Eptura Workplace vs Planon: workplace and space inside an IWMS
Both products in this comparison are cross-listed here from the facility management category, and that is the first thing a buyer should understand about them. Neither is a dedicated desk and room booking app. Both are integrated workplace management platforms in which workplace and space capability is one area of a much wider product, sitting alongside maintenance, assets, leases and facility operations. The full verified profiles for both, including capability rows, integration evidence and pricing position, live in the facility management category of this directory rather than here, and anything in this comparison that reads as general rather than specific is general on purpose: this category research pass did not re-verify either product.
Positionally the two are closer to each other than either is to anything else in this category. Eptura Workplace is the product formerly sold as iOFFICE, renamed in 2023, and it is one of several Eptura platform apps rather than the whole platform. Planon markets workplace and space management as modules of the single IWMS platform already profiled. In both cases you are buying into a platform and then enabling the workplace and space part of it, which is a different purchase from licensing a booking product.
In this category editorial scheme both products are primarily space management tools, that is a real estate discipline covering floor plans, allocation, chargeback and portfolio planning, with booking capability attached. They are not primarily workplace booking tools, where the measure of success is getting a person a desk or room with minimum friction. If you want to understand why those are different purchases with different buyers, the CAFM versus CMMS versus EAM versus IWMS guide covers the platform boundaries.

Full profileThe main differences
What the comparison actually turns on
Because both are platforms rather than point products, the decision is rarely made on workplace features. It is made on what else you need from the platform and which vendor you are already committed to. An organisation running Eptura Asset for maintenance will weigh Eptura Workplace differently from an organisation whose estate data already lives in Planon. That is not a cop-out: it is how IWMS purchases are actually decided, and a workplace module evaluation that ignores the platform context tends to produce a shortlist nobody can buy.
Three practical consequences follow, and they apply to both products equally.
- Implementation weight. An IWMS workplace module inherits the platform data model: buildings, floors, spaces, occupancy records, often organisational hierarchy and cost centres. That is exactly what makes allocation and chargeback possible, and exactly why standing it up takes longer than a booking app that needs a floor plan image and a list of desks.
- Employee-facing polish. Dedicated booking products compete on how quickly an employee can get a desk near their team. Platform modules compete on data integrity and reporting. Those are different design goals, and employees notice. A space planning module will not win over people who simply want to book a desk from their phone on the train.
- Calendar integration. This category established that Outlook and Teams support is the single most load-bearing capability for workplace products, and that the published evidence across the category is uneven. Neither product in this comparison had its calendar behaviour verified in this research pass, because both belong to the facility management category. That is recorded as could not be verified from published sources in this pass, not as a gap in the products, and it is the first thing to establish in either demonstration.
What neither of them has
Worth stating plainly, because it applies across this entire category and not just to these two: no product in the Workplace and Space Management category, including Microsoft Places, publishes any documentation of recurring-meeting behaviour. No product here therefore carries a verified recurring-booking claim. Recurring meetings are where room booking most often breaks in real deployments, and the fact that not one vendor in the category documents it is a finding about the category rather than about any one vendor. Test it with your own recurring series in both demonstrations.
Pricing
Neither product publishes a usable figure in a way this directory records, and both are enterprise quote purchases. For reference, five of the twelve products profiled in this category do publish figures: Envoy, Skedda, deskbird, Joan and WorkInSync. If published pricing matters to your process, an IWMS of any brand is the wrong shelf to be looking at.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Treat this as a platform decision, not a feature decision. Both products put workplace and space capability inside a wider IWMS, both will take real implementation effort, and both are quote-only. The right question is not which has the better desk booking screen but which platform you want to own for the next five years, and whether the workplace module is good enough that you will not end up buying a booking product alongside it anyway.
That last scenario is common and worth planning for rather than discovering. Several organisations end up with an IWMS as the system of record for space and a dedicated booking app as the employee-facing front end, integrated so the platform owns the floor plan and the booking tool owns the experience. If that is where you are likely to land, say so during procurement and make the integration part of the evaluation.
Before shortlisting either, read the full verified profiles in the facility management category, where both products are documented with sourced capability rows. This category page exists to place them against the dedicated workplace products, not to replace those profiles. The CAFM software buyer comparison is the better starting point for the platform question itself.
Frequently asked questions
Neither is primarily one. Both are integrated workplace management platforms in which workplace and space capability is one area alongside maintenance, assets and leases. In this category scheme both are primarily space management tools, a real estate discipline covering floor plans, allocation and chargeback, rather than workplace booking tools optimised for getting a person a desk quickly.
Could not be verified from published sources in this research pass. Both products are profiled in the facility management category and their calendar behaviour was not re-examined here. Across this whole category only Microsoft Places has verified calendar-native booking, so do not assume parity with that and do not accept a general claim of Microsoft integration as an answer.
Unverified, and that is true of every product in this category. No vendor here, Microsoft included, documents recurring-meeting behaviour, so no product carries a verified recurring-booking claim. Bring a real recurring series to the demonstration.
In the facility management category of this directory. Both are cross-listed here because workplace and space genuinely is part of what they do, but their verified capability rows, sources and pricing notes are recorded once, in that category.
