Looker vs Looker Studio: Same Name, Different Products

This is the most confusing naming in business intelligence, and the confusion is expensive: teams evaluate one while believing they are evaluating the other. They are separate products with different architectures that happen to share a brand.

The main differences

Looker is a governed platform. LookML in version control, metrics defined once, queries compiled to SQL and run in your warehouse. Licensed, enterprise, and built for consistency across a large organisation.

Looker Studio is a free reporting tool. Formerly Google Data Studio. No LookML, no semantic layer, no shared metric definitions. You connect a source, build a report, share a link.

They solve different problems. Looker exists because different teams report different numbers. Looker Studio exists because somebody needs a marketing dashboard this afternoon. Neither substitutes for the other.

Cost and scale. Looker Studio is free and slows noticeably on large datasets. Looker is a significant purchase and is built to scale.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Strengths and limitations

Drawn from each product's own profile, where every item is labelled a verified fact or an editorial judgement.

Which to choose

Choose Looker Studio for marketing and web reporting, Google Analytics and Ads data, small datasets, and anywhere free is the right price. It is genuinely good at that job.

Choose Looker when metric consistency across an organisation is the problem, you have a warehouse, and you can support a modelling practice.

If you are choosing between them on price, you have probably misidentified the problem. They are not tiers of one product, and treating Looker Studio as "Looker on a budget" leads to a governance gap you will discover later.

Frequently asked questions

No. They are different products with different architectures. Looker Studio was Google Data Studio before a rebrand that attached the Looker name to it. There is no upgrade path in the sense of one becoming the other.

Google has built connectivity between the two in some configurations, but Looker Studio has no LookML authoring of its own and is not a governance layer. Confirm current capability with Google if that integration matters to your plan.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.

Disclosure

Alongside advisory work I also build a CMMS and CAFM platform, so I have a commercial interest in enterprise software generally. No vendor here has paid for inclusion, placement or wording, and there are no reseller or affiliate arrangements.

Deciding between these?

Independent help scoring them against your actual requirement rather than a feature list, and designing the integration work that follows. No reseller arrangements.
