Planon Integrated Workplace Management Solution
by Planon Rebranded
Planon is a Dutch IWMS vendor, now majority owned by Schneider Electric, selling a broad integrated workplace management suite covering real estate, maintenance, space and workplace services on the Planon Platform.
What it is
Planon is one of the few genuinely broad IWMS vendors left that is neither a maintenance tool that grew sideways nor a lease system that bolted on work orders. The current public product line is the Planon Integrated Workplace Management Solution, built on the Planon Platform and delivered under a continuous release model the vendor calls Planon Live. The name Planon Universe, which many directories and review sites still use, no longer appears in Planon software menus. It survives only in a legacy demo URL path. If you are comparing quotes against older research, check you are looking at the same thing.
Functionally the suite is wide. On the asset and maintenance side Planon names Asset Lifecycle Management with location, value, age, repair and replacement cost tracking, Asset Attribute Management, Reactive Work Orders, Preventive Maintenance, a Maintenance Plan Viewer that spans the enterprise, Vendor and Warranty Management, Procurement Management and Health and Safety Management. On the space and workplace side it names Space Management, Facility Service Management for employee service requests, Contract and SLA Management for holding service vendors to their agreements, a Kiosk that presents floor plans and occupancy, and a Workplace App.
Real estate is a first class capability rather than an afterthought. Planon sells Corporate Real Estate and Commercial Real Estate editions plus a dedicated Lease Accounting Solution that explicitly supports both FASB and IASB treatment. There are also vertical editions: a Campus Management Solution for higher education, Planon for Data Centers, and Field Services aimed at FM service providers rather than in house teams. That vertical packaging is unusual at this tier and worth asking about, because it changes what is configured out of the box.
Integration is productised into named connectors rather than left to a professional services conversation. Planon names Connect for AutoCAD, Connect for OpenBIM for bidirectional BIM exchange, Connect for Building Advisor which turns building automation system data into work orders and inspections, and Connect for Analytics. There is a first party SAP offering, Planon for SAP, covering real estate and facilities management for SAP. A partner marketplace of third party apps extends the platform, and the AppBuilder lets customers build their own apps on the platform.
The Schneider Electric relationship is now the dominant commercial fact about Planon. Schneider took a 25 percent minority stake in December 2020, then signed an agreement on 30 July 2024 to raise that to a controlling 80 percent. Planon disclosed 2023 revenue of 161 million euro and a 22 percent compound growth rate since 2019 in that announcement, and said it would be consolidated into Schneider Electric Energy Management. Planon has since confirmed the transaction completed. For a buyer this cuts two ways: deeper native integration with Schneider building systems including EcoStruxure Building Advisor, and a vendor whose roadmap priorities are now set partly by a hardware parent.
Two concrete due diligence items. First, Planon publishes no public documentation or release notes. Everything useful is behind the customer portal login, which means you cannot assess release cadence, API surface or upgrade impact before you sign. Second, the migration from the old Planon Universe customisation model to Planon Platform apps is a real project with real deadlines for existing customers. If you are inheriting an existing Planon estate rather than buying fresh, that migration is the first thing to scope.
Cloud delivery runs on Amazon Web Services. Planon publishes no price and offers no advertised trial, only a demo request.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Integration is productised into named, purchasable connectors rather than left to services: Connect for AutoCAD, Connect for OpenBIM, Connect for Building Advisor and Connect for Analytics. verified source
- Lease accounting explicitly supports both FASB and IASB treatment, which matters for groups reporting under two regimes. verified source
- Schneider Electric agreed in July 2024 to take a controlling 80 percent stake, consolidating Planon into its Energy Management business. verified source
Limitations
- No public documentation or release notes. Release information requires a customer portal login, so technical fit cannot be assessed before purchase. verified source
- The Planon Universe brand has effectively been retired in public marketing, so third party reviews and directories keyed to that name describe a product you can no longer buy under that label. editorial
- A platform migration that requires customisations to be rebuilt as apps is real project risk for existing customers and should be scoped before renewal. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise
Planon fits large organisations that genuinely need the full IWMS span and have the internal capability to run it. The clearest fits are corporate real estate teams managing multi country portfolios where lease accounting under both FASB and IASB is a hard requirement, universities and research campuses buying the Campus Management Solution, data centre operators, and FM service providers who need the Field Services edition to run client contracts rather than their own estate.
It is also a strong fit where the building systems story matters. If your estate already runs Schneider Electric controls, or you want building automation data to generate maintenance work rather than sit in a separate dashboard, Connect for Building Advisor is a productised path rather than an integration project. Equally, if you have an SAP backbone and a real estate module to feed, Planon for SAP is a named offering rather than a promise.
Planon does not fit a single site operation, a small FM team, or anyone who wants to be live in a quarter. There is no self serve entry point, no published price, no advertised trial, and the solution set is framed entirely around portfolios. A team whose actual problem is "we need work orders off a spreadsheet and PPMs that do not get missed" will spend more on Planon implementation than the problem is worth, and should look at CMMS tier products instead.
It also does not fit buyers who need to evaluate technical fit in detail before committing. The absence of public documentation is a genuine handicap: you cannot read the API reference, check integration patterns or review release notes without a sales relationship. If your procurement process requires technical evidence up front, budget time for a structured technical discovery under NDA and insist on written answers.
Typical use cases. Consolidating a dozen country level FM and real estate systems onto one platform with consolidated portfolio reporting. Running lease accounting and FM operations from one data set so that cost per square metre is defensible. Campus wide operations where space chargeback, maintenance and room booking need to share one space inventory. Smart building programmes where BMS and IoT data drive condition based maintenance. Outsourced FM providers managing SLA backed contracts across multiple client sites with segregated data.
Watch for. The platform migration deadline if you are an existing customer. Which named Connect modules are in your quote, because they are separate line items. Whether the vertical edition you are being shown is actually what gets implemented. And whether Schneider ownership changes anything about your preferred controls vendor relationship.
