IBM Maximo vs MaintainX

These two products are not really competitors, and that is exactly why the comparison is worth publishing. They turn up on the same shortlist surprisingly often, usually because an organisation has not yet decided which tier of problem it has. Running them side by side is the fastest way to find out.

The main differences

Cost of entry. Not close. MaintainX is free to start and USD 20 per user per month for Essential. Maximo's published Essentials tier starts under US$40,000 a year with a twelve-month non-cancellable minimum. Before implementation.

Time to value. MaintainX can have a team raising and closing work orders this week. Maximo is a programme measured in months, and the work is asset data, hierarchy design, failure coding and integration rather than installation.

What the premium buys. Asset performance management, asset investment planning, MRO inventory optimisation, visual inspection, reliability-centred maintenance, lifecycle costing, a configuration surface deep enough to avoid custom code, and cloud, on-premises or hybrid deployment. If none of that list is a requirement, you are paying for capability you will not use.

What you give up going light. Asset lifecycle costing is unverified for MaintainX; multi-site, IoT sensors and SSO sit on its unpriced Enterprise tier; and there is no on-premises option. For regulated reliability obligations or asset-level financial accountability, those gaps are disqualifying.

Deployment. Maximo documents cloud, on-premises and hybrid. MaintainX is cloud, and we could not even verify that as an explicit vendor statement.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Which to choose

Choose MaintainX if the question is "what work is outstanding and did it get done". Most organisations asking that question buy too much software, and MaintainX will answer it in weeks for a fraction of the cost.

Choose IBM Maximo if the question is "what has this asset cost us over eight years, what is its failure pattern, and when should we replace it". That needs lifecycle costing, reliability analysis and procurement in one system, and the lighter tier genuinely cannot do it.

Deciding which question you are actually asking is the whole task, and it is worth more than any feature comparison. The test is in CMMS vs EAM.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.

Disclosure

Alongside advisory work I also build a CMMS and CAFM platform, so I have a commercial interest in enterprise software generally. No vendor here has paid for inclusion, placement or wording, and there are no reseller or affiliate arrangements.

Deciding between these?

Independent help scoring them against your actual requirement rather than a feature list, and designing the integration work that follows. No reseller arrangements.
