Tableau
by Salesforce
A visual analytics platform known for exploratory analysis and chart craft, available as Tableau Cloud or self-hosted Tableau Server.
What it is
Tableau built its reputation on exploratory visual analysis: the experience of dragging fields onto a canvas and seeing the shape of the data immediately. That remains its strongest suit, and analysts who work this way are usually reluctant to give it up.
Deployment is either Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server on your own infrastructure, which keeps it available to organisations with data residency constraints. Since the Salesforce acquisition the product has been drawn closer to that ecosystem, which matters if Salesforce is your system of record and matters very little otherwise.
Its modelling layer is lighter than Power BI's. That makes simple work faster and makes governed, enterprise-wide metric definitions more effort to maintain.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Exceptional exploratory analysis and chart control. editorial
- Self-hosted Tableau Server is available alongside Tableau Cloud. verified source
- A large, experienced practitioner community and hiring pool. editorial
Limitations
- Per-role licensing becomes expensive at scale, particularly for Creator seats. editorial
- A lighter semantic layer than Power BI, so governed enterprise metrics take more work. editorial
- Value is tied to analyst skill; it rewards expertise more than it democratises it. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise
Strongest where a capable analyst community exists and exploratory analysis is the point, and where chart quality is held to a high standard. Also a sound choice where self-hosting is required.
Harder to justify for small organisations on cost, and less natural than Power BI where the estate is predominantly Microsoft.

Frequently asked questions
Tableau is owned by Salesforce and sold as part of its portfolio, while remaining a distinct product you can buy and run without using Salesforce CRM. Integration with Salesforce data has deepened; it is not a dependency.
Yes. Tableau Server is the self-hosted deployment and is a long-standing option, which makes Tableau viable where data residency or network isolation rules out a vendor cloud.
