What it is

A note on sourcing. The main marketing site, energycap.com, returns HTTP 403 Forbidden to automated access on every path tried, including the home page and four subpaths. No spoofed user agent was used. The capability detail below therefore comes from EnergyCAP own campaign subdomain, info.energycap.com, which serves normally and is vendor authored. Two pages there were read and agree with each other. Pricing and any API documentation remain unverifiable, and are recorded as unknown rather than guessed.

What is verifiable from sources outside the block concerns ownership and lineage, and it is significant. In August 2022 EnergyCAP, described in the announcement as a Resurgens Technology Partners backed energy and sustainability enterprise resource planning provider, acquired Wattics, a Dublin based energy management analytics and monitoring software company spun out of University College Dublin. The stated rationale was to extend the EnergyCAP platform with advanced energy management analytics at the building and device level. As of this research pass wattics.com returns an HTTP 301 permanent redirect to energycap.com, which is strong evidence that Wattics is no longer separately marketed and that its analytics now sit inside EnergyCAP. Wattics is therefore excluded from this directory as a separate product and consolidated here.

The vendor material confirms what shape the product is, and it is a bill and ledger platform before it is anything else. EnergyCAP names utility bill auditing, including auditing and approving bills before payment, account and meter tracking, an accounting export, campus chargebacks and cost avoidance. That is a finance workflow: capture the invoice, audit it, approve it, allocate the cost, export to the general ledger. The company self describes as an energy and sustainability enterprise resource planning provider, which is consistent. EnergyCAP, LLC is based in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

Around that core, EnergyCAP names interval data and weather data ingestion, facility benchmarking and ENERGY STAR benchmarking, greenhouse gas tracking, customisable dashboards that can be shared or embedded, utility data reporting and project tracking. It also claims to spot data and metering problems, billing anomalies, and mechanical or electrical control problems, which is an anomaly detection claim spanning both the billing and the physical side. The ENERGY STAR benchmarking capability is worth noting specifically: it means EnergyCAP can feed the free EPA tool profiled elsewhere in this category, which is a common requirement for US public sector buyers under local benchmarking ordinances.

What EnergyCAP is not. It is not a fault detection and diagnostics platform in the SkySpark or Clockworks sense. It says it spots mechanical and electrical control problems, but no rules engine, diagnostic library or ranked avoidable cost output is described, and buyers needing real FDD should not treat this as equivalent. It is not a power quality monitoring product. It is not a full ESG disclosure suite in the IBM Envizi sense: greenhouse gas tracking is named but no Scope 1, 2 and 3 structure, no financed emissions and no named reporting framework support appears. And it is not a building controls or demand management platform. Treat it as utility bill accounting with energy analytics attached.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

Mobile access Mobile or responsive access to dashboards and alerts. Not verified No mobile application named on the readable vendor pages.
Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. Not verified No API named on the two readable vendor subdomain pages. The main site remains blocked.
BMS and building integration Taking data directly from building management systems. Not verified Meter data import is named. No BMS integration or building protocol statement found.
Demand and load management Managing peak demand and load shifting. Not verified No statement found on the readable pages.
Fault detection and diagnostics Identifying equipment faults from system behaviour. Not verified Mechanical and electrical control problems are said to be spotted, but no FDD rules engine is described. Not asserted.
Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting Emissions accounting across reporting scopes. Not verified Greenhouse gas tracking is named but nothing states Scope 1, 2 or 3 accounting structure.
Tariff and cost analysis Modelling tariffs and validating charges against them. Not verified Cost avoidance is named, but rate and tariff management is not described on the readable pages.
Water and gas tracking Tracking utilities beyond electricity. Not verified Not named as a distinct feature on the readable pages, although a utility bill platform would normally handle them.

NoteNo figure published on the readable vendor pages, both of which link to a pricing section without showing amounts. The main site, energycap.com, returns HTTP 403 to automated access, so it cannot be confirmed whether a figure is published there. Licensing model is commercial: the company is a Resurgens Technology Partners backed commercial software vendor, which the Wattics acquisition announcement establishes. Buyers should also confirm whether the acquired Wattics analytics are included or licensed as a separate module.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • A complete finance workflow for utility cost: bill auditing and approval before payment, account and meter tracking, campus chargebacks, cost avoidance and an accounting export to the general ledger. verified source
  • Names both facility benchmarking and ENERGY STAR benchmarking, so it can feed the free EPA tool that many US local benchmarking ordinances require. verified source
  • Acquired Wattics in August 2022 to add building and device level energy management analytics, combining bill management and monitoring analytics under one vendor. verified source

