Metabase vs Apache Superset: Two Open-Source Routes
Both are open source and free to self-host, so the licence is not the deciding factor. The real difference is who the tool is for and how much operational work you are taking on.

An Apache Software Foundation project for exploring and visualising data, self-hosted and free of licence cost.
Full profileThe main differences
Audience. Metabase is built for business users: a query builder, plain-language questions, results in minutes without SQL. Superset assumes SQL fluency and gives you a powerful SQL workbench. That single difference settles most decisions.
Operational burden. Metabase is simple to stand up and also offers a managed cloud if you would rather not run it. Superset has no official vendor cloud and needs real platform engineering to run well at scale.
Support. Metabase is a company, so a paid support relationship is available. Superset is an Apache project with community support only, which is a governance question in regulated environments.
Ceiling. Superset scales further for large, engineering-led deployments. Metabase is more capable than its reputation suggests but is not an enterprise semantic platform.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose Metabase if non-technical people need to answer their own questions, if you want it working this week, or if you would rather pay for managed hosting than operate it.
Choose Superset if your users write SQL, you have platform engineers, and licence cost at scale is the problem you are solving.
The honest summary: Metabase is open-source BI for business users; Superset is open-source BI for engineers. Pick the one that matches the people who will use it.
Frequently asked questions
Both have no licence fee self-hosted. Metabase is usually cheaper in total because it takes less engineering time to operate, and its paid cloud removes that work entirely. Superset's cost is almost all staff time, which is easy to leave out of a comparison and is frequently the larger number.
