Tableau vs Qlik: Exploration Versus Association
Both are mature, both self-host, and both are bought by organisations that take analysis seriously. They differ in how a user arrives at an insight.

Qlik
Qlik's analytics platform, built on an associative in-memory engine that lets users explore relationships without pre-defined drill paths.
Full profileThe main differences
Two routes to discovery. Tableau is visual-first: you see the data and notice something. Qlik is selection-first: you choose values and the interface reveals what is and is not associated. Tableau suits analysts who think in pictures; Qlik suits those who think in sets.
Chart craft. Tableau is the stronger tool for producing genuinely well-designed visualisations, and for analysts who care about that, the difference is not subtle.
Data preparation. Qlik's scripting layer handles messy, multi-source extraction more comfortably, particularly from ERP systems. Tableau generally expects cleaner input or a preparation step elsewhere.
Market position. Tableau has a much larger practitioner community and hiring pool. Qlik's is smaller but deeply experienced in industrial sectors.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose Tableau if visual exploration and presentation quality are the point, and if you want a large pool of people who already know the tool.
Choose Qlik if your data is complex and related, if extraction from ERP systems is part of the problem, or if the associative view of excluded data is something your analysts will genuinely use.
Neither is a safe default over the other. This is a question about your analysts, not about the vendors.
Frequently asked questions
Tableau is easier to start with, because dragging fields onto a canvas is immediately intuitive. Qlik takes longer to become productive in, because the associative model is genuinely different from what most analysts have used, and scripting is a separate skill. Factor the learning curve into the evaluation rather than treating it as a detail.
