IBM Maximo vs IFS Cloud EAM

Both are Tier 1 enterprise EAM platforms aimed at asset-intensive industries, and both make deployment flexibility a central claim. The useful differences are in how each vendor's portfolio is organised and, awkwardly for IFS, in how much each one publishes.

The main differences

Deployment. Both are strong and this is close. Maximo supports cloud, on-premises and hybrid across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. IFS states that IFS Cloud runs as IFS-managed cloud, customer-managed cloud or on-premises with identical functionality and the ability to move between them, which is arguably the cleaner promise, although it is a platform-level statement rather than an EAM-specific one.

API design. Both document their APIs properly. One real difference: IFS's standard APIs are atomic, so a structured inbound message must be decomposed into several calls through middleware or a service bus. That is a genuine integration cost that Maximo's REST and OSLC interfaces do not impose in the same way.

Portfolio clarity. Maximo is one suite with named applications. IFS sells three overlapping asset products, IFS Cloud EAM, Ultimo and Copperleaf, so the first task in an IFS evaluation is establishing which one you are being offered. That is a real friction, not a presentational quibble.

What is published. Maximo publishes an entry price, a guided trial and extensive public documentation. We could not read a single ifs.com page during this review: every request returned HTTP 429. Ten of thirteen IFS capability rows are therefore unverified, and we would rather say that than fill them in from memory.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Which to choose

Choose IBM Maximo on the current public evidence. It publishes more, can be evaluated faster, has the larger partner ecosystem and imposes less integration overhead.

Choose IFS Cloud EAM if you are already an IFS Applications or IFS Cloud customer, where the platform continuity and the single functional codebase across deployment models are worth a great deal, or if the deployment-mobility promise specifically matters to you. If you shortlist it, get the capability detail directly from IFS, because the website will not give it to you.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
