Lightdash
by Lightdash
An open-source BI layer built directly on dbt projects, so metric definitions live in the transformation layer.
What it is
Lightdash makes a specific architectural bet: if your team already defines transformations in dbt, metric definitions belong there too, not duplicated in a BI tool. It reads your dbt project and exposes those models and metrics directly for exploration.
The payoff is no second modelling layer to keep in step. A metric changes in dbt, in version control, with a review, and the BI layer follows. For teams with a mature dbt practice this removes a familiar class of drift between the warehouse and the dashboard.
The constraint is equally specific: without dbt there is no reason to choose it. It is also a much younger product with a smaller community than anything else here.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

|---|---|---|
| Interactive dashboards Dashboards users can filter and drill into rather than static images. | Yes | source |
| Data visualisation The chart library and formatting control available to authors. | Yes | source |
| Self-service analytics Business users building their own analysis without a developer. | Yes | source |
| Data modelling A governed semantic layer defining measures and relationships. | Yes | source |
| Data connectivity Breadth of native connectors to databases and services. | Yes | source |
| Role-based access control Permissions by role, including row-level restriction. | Yes | source |
| Free self-hosted edition A no-licence-cost edition you can run on your own infrastructure. | Yes | source |
| Vendor-managed cloud A hosted service operated by the vendor, so you do not run it yourself. | Yes | source |
| Native dbt metric integration Reads models and metrics directly from a dbt project rather than a separate modelling layer. | Yes | source |
| Paginated and pixel-perfect reporting Fixed-layout output for statutory, regulatory or print reporting. | No | source |
| Planning and budgeting Forecasting and budget entry in the same product as the reporting. | No | source |
| Associative exploration engine Selections re-evaluate the whole dataset and reveal excluded, unrelated values. | No | source |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Metrics defined once in dbt rather than duplicated in the BI tool. editorial
- Open source with a free self-hosted edition. verified source
- Fits naturally into an existing analytics engineering workflow. editorial
Limitations
- Requires dbt; there is no standalone modelling path. editorial
- A young product with a small community and ecosystem. editorial
- Narrower visualisation and enterprise features than established tools. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Small, Medium
Data teams with an established dbt practice who want BI governed from the same place as their transformations, and who are comfortable with a younger tool.
Not applicable without dbt, and not a fit for organisations needing a mature enterprise platform.
Alternatives
Frequently asked questions
Yes, and that is the point of the product. Lightdash reads your dbt project for its models and metrics. Without a dbt practice there is nothing for it to build on and the architectural advantage disappears.
