous and scoped. The vendor states plainly that the field service app works offline, with the stated offline scope being view schedule, access job details, complete forms, capture photos and collect signatures, and automatic sync once the device reconnects to WiFi or mobile data. That is the best-evidenced offline working in this tier.
ServiceTrade offline is recorded as unverified, and it is a genuine gap. Neither the features index nor the mobile app page mentions offline working or signal loss anywhere. That is silence rather than a documented absence, so it is not recorded as a no, but among these products it is the clearest case of offline simply not being part of the vendor story at all. For multi-site commercial inspection work in plant rooms and risers, that should be tested hard in a demo before committing.
Route optimisation: another one-sided result
BigChange has the best-evidenced route optimisation in its tier, described mechanically rather than as a label: it calculates the most efficient order for jobs based on location, traffic, engineer skills and vehicle equipment, and route optimisation runs automatically whenever you schedule or reschedule jobs. ServiceTrade route optimisation is not stated anywhere on the pages opened, which is worth noting for a product sold into multi-site commercial inspection work where route density matters. It is unverified rather than absent.
Where ServiceTrade is clearly stronger: ERP integration and the API
ServiceTrade has the deepest commercial accounting and ERP integration list in the contractor group: QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Microsoft Dynamics 365, plus Acumatica, Viewpoint Vista, Trimble Spectrum, Deltek ComputerEase, Foundation Software and several Sage editions, alongside compliance-specific tools like Building Reports and The Compliance Engine that matter specifically in fire protection. It also has a genuinely documented core REST API with a public reference, described as the complete reference for the ServiceTrade core REST API, plus a separate SalesManager API documentation set. Among contractor products that is rare and properly public rather than claimed. One caveat: building apps for ServiceTrade customers requires Partner App review, developer terms and an approved Partner App Key, and developer.servicetrade.com redirects to a Google account sign-in, so that developer site is not publicly readable.
BigChange names only two accounting integrations, Xero and Sage, with no QuickBooks, and the Sage reference does not say which Sage product. It does have a genuine developer portal with a REST API reference plus event-driven webhooks, which is a stronger integration surface than most products in its tier even if the connector list is short.
Portals, parts and gaps
Both customer portals are better than average. ServiceTrade portal is branded, delivered as a WordPress plugin ServiceTrade builds and maintains, and covers work history, assets, upcoming visits, quote approval, invoices and online payments. The BigChange portal lets customers book work, follow progress and retrieve job cards, and is supported by a customer tracking link showing their engineer current location and estimated arrival time.
Parts is where both need care. On ServiceTrade, parts and inventory sit in PartsManager and service agreement proposals in SalesManager, so both are likely separate licence lines rather than included in the platform tiers; price the suite, not just the platform. On BigChange, inventory and stock control are not named features on the features or integrations pages at all, which is a notable gap for a parts-carrying trade, recorded as unverified rather than as a confirmed absence. Service contracts and SLA management are both unverified on BigChange, so contract-driven maintenance businesses should probe those specifically. ServiceTrade covers service agreements through SalesManager.
Pricing on both is quote-only. ServiceTrade states pricing is driven mainly by the number of technicians you support, with three suite tiers, Select, Premium and Enterprise, each with a Request pricing button and no figures, shown twice with different contents for commercial and mechanical service versus fire protection; Select includes unlimited office users, which is a meaningful detail for a large administrative team. BigChange publishes no price and no currency at all: the pricing page offers only a Request pricing button with no per-user or per-device wording, so the licensing model itself is unverified. The only pound sign on the page is a marketing return-on-investment claim, which is not a price. AI dash cams, fleet and fuel cards are separate paid extras.

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose BigChange if you are a UK or European mobile-workforce contractor for whom the vehicle is central to the operation, if you want integrated vehicle tracking as a first-class capability rather than a telematics partnership, or if genuine offline working and automatic route optimisation are hard requirements. Xero and Sage users are well served; QuickBooks users are not, since QuickBooks is not named at all. US and Gulf buyers should be cautious despite the multi-country footer, because support and positioning are UK-centric.
Choose ServiceTrade if you are a mid-market or larger commercial contractor, especially in fire protection and life safety where inspection compliance reporting is the core workflow and the Building Reports and Compliance Engine integrations matter directly, or if you run a real construction or commercial ERP. The documented REST API makes it the better choice where custom integration is a requirement rather than a nice-to-have. Residential contractors and small operators are not the target on either side and should look at Jobber, Housecall Pro or FieldPulse instead. For the KPI and contractor-management layer that sits above either tool, see field service KPIs, SLAs and contractor management.
Frequently asked questions
BigChange states plainly that its field service app works offline, with a named scope of view schedule, access job details, complete forms, capture photos and collect signatures, syncing automatically on reconnection. ServiceTrade does not mention offline working or signal loss anywhere on its features index or mobile app page, so it is recorded as unverified rather than absent, and should be tested in a demo.
BigChange own about page states it is part of the global Simpro Group alongside AroFlo, ClockShark and Simpro, corroborated by the AroFlo about page. The acquisition year could not be verified, because the announcement sits on simprogroup.com and that whole domain returned HTTP 403 to automated access, including the press release itself.
ServiceTrade has the deeper list by a wide margin: QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Microsoft Dynamics 365, plus Acumatica, Viewpoint Vista, Trimble Spectrum, Deltek ComputerEase and Foundation Software. BigChange names only Xero and Sage, with no QuickBooks, and does not specify which Sage product.
No. ServiceTrade has three unpriced suite tiers with cost driven mainly by technician count, and unlimited office users on Select. BigChange publishes neither a price nor a currency nor a licensing basis: its pricing page offers only a Request pricing button. The single pound sign on that page is a marketing return-on-investment claim, not a price.
