EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert
by Schneider Electric
Power monitoring software from Schneider Electric for electrical system health, power quality analysis and energy efficiency. Includes automated voltage disturbance waveform analysis and incident grouping of electrical alarms.
What it is
Power Monitoring Expert, usually shortened to PME, solves a different problem from every other product in this category except Verdigris, and it is important not to shortlist it alongside them as though they were alternatives. Schneider describes PME as power monitoring software that gives insight into electrical system health and energy efficiency, with visualisation and analysis tools, and a Schneider product information sheet lists its capability set as power quality monitoring, electrical distribution monitoring and alarming, and thermal and arc flash monitoring, calling the whole an integrated power and energy management platform. Arc flash and thermal monitoring are electrical safety functions. No energy management platform in this category does anything comparable, because they are not trying to.
The power quality work is the core. PME performs automated analysis of voltage disturbance waveforms to help identify root causes and the direction of a fault, which is the difference between knowing you had a voltage sag and knowing whether it originated upstream on the utility network or downstream in your own plant. That distinction decides who pays and what you fix, and it is why industrial sites with sensitive processes buy this class of software. A 2021 Schneider announcement cites multi site power quality performance analysis and point by point waveform analysis. Related events are grouped automatically into incidents with a timeline view of event sequences, which is a genuinely useful feature: a single electrical disturbance can generate hundreds of alarms across dozens of devices, and grouping them into one incident is the difference between an actionable record and noise.
On the energy side PME supports energy visualisation, modelling, benchmarking and audit data, with cost allocation mentioned within efficiency audits, and ION modules can be configured on physical meters. It includes reporting tools and can generate compliance reports. Schneider also sells EcoStruxure Power Advisor, a separate service that applies expert advice to data from a PME system to find power quality issues across the wider electrical network, which tells you that deep analysis is positioned as an add on service rather than something PME does unaided.
What PME is not. It is not a utility bill management system. Cost allocation within an audit is not invoice capture and validation, and anyone with an invoice problem should buy EnergyCAP or MRI Energy. It is not a carbon accounting or ESG disclosure platform; Schneider sells Resource Advisor for that, and the two are separately licensed products that happen to share the EcoStruxure prefix. It is not a building fault detection and diagnostics platform: it monitors electrical distribution, not HVAC and mechanical plant, so it will not find a stuck damper or simultaneous heating and cooling the way SkySpark or Clockworks will. And it is not a portfolio energy reporting tool for a property team. Treating PME as interchangeable with an energy management platform is the main error buyers make with the EcoStruxure range.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.
| Capability | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting and exports Scheduled reporting and data export. | Yes | Reporting tools including compliance reports. source |
| Portfolio benchmarking Comparing buildings across a portfolio on normalised metrics. | Yes | Benchmarking named among the energy visualisation and modelling tools. Electrical system benchmarking, not portfolio peer comparison. source |
| Anomaly detection Detecting abnormal consumption against a baseline. | Yes | Automated voltage disturbance waveform analysis to identify root cause and fault direction; related events grouped automatically into incidents with a timeline view. source |
| Energy metering and submetering Collecting and storing meter data, including submeters. | Yes | Energy visualisation, modelling and audit data. ION modules can be configured on physical meters. source |
| Mobile access Mobile or responsive access to dashboards and alerts. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. | Not verified | No API statement on the pages read. |
| Dashboards Configurable dashboards for consumption and cost. | Not verified | Data visualisation tools are described but dashboards are not named on the product page. A Schneider community post about an online demo refers to dashboards, which is weaker evidence and not relied on. |
| BMS and building integration Taking data directly from building management systems. | Not verified | Connects to smart devices across electrical systems. BMS integration is not described on the pages read. |
| Demand and load management Managing peak demand and load shifting. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Fault detection and diagnostics Identifying equipment faults from system behaviour. | Not verified | Electrical fault direction analysis is performed, but this is not building systems FDD and no such claim is made. |
| Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting Emissions accounting across reporting scopes. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Carbon and emissions reporting Converting consumption into emissions for reporting. | Not verified | No emissions reporting described. Schneider sells Resource Advisor for that. |
