IBM Maximo vs Octave Attune EAM

These two are the genuine heavyweights of enterprise asset management, and most Tier 1 shortlists contain both. They are closer in capability than vendor marketing suggests, so the decision usually turns on three things: deployment constraints, procurement depth, and which ownership story you are more comfortable with.

One practical note before anything else. Octave Attune EAM is the product previously sold as Infor EAM and then HxGN EAM. If you are comparing a renewal quote against a new one, check which name the paperwork uses, because all three refer to the same product line.

The main differences

Scope. Both cover the full asset lifecycle. Maximo reaches further into asset performance management, visual inspection and asset investment planning as separate suite applications. Attune EAM is stronger in one specific respect: linear and geospatial assets, where its CAD and digital twin handling is better suited to networks, pipelines and distributed infrastructure.

Procurement. Attune EAM documents requisitions, quotes and purchase orders in the product with a SAP-certified S/4HANA integration. Maximo's procurement position we could not verify in this pass, so it shows as unverified rather than absent. If procurement inside the maintenance system is a hard requirement, press both vendors on it and weight Attune's documented position accordingly.

Deployment. This is the clearest difference. Maximo explicitly supports cloud, on-premises and hybrid across three hyperscalers. Attune EAM's own G-Cloud listing contradicts itself on on-premises, so we record it as unverified. For an organisation whose data cannot leave its estate, Maximo is the safer answer today.

Evaluation and licensing. Maximo publishes an entry figure, "starting under US$40K per year" for Essentials, and offers a guided trial. Attune EAM publishes no price, states it has no free trial, and its AWS route is private-offer only with a five-licence minimum. Maximo is substantially easier to evaluate and budget.

Stability. Maximo has been an IBM product throughout. Attune EAM has changed hands twice in five years, and the transition is still visible in documentation hosted on Hexagon domains and a broken documentation link on its own product page.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Which to choose

Choose IBM Maximo if you need on-premises or hybrid deployment, if reliability engineering and asset performance management are core rather than aspirational, or if you want to budget and trial before committing. It is also the better bet where continuity over a decade matters.

Choose Octave Attune EAM if procurement must live in the maintenance system, if you manage linear or geospatial assets, or if you are an existing Infor EAM or HxGN EAM customer where staying put is materially cheaper than migrating.

Either way, the decision that will actually determine success is asset hierarchy design, not the product choice. Both platforms will produce unusable reports from a badly structured register.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the same product line under its third owner: Infor EAM, sold to Hexagon in 2021 and renamed HxGN EAM, then renamed Octave Attune EAM after Hexagon spun its software businesses out as Octave in May 2026. Infor no longer sells an EAM of its own.

Unanswerable from public information, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. IBM publishes an Essentials entry figure; Octave publishes nothing. Both are quoted in practice, and in both cases implementation and data work typically exceed the licence in year one.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
