Power BI vs Metabase: Enterprise Platform or Fast Self-Service
An unequal comparison on paper that comes up constantly in practice, because the real question is whether you need an enterprise BI platform at all.

Metabase
An open-source BI tool designed for fast self-service questions, available self-hosted or as a managed cloud service.
Full profileThe main differences
Modelling depth. Power BI has a genuine semantic layer with DAX and a governed model many reports share. Metabase has a lighter model and does not attempt enterprise semantics. If one definition of revenue must be enforced everywhere, that is Power BI's ground.
Speed to value. Metabase is usable the day it is installed, by people who have had no training. Power BI needs model design before it pays off properly.
Cost. Metabase self-hosted has no licence cost. Power BI is inexpensive to start with Microsoft licensing and becomes a capacity planning exercise at scale.
Breadth. Power BI brings paginated reporting, deep connectivity, mobile and an on-premises report server. Metabase deliberately covers less.

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose Metabase if you are a small or mid-sized team, your main problem is that developers run queries on request, and you want that fixed cheaply and quickly.
Choose Power BI if you need governed metrics across a large audience, already hold Microsoft licensing, or need paginated and formatted output.
Many organisations end up with both, and that is a legitimate outcome rather than a failure: Power BI as the governed enterprise layer, Metabase as the fast internal tool for engineers and operations.
Frequently asked questions
Sometimes, if the enterprise's real need is self-service querying rather than governed semantic modelling. Where finance, regulatory or multi-department consistency is at stake, Metabase's lighter model becomes the limiting factor. Be honest about which problem you have before deciding.