| Tariff and cost analysis Modelling tariffs and validating charges against them. | Not verified | Cost allocation is mentioned within efficiency audits. Tariff modelling is not described. |
| Water and gas tracking Tracking utilities beyond electricity. | Not verified | No statement found. Electrical focus. |
| Utility bill management Capturing, validating and allocating utility invoices. | Not verified | No invoice capture or bill validation described. Cost allocation in an audit is not bill management. |

| Note | Schneider publishes no pricing on any of the regional PME product pages read. PME is typically procured as part of a wider electrical metering and power management project, and whether capability is gated behind editions could not be established. Note also that EcoStruxure Power Advisor is a separate paid service applied to PME data, so the power quality analysis value may carry a second line item. |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Automated voltage disturbance waveform analysis that identifies root cause and the direction of a fault, which determines whether a disturbance originated upstream on the utility network or downstream in your own plant. verified source
- Automatic grouping of related events into incidents with a timeline view, which turns hundreds of device alarms from a single disturbance into one actionable record. verified source
- Includes thermal and arc flash monitoring alongside power quality, an electrical safety capability that nothing else in this category offers. verified source
Limitations
- Not an energy management platform. No utility bill management and no carbon reporting, both of which Schneider sells separately as Resource Advisor. The shared EcoStruxure prefix misleads buyers into treating them as one product. editorial
- On premises server software, not a cloud service. It installs on Windows Server with SQL Server and cannot be installed on a domain controller, so it carries server, database licensing and IT administration overhead that a SaaS product does not. verified source
- Marketing level product pages. Modbus and OPC support, API availability and licence structure are all unstated across the regional pages, and much of the detailed material findable is from 2016 to 2021. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise
PME fits organisations where electrical reliability and power quality carry real cost: manufacturing plants with sensitive process equipment, semiconductor and pharmaceutical facilities, data centres, hospitals, airports, water treatment and any site where a voltage disturbance causes scrap, downtime or a safety event. It fits particularly well where the electrical estate is already Schneider, since ION modules can be configured on physical meters and the PowerLogic metering range is the natural data source. The arc flash and thermal monitoring functions make it relevant to electrical safety programmes, which no other product here addresses. Organisations needing electrical compliance reports and audit records are well served. Multi site industrial operators get the multi site power quality performance analysis.
It is a reasonable complement to, rather than a substitute for, an energy management platform: PME for the electrical layer, something else for utility bills and carbon. Budget for both if you need both.
It is a poor fit for commercial property teams whose requirement is consumption reporting, bill validation, benchmarking or carbon disclosure across a portfolio of offices or retail units. It is a poor fit for building HVAC fault detection. It is a poor fit for small sites: PME is a substantial piece of software, typically deployed as part of a wider electrical project with metering hardware, and Schneider publishes no pricing. Buyers should establish several things the product pages do not state: the deployment model, since on premises versus cloud is not confirmed anywhere in the material read, Modbus and OPC support, which the pages do not cover despite being standard in this class of product, whether there is a documented application programming interface, and the licence structure including whether capability is gated behind editions. Also establish whether EcoStruxure Power Advisor is required to get the power quality value, since Schneider positions that as a separate expert service applied to PME data.

Frequently asked questions
No. It is power monitoring and power quality software for electrical systems. It includes energy visualisation and modelling, but it does not manage utility bills or produce carbon disclosures. Schneider sells EcoStruxure Resource Advisor for that, as a separate product.
They solve different problems. PME monitors the electrical system: power quality, waveforms, alarms, arc flash and thermal conditions. Resource Advisor aggregates enterprise energy, bill and sustainability data for analysis and reporting. Large sites often need both, and they are licensed separately.
On premises, confirmed. A Schneider document states you can install Power Monitoring Expert software on servers using a list of Windows operating systems, and that it cannot be installed on domain controllers. A current Schneider FAQ lists Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016 Standard and Datacenter for PME 2024 R3, with SQL Server in standalone or distributed database configurations. Whether a cloud hosted option exists was not established.
Possibly. Schneider describes Power Advisor as applying expert advice to data from a PME system to find power quality issues across the wider electrical network, which suggests the deepest analysis is delivered as a separate service. Clarify scope and cost for both.
