Apache Superset
by Apache Software Foundation
An Apache Software Foundation project for exploring and visualising data, self-hosted and free of licence cost.
What it is
Superset is an Apache project rather than a vendor product, and that shapes everything about it. There is no licence cost, no sales process and no account manager. Its SQL Lab and chart builder are capable, its connectivity to SQL engines is broad, and at scale it is genuinely inexpensive to run.
What you take on is operations. Deployment, upgrades, authentication, scaling and troubleshooting are yours, and running it well needs real platform engineering capability. Organisations that have that often prefer it; organisations that do not frequently underestimate the commitment.
Support comes from the community. There is no vendor to escalate to, which is a governance question in regulated environments.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.
| Capability | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive dashboards Dashboards users can filter and drill into rather than static images. | Yes | source |
| Data visualisation The chart library and formatting control available to authors. | Yes | source |
| Self-service analytics Business users building their own analysis without a developer. | Yes | source |
| Scheduled reporting Reports generated and distributed on a timetable. | Yes | source |
| Data connectivity Breadth of native connectors to databases and services. | Yes | source |
| Role-based access control Permissions by role, including row-level restriction. | Yes | source |
| Free self-hosted edition A no-licence-cost edition you can run on your own infrastructure. | Yes | source |
| Vendor-managed cloud A hosted service operated by the vendor, so you do not run it yourself. | No | source |
| Paginated and pixel-perfect reporting Fixed-layout output for statutory, regulatory or print reporting. | No | source |
| Planning and budgeting Forecasting and budget entry in the same product as the reporting. | No | source |
| Native dbt metric integration Reads models and metrics directly from a dbt project rather than a separate modelling layer. | No | source |
| Associative exploration engine Selections re-evaluate the whole dataset and reveal excluded, unrelated values. | No | source |
| Embedded analytics Charts and dashboards surfaced inside another application. | Not verified | |
| Data modelling A governed semantic layer defining measures and relationships. | Not verified | |
| AI-assisted analytics Natural-language query or generated insight features. | Not verified | |
| Mobile access A supported mobile app or responsive consumption experience. | Not verified | |
| Usage or session-based reader licensing Readers charged by use rather than per seat, which changes the cost of a large occasional audience. | Not verified |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- No licence cost at any scale. verified source
- Broad SQL engine connectivity and a strong SQL exploration experience. editorial
- Apache governance, so no single-vendor dependency. editorial
Limitations
- You carry all operational responsibility. editorial
- No official vendor cloud or commercial support from the project. editorial
- A thinner semantic modelling layer than commercial platforms. editorial
- Needs engineering skill that offsets the licence saving. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise
Engineering-led organisations with platform capability and a preference for open source, especially where BI licence cost at scale is the problem being solved.
Wrong where there is no team to operate it, or where a support contract is required.

Frequently asked questions
There is no licence fee. The cost moves to people: hosting, upgrades, authentication integration and support all become internal work. For organisations with platform engineers that is often cheaper overall; for those without, the saving is frequently illusory.

Disclosure
Alongside advisory work I also build a CMMS and CAFM platform, so I have a commercial interest in enterprise software generally. No vendor in this directory has paid for inclusion, placement or wording, and there are no reseller or affiliate arrangements. Weigh the analysis accordingly.
