EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert vs EnergyCAP
These two products answer completely different questions, and the only reason they end up on the same shortlist is that both get filed under energy software. EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert is electrical power monitoring. EnergyCAP is utility bill management. One tells you whether your electrical system is healthy. The other tells you whether your invoices are right and where the cost sits. Neither substitutes for the other, and an organisation with both problems needs both.
PME is on premises server software from Schneider Electric for electrical system health, power quality analysis and energy efficiency. Its distinctive capability is automated voltage disturbance waveform analysis that identifies root cause and the direction of a fault, which determines whether a disturbance originated upstream on the utility network or downstream in your own plant. That single answer settles arguments with the utility and with equipment suppliers. It also automatically groups related events into incidents with a timeline view, turning hundreds of device alarms from one disturbance into a single actionable record, and it includes thermal and arc flash monitoring, an electrical safety capability nothing else in this category offers.
EnergyCAP is a utility bill accounting and energy management platform with a complete finance workflow: bill auditing and approval before payment, account and meter tracking, campus chargebacks, cost avoidance and an accounting export to the general ledger, plus facility benchmarking and ENERGY STAR benchmarking support. Note the precision there: support for ENERGY STAR benchmarking, which is a free US EPA programme. Automated filing or submission to the EPA is not supported by the available evidence.
Both records are thin, and for different reasons that you should know. PME is the thinner of the two on documentation depth. The regional product pages are marketing level: Modbus and OPC support, API availability and licence structure are all unstated, much of the detailed material findable dates from 2016 to 2021, and no canonical global product page exists because Schneider serves the range across many regional paths, with one widely circulated range identifier now returning HTTP 404. EnergyCAP is blocked rather than thin: energycap.com returns HTTP 403 to automated access on the home page and four subpaths, and the capability detail was recovered instead from two vendor authored pages on the company own info subdomain, which agree with each other.

Full profileThe main differences
What each actually tells you
- PME documents: energy metering, benchmarking, reporting and anomaly detection, with waveform level power quality analysis and incident grouping as the real value.
- EnergyCAP documents: utility bills, energy metering, anomaly detection, carbon reporting, benchmarking, dashboards and reporting.
- Overlap: metering, benchmarking, reporting and anomaly detection appear on both lists, but mean different things. PME anomaly detection concerns electrical events. EnergyCAP anomaly detection concerns consumption and cost patterns.
The explicit non overlap
PME is not an energy management platform. It has no utility bill management and no carbon reporting, both of which Schneider sells separately as EcoStruxure Resource Advisor. The shared EcoStruxure prefix misleads buyers into treating them as one product, and they are not. Equally, EnergyCAP will tell you nothing about power quality, arc flash risk or whether a voltage sag came from the grid or from your own switchgear.
Deployment is the other hard difference
PME is on premises server software, not a cloud service. It installs on Windows Server with SQL Server and cannot be installed on a domain controller, so it carries server, database licensing and IT administration overhead that a SaaS product does not. Current Schneider material lists Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016 for the current release, with separate standalone and distributed database server configurations. Whether a cloud or hybrid option exists could not be verified from published sources. EnergyCAP is cloud.
Unverified on both sides
For PME: tariff analysis, dashboards, API, mobile access, utility bills, carbon reporting, water and gas, building integration, fault detection and demand management could not be verified from published sources, and the integration list is empty even though Modbus support is near certain in practice for this class of product. That is a deliberate refusal to assume rather than a claim of absence. For EnergyCAP: API, mobile access, emissions scope structure, water and gas as distinct features, tariff management, building integration and demand management are all unverified because of the block.
Neither publishes pricing. PME is typically procured as part of a wider electrical metering and power management project, and whether capability is gated behind editions could not be established. Note also that EcoStruxure Power Advisor is a separate paid service applied to PME data, so the power quality value may carry a second line item.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Do not choose between these. Work out which question is actually urgent. If equipment is tripping, if you are arguing with the utility about disturbances, if you have arc flash and thermal risk to manage, or if you run critical electrical infrastructure, that is PME territory and no bill management platform will help. If nobody can tell you what the estate spent, if invoices go unchecked, if chargebacks are a spreadsheet and if a benchmarking ordinance is looming, that is EnergyCAP territory and no power monitoring platform will help.
Large campuses, hospitals and industrial sites frequently need both, and in that case the sequencing question is which one pays back first. Usually it is the bill side, because invoice errors and unallocated cost are recoverable immediately and with no electrical work, whereas PME is part of a metering infrastructure project with hardware, installation and server estate attached. If you are a Schneider electrical house already, be aware that the energy management and bill side of the EcoStruxure family is Resource Advisor, a separate product with a separate price.
Relevant reading: BMS vs SCADA, when to use which for where power monitoring sits in the wider control stack, validating meter units in energy reports for the bill side, and threshold vs statistical anomaly detection, since both products advertise anomaly detection and mean different things by it.
Frequently asked questions
No. PME has no utility bill management and no carbon reporting. Schneider sells those separately as EcoStruxure Resource Advisor. The shared EcoStruxure prefix leads buyers to assume one product where there are two.
It is on premises server software, installing on Windows Server with SQL Server and not installable on a domain controller. Whether a cloud hosted or hybrid option exists could not be verified from published sources, so ask Schneider directly.
PME, on documentation depth: the regional pages are marketing level, no protocols or API are stated, no canonical global page exists and much detailed material dates from 2016 to 2021. EnergyCAP is a different problem, a HTTP 403 block on the main site, partly recovered from the vendor own info subdomain.
EnergyCAP supports ENERGY STAR benchmarking. Automated filing or submission is not supported by the available evidence. ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is itself a free US EPA tool, US centric by design, and services that submit on your behalf are separate commercial products.
