Business Intelligence Software: Products, Features and Comparisons
Business intelligence software turns data an organisation already holds into reporting and analysis people can act on. The category spans very different things: governed enterprise platforms, self-service exploration tools, open-source projects you host yourself, and engines built to embed analytics inside someone else's product.
Those are not variations on one product. They have different buyers, different skill requirements and different failure modes, which is why a single ranking of "best BI tool" is unhelpful. The filters below let you narrow by the things that actually disqualify a product: whether it can run on your own infrastructure, how it is licensed, and what it is primarily built to do.

How to choose
Four questions settle most BI shortlists faster than a feature comparison.
Where must the data live? If it cannot leave your infrastructure, that removes the cloud-only products immediately, and it is the cheapest filter to apply first.
Do you already have a warehouse? If you do, prefer tools that query it rather than copying data into their own store. If you do not, an all-in-one platform may be a shortcut, at the cost of tighter coupling.
Who will build the reports? A tool for analytics engineers and a tool for a finance team are different purchases. Buying for an audience you do not have is the most common and most expensive error in this category.
Is the problem inconsistent numbers? If different teams report different revenue, the fix is a governed semantic layer, not better charts. That points at a narrow set of products and rules out most of the rest.
One further caution from implementation work: the licence is rarely the largest cost. Modelling effort, warehouse compute and the internal skills to run the thing usually outweigh it, and they are the items least often budgeted.
Frequently asked questions
A warehouse stores and organises data; BI software queries it and presents the result. They are complementary, not alternatives. Some products in this directory, such as Domo, include storage, which is convenient without a warehouse and duplicative with one.
Some can and many cannot, and it is the fastest way to shorten a shortlist. Power BI, Tableau, Oracle Analytics, Cognos, Sisense, Yellowfin, Zoho Analytics, Metabase, Superset and Redash all offer self-hosted or on-premises deployment. Looker, Looker Studio, QuickSight, Sigma, ThoughtSpot and Domo are cloud services. Use the deployment filter above.
There is no licence fee, which is real. The cost moves to hosting, upgrades, authentication and internal support. For organisations with platform engineering capability that is usually cheaper overall; for those without, the saving often does not materialise. Compare total cost, not the licence line.
Connecting a tool and producing a first dashboard can take days. Producing numbers the business trusts takes considerably longer, and the gap is almost always data modelling and definition work rather than the tool. Any timeline that budgets only for installation will slip.
Because they are different statements. A capability we have not checked is recorded as unverified rather than absent, since treating missing information as a "no" would misrepresent products we simply have not examined on that point. Every "yes" and "no" here carries a source and a date.
