What it is

Looker takes a position the rest of the category mostly does not: metrics are code. LookML is a modelling language held in version control, reviewed like software, and compiled into SQL that runs in your warehouse. Looker does not keep its own copy of the data.

That architecture produces the strongest governance story here. When finance and operations disagree about a number, there is one definition, with a commit history explaining how it changed. It also means query cost and performance land on your warehouse rather than on a BI engine you tune separately.

The trade is upfront effort and the need for engineering discipline. Looker rewards teams who treat analytics as a software practice and frustrates those who want a chart this afternoon.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

CapabilityStatusNotes
Interactive dashboards Dashboards users can filter and drill into rather than static images. Yes source
Data visualisation The chart library and formatting control available to authors. Yes source
Self-service analytics Business users building their own analysis without a developer. Yes source
Scheduled reporting Reports generated and distributed on a timetable. Yes source
Embedded analytics Charts and dashboards surfaced inside another application. Yes source
Data modelling A governed semantic layer defining measures and relationships. Yes source
Data connectivity Breadth of native connectors to databases and services. Yes source
Role-based access control Permissions by role, including row-level restriction. Yes source
Mobile access A supported mobile app or responsive consumption experience. Yes source
Vendor-managed cloud A hosted service operated by the vendor, so you do not run it yourself. Yes source
Free self-hosted edition A no-licence-cost edition you can run on your own infrastructure. No source
Usage or session-based reader licensing Readers charged by use rather than per seat, which changes the cost of a large occasional audience. No source
Planning and budgeting Forecasting and budget entry in the same product as the reporting. No source
Native dbt metric integration Reads models and metrics directly from a dbt project rather than a separate modelling layer. No source
Associative exploration engine Selections re-evaluate the whole dataset and reveal excluded, unrelated values. No source
AI-assisted analytics Natural-language query or generated insight features. Not verified
Paginated and pixel-perfect reporting Fixed-layout output for statutory, regulatory or print reporting. Not verified

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Version-controlled metric definitions, reviewable like code. editorial
  • Queries run in your warehouse, so there is no separate extract to govern. editorial
  • A strong API and embedding story for building analytics into products. editorial

Limitations

  • No on-premises deployment; it is a cloud service. verified source
  • Significant upfront modelling before the first useful dashboard. editorial
  • Warehouse query cost becomes a running expense to monitor. editorial
  • LookML is a specific skill with a narrower hiring pool. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

The right answer for organisations with a cloud warehouse, an engineering culture, and a real problem with inconsistent metric definitions. Particularly strong on BigQuery.

Wrong for a team with no warehouse, no appetite for a modelling layer in version control, or an immediate need for ad-hoc visual exploration.

Alternatives

Lightdash Lightdash A similar philosophy at much lower cost if your modelling already lives in dbt.
Microsoft Power BI Microsoft Self-hostable, cheaper to start, and a larger skills pool, with modelling held in the platform rather than in code.
Sigma Sigma Computing Also warehouse-native, but aimed at spreadsheet users rather than analytics engineers.
Looker Studio Google Free, and frequently what people actually mean when they say Looker. A reporting tool, not a governance layer.

Frequently asked questions

No, and the shared name causes real confusion. Looker is the governed enterprise platform built on LookML. Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio, is a free self-service reporting tool with no LookML layer. We compare them directly in Looker vs Looker Studio.

No. Looker connects to many SQL warehouses including Snowflake, Redshift and Databricks. It is often paired with BigQuery because both are Google Cloud products, but that is a convenience rather than a requirement.
