ThoughtSpot
by ThoughtSpot
A search and AI-led analytics platform where users type questions rather than building charts.
What it is
ThoughtSpot inverts the usual interaction. Instead of an analyst building a dashboard for others to read, users type a question and get a chart back, with follow-up questions refining it. The pitch is that this removes the analyst as a bottleneck.
The approach genuinely works, with one condition that is easy to underestimate: it depends entirely on a well-modelled, well-named dataset underneath. Search over a clean model feels close to magic; search over an unmodelled warehouse returns confidently wrong answers, which is worse than returning nothing.
So the real evaluation question is not whether the search works. It is whether your data is modelled well enough for search to be trustworthy.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Natural-language search that genuinely reduces analyst dependency. editorial
- Good embedding support for putting search into other applications. editorial
Limitations
- Answer quality depends completely on upstream modelling and naming. editorial
- Cloud only, with no self-hosted option. verified source
- Consumption pricing is hard to forecast before a pilot. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise
Organisations with a governed cloud warehouse and a large population of business users who want answers without learning a BI tool. Strong where the analyst queue is the bottleneck.
Premature where the underlying data model is inconsistent, which is the common case.

Frequently asked questions
The semantic layer has to be right: tables joined correctly, columns named the way users speak, measures defined once. Search exposes modelling weaknesses rather than hiding them, because an ambiguous question over an ambiguous model still returns a confident chart. Budget for the modelling work, not just the licence.
