Metabase
by Metabase
An open-source BI tool designed for fast self-service questions, available self-hosted or as a managed cloud service.
What it is
Metabase is the most approachable tool in this list. It installs quickly, points at a database, and lets non-technical users ask questions through a query builder without writing SQL. For teams whose reporting currently consists of developers running queries on request, it removes that bottleneck in an afternoon.
It is genuinely open source, so the self-hosted edition can be run at no licence cost, with paid cloud and enterprise tiers adding managed hosting, richer permissions and embedding.
It is deliberately not an enterprise modelling platform. There is no equivalent of LookML or DAX, and complex governed semantics are not what it is for.

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

Strengths and limitations
Limitations
- A light modelling layer; not built for complex governed semantics. editorial
- Advanced permissions and embedding sit in paid tiers. editorial
- Cloud plans include a fixed number of users, then charge per head: USD 6 per additional user per month on Starter beyond the first five. verified source
- Less capable visualisation than the category leaders. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Small, Medium
Small and mid-sized teams, startups, and any organisation wanting useful self-service reporting quickly and cheaply. Also a sound internal tool alongside a heavier enterprise platform.
Not a fit for complex enterprise semantic modelling or large governed deployments.

Frequently asked questions
The open-source edition is free to self-host and you can run it in production without paying. You take on hosting, upgrades and backups yourself. Paid plans cover managed hosting plus features such as advanced permissions and embedding.
It handles a lot more than its reputation suggests, but it is not a semantic-modelling platform. If you need one governed definition of revenue enforced across hundreds of reports, look at Looker or Power BI. If you need quick, safe answers from a database, Metabase is often enough.
