Sigma vs ThoughtSpot: Spreadsheet or Search
Both are cloud-only, both run on top of a warehouse rather than storing data, and both aim to remove the analyst bottleneck. They choose opposite interfaces to do it.

The products
Sigma
Sigma Computing
A cloud analytics tool presenting warehouse data through a spreadsheet interface, so analysts work in familiar grid semantics.
Full profileThoughtSpot
ThoughtSpot
A search and AI-led analytics platform where users type questions rather than building charts.
Full profileThe main differences
The interface is the product. Sigma gives business users a spreadsheet grid over live warehouse data, with every operation pushed down as SQL. ThoughtSpot gives them a search box and returns a chart. Which works better depends entirely on how your users already think.
Modelling dependency. ThoughtSpot needs a clean, well-named semantic model or search returns confidently wrong answers. Sigma is more forgiving, because the user sees the grid and can check their own work.
Who adopts it. Sigma lands easily with finance and operations teams, who are fluent in spreadsheets. ThoughtSpot lands with executives and broad business populations who will not learn any tool.
Shared constraints. Both require a supported cloud warehouse, neither self-hosts, and both make warehouse compute a running cost that scales with interactive use.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose Sigma if your analysts live in spreadsheets and you want to retire unmanaged workbooks without retraining anyone. The familiarity is the whole value.
Choose ThoughtSpot if you have a governed model already and a large population who will never open a BI tool but will type a question.
Caution on ThoughtSpot: verify your semantic layer is genuinely ready before buying. Search over an ambiguous model is worse than no search, because the answers look authoritative.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Neither stores your data, and neither has a self-hosted option. Without Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Redshift there is no deployment path for either product.
Sources and review basis
Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