Limitations

  • The main marketing site blocks automated access, returning HTTP 403 on the home page and four subpaths, so API documentation and pricing could not be verified and the profile rests on campaign subdomain pages. verified source
  • Greenhouse gas tracking is named but with no Scope 1, 2 and 3 structure or named reporting framework, so it will not satisfy an assured ESG disclosure on its own. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

EnergyCAP suits organisations whose dominant pain is utility invoice volume and cost accuracy: public sector bodies, school districts, universities, local government, healthcare systems and large commercial portfolios with hundreds or thousands of accounts across multiple suppliers and rate structures. The enterprise resource planning framing and the accounting orientation point at finance and energy management teams who need auditable cost data, chargeback and budget variance, not just a consumption chart. The Wattics addition means organisations that also want submeter level monitoring can plausibly get both from one vendor, which is a genuine advantage over point solutions. US public sector buyers subject to local benchmarking ordinances are particularly well served, given the named ENERGY STAR benchmarking capability and the campus chargeback function.

It is a poor fit where the requirement is operational fault diagnosis on building plant, where electrical power quality is the concern, or where regulatory ESG disclosure against named frameworks is the primary driver, since greenhouse gas tracking alone will not satisfy an assured disclosure. Four things remain unestablished and should be put in writing before purchase: whether a documented application programming interface exists, whether there is mobile access, whether rate and tariff management is supported, and the pricing basis, since EnergyCAP publishes no figure and the main site cannot be read. Buyers should also confirm how the acquired Wattics analytics are now licensed, since they may be a separate module rather than included.

Alternatives

EnergyElephant EnergyElephant The closest like for like substitute. Also utility bill and energy data led, and documents water, waste and structured Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon that EnergyCAP scope structure does not demonstrably cover. It is the only product here with a self service free limited version, so you can test it against your own invoices before committing. What does not carry over: no general ledger export, chargeback or bill approval workflow is documented, so a finance team relying on those will feel the loss.
MRI Energy MRI Software Same class, with far better documented data acquisition: oBIX, Modbus TCP over IP and OPC Historical Data Access are named, plus IoT and BMS connectivity. Adds tenant utility billing and explicit ISO 50001 and Greenhouse Gas Protocol reporting. What does not carry over: no general ledger export or campus chargeback equivalent is documented, and benchmarking could not be verified from published sources.
EcoStruxure Resource Advisor Schneider Electric The enterprise alternative. Covers utility bills, metering, water and gas, benchmarking, carbon reporting and anomaly detection, and uniquely supports energy procurement including monitoring requests for proposal. What does not carry over: it targets enterprise buyers only, is usually sold with Schneider advisory services rather than standalone, and publishes no pricing, documentation, integration catalogue or API statement.
Spacewell Energy Spacewell (Nemetschek Group) Strong on the monitoring and analytics side with 15 minute data, AI anomaly detection, a documented API and benchmarking against a database of more than 50,000 facilities. Published tiers state data point and admin user limits, so you can model cost drivers. What does not carry over: utility bill management is not advertised on the vendor energy page, so it is not a substitute if invoice volume is your core problem.
IBM Envizi ESG Suite IBM Worth considering only if the real driver is disclosure rather than invoice control. It publishes Utility Bill Analytics and Interval Meter Analytics modules alongside Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting, Scope 3 Financed Emissions and reporting frameworks. What does not carry over: it is an ESG suite, not a metering or bill accounting platform. No general ledger export, chargeback workflow or ENERGY STAR benchmarking support is documented, and no building protocol integration exists.

Frequently asked questions

No. EnergyCAP acquired Wattics in August 2022, and wattics.com now returns a permanent redirect to energycap.com. The analytics capability is part of EnergyCAP. The Wattics name is retained in this directory for search purposes only. Confirm with the vendor whether those analytics are included in a base subscription or licensed separately.

EnergyCAP names ENERGY STAR benchmarking alongside facility benchmarking as a feature. That is useful if a local ordinance requires you to benchmark in the free EPA tool. Confirm the exact submission mechanism with the vendor, since the readable pages describe benchmarking rather than automated submission.

No figure is published on the readable vendor pages, which link to a pricing section without showing amounts. The main site cannot be read by automated tools, so it cannot be confirmed whether a figure appears there. Expect a scoped quote.
