Energy Management Software

Four different kinds of product are sold as energy management software, and they are not alternatives to one another. Buying the wrong one is common because all four produce a dashboard with a consumption chart on it.

Energy management proper is about meter data, consumption, utility bills and tariffs: it answers what you used and what it cost. ESG and carbon reporting is about converting activity into emissions across reporting scopes for disclosure, which is an accounting problem with an audit trail rather than an operational one. Power monitoring is electrical: power quality, loading and protection, usually tied to switchgear. Fault detection and diagnostics analyses building system behaviour to find equipment running badly, which saves energy as a consequence of finding faults rather than by measuring consumption.

Each profile here states what the product is not, as well as what it is. A fault detection platform will not manage your utility bills, and an ESG suite will not tell you that an air handling unit is heating and cooling simultaneously.

One entry in this category is a free government benchmarking tool rather than commercial software, and is labelled as such rather than compared on commercial terms.

How to choose

How to choose in this category

Start from the question you need answered. "Reduce energy cost" splits immediately into: we do not know what we use, our bills may be wrong, our plant is running badly, or we have to report emissions. Those are four products. Energy management systems for buildings sets out the landscape.

Check your data before you buy a platform to analyse it. Most disappointing deployments in this category fail on data, not software. Meter coverage, meter units, resets and rollovers all corrupt reporting silently. Validating meter units and handling meter resets and rollovers are worth reading before a procurement, not after.

Decide whether you need bills or telemetry, or both. Utility bill management works from invoices and is excellent for cost, tariff validation and portfolio benchmarking. Interval telemetry works from meters and is necessary for anomaly detection and demand management. Products are usually much stronger at one than the other.

For fault detection, ask what it needs from the BMS. These platforms depend on points, naming and trend availability, and the effort is in the integration rather than the licence. BMS energy optimisation, FDD and analytics covers what good looks like, and threshold versus statistical anomaly detection explains why simple rules often outperform a model on building data.

Keep ESG reporting separate in your mind. If the driver is disclosure, the requirements are auditability, emission factors and scope boundaries, not real-time dashboards. ESG and sustainability reporting from asset data covers the data lineage that makes a disclosure defensible.

Note how the product is sold. At least one platform in this category is licensed almost entirely through system integrators rather than as a subscription, which changes who you depend on for configuration and support. The profiles record that where it applies.

Frequently asked questions

Because they are quoted on portfolio size, meter counts and data volumes, and several are sold through integrators rather than directly. Where a vendor publishes a figure on its own site this directory records it with the source and date, and where it does not the profile says so rather than estimating.

For portfolio benchmarking against peers, a free tool can genuinely be enough, and this directory includes one. It is labelled as a free, US-centric government benchmarking tool rather than a commercial platform, because it does not do metering, bill validation, anomaly detection or fault detection and should not be compared as though it did.

Because analysis inherits every defect in the measurement. Incomplete meter coverage, inconsistent units, meter resets and rollovers and unmapped points all produce confident, wrong reports. Any serious deployment should budget for data validation as a work package rather than assuming the platform will handle it.

FDD analyses building system data to find equipment running incorrectly, such as valves leaking by or simultaneous heating and cooling. It saves energy as a side effect of finding faults. You need it if you have a reasonably instrumented BMS and plant worth optimising. You do not need it if you cannot yet answer what you consume, because FDD will not tell you that.

No. Energy management works from meters and bills and answers what you used and what it cost. ESG reporting converts activity data into emissions across reporting scopes for disclosure, which needs emission factors, scope boundaries and an audit trail. Some products do both, many do one well and the other thinly, and this directory labels which is which.
