IBM Maximo vs SAP EAM

This is not really a feature comparison. It is a decision about whether maintenance belongs in a best-of-breed system that integrates with finance, or inside the ERP that already holds the ledger. Both answers are defensible and the right one depends almost entirely on what your organisation treats as the system of record.

Note also that there is no single product called SAP Enterprise Asset Management. It is a solution area, with S/4HANA Asset Management at its core and several surrounding components, which makes scoping the first real task of an SAP evaluation.

The main differences

Maintenance depth. Maximo is the deeper maintenance product. Asset performance management, reliability-centred maintenance, visual inspection and asset investment planning are first-class capabilities. SAP's maintenance functionality is solid and mature, built on decades of plant maintenance precedent, but it is not where SAP competes.

Financial integration. SAP wins this decisively for an SAP shop. Maintenance orders settle against the same cost objects as procurement and finance, so maintenance cost reconciles without an interface. Maximo integrates with SAP, and does so with a documented connector, but an integration is still an integration: it has latency, failure modes and an owner.

Deployment. Both support cloud and on-premises. Maximo states hybrid explicitly across three hyperscalers; for SAP, hybrid is implied by on-premises S/4HANA integrating with cloud APM but we found no explicit vendor statement, so it shows as unverified.

Scoping. Maximo is a suite with named applications you select. SAP EAM is a portfolio where even the mobile app you receive depends on your deployment model, Service and Asset Manager on-premises versus Maintenance Assistant on public cloud. That is genuinely harder to reason about without SAP or a partner.

Evidence quality. We should be transparent: sap.com refused automated access throughout this review, so several SAP capability rows are unverified. That reflects a blocked website rather than a thin product, and the SAP profile says so.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Which to choose

Choose SAP if S/4HANA is your system of record and maintenance cost accuracy against the ledger is the requirement. The integration advantage is real and it is not replicable with a connector.

Choose IBM Maximo if maintenance and reliability performance is the problem you are solving, if you are not an SAP shop, or if you want a product you can scope and price without a partner engagement. Maximo plus a finance integration beats SAP EAM plus a reliability gap for most asset-intensive operators who are not already committed to S/4HANA.

The integration question either way is covered in CMMS and ERP integration.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.

Disclosure

Alongside advisory work I also build a CMMS and CAFM platform, so I have a commercial interest in enterprise software generally. No vendor here has paid for inclusion, placement or wording, and there are no reseller or affiliate arrangements.

Deciding between these?

Independent help scoring them against your actual requirement rather than a feature list, and designing the integration work that follows. No reseller arrangements.
