IFS Ultimo vs IBM Maximo
These two sit at different tiers and the comparison is useful precisely for that reason: it is the clearest way to see what the enterprise premium actually buys. Ultimo is IFS's mid-market product; Maximo is the category's Tier 1 reference point.

Full profileThe main differences
Scope. Maximo is substantially broader: asset performance management, visual inspection, asset investment planning and MRO inventory optimisation as separate applications. Ultimo covers maintenance competently and then goes sideways rather than deeper, adding Fleet, HSE, Infrastructure Assets, Medical and Operations modules. That lateral breadth is genuinely valuable if it replaces two or three other systems.
Entry point. Ultimo starts at five users on its Professional edition. Maximo's published Essentials tier starts under US$40,000 a year with a twelve-month minimum. For a mid-sized organisation that difference is decisive.
Deployment. Maximo documents cloud, on-premises and hybrid. Ultimo is cloud, with the vendor stating that the product's future is in the cloud and no clear statement on whether on-premises remains available to new customers.
Transparency. Maximo publishes extensive documentation, an API catalogue and an entry price. Ultimo publishes edition entry points but very little feature detail: no API documentation, no module specification, and core functions including asset hierarchy, purchasing, contractor management and IoT connectors are not described anywhere public. A buyer cannot self-qualify Ultimo.

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose IFS Ultimo if you are mid-market, want to be running in months rather than a year, and especially if Fleet or HSE would otherwise be a second system. The five-user entry point makes it reachable where Maximo is not.
Choose IBM Maximo if you have enterprise asset obligations: regulated reliability, asset-level financial accountability, on-premises requirements, or thousands of assets across many sites.
The threshold between the two tiers is the real question, and it is covered honestly in CMMS vs EAM. Buying up a tier before you need it is a common and expensive mistake.

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
