EnergyElephant
by EnergyElephant
Energy, water, waste and carbon management software with automated utility bill validation, a meter reading mobile app, Scope 1, 2 and 3 tracking and ISO 50001 targeting. Offers a free limited version.
What it is
EnergyElephant is one of the few products in this category that a smaller organisation can actually get started with unaided, and that is its central commercial distinction. The vendor states you can try a limited version of the software for free and get started in seconds with no hardware and no credit card required, plus a free demo dashboard. That is a materially different buying motion from the enterprise products here, almost all of which require a sales conversation before you can see anything. The no hardware point is also significant: the product works from utility bill data upward rather than requiring a metering installation first.
Functionally the scope is broader than energy alone. EnergyElephant covers energy, waste, water and carbon, with dedicated water and waste modules. Utility bill management is a core capability with automated bill validation and cost tracking, which is the engine of the product. Data can also come in live: there is a meter reading application for Android and iOS, which is a genuine native mobile capability rather than a responsive dashboard, and real time Internet of Things and smart meter data is supported. Carbon reporting covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 using methods including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and notably uses real time grid emission factors rather than static annual averages, which produces more accurate marginal emissions figures. There is an energy management system with ISO 50001 targeting, and executive level and shared dashboards.
The Scope 1, 2 and 3 coverage plus GHG Protocol methodology, offered alongside a free tier, makes EnergyElephant unusually strong value for its position in the market. Most products here either do bills and metering without credible carbon accounting, or do carbon accounting at enterprise prices. This does both.
What EnergyElephant is not. It is not a fault detection and diagnostics platform and makes no such claim: it will tell you a site is consuming more than target, not that a particular air handling unit damper has failed. It is not a building controls or demand management platform; it does not schedule or dispatch equipment. It is not a power quality monitoring tool. And despite the broad ESG coverage it is not an enterprise disclosure suite with financed emissions and supply chain modules in the IBM Envizi sense. Published gaps also matter: no benchmarking is described, no application programming interface is mentioned, and gas specific tooling is not called out separately even though energy is covered broadly. Pricing links to a Pricing Plans section but shows no figures, so despite the self service entry point the actual subscription cost still requires contact.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- A genuinely self service entry point. A free limited version with no hardware and no credit card required, which no enterprise competitor in this category offers. verified source
- Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon tracking using GHG Protocol methods and real time grid emission factors rather than static annual averages. verified source
- A native Android and iOS meter reading app, which makes the product workable for estates still taking manual meter reads. verified source
Limitations
- Visibility and reporting only. No fault detection, equipment control or demand management, so savings come from behaviour and targeting rather than automation. editorial
- No API and no benchmarking described, so corporate data integration and peer comparison are both open questions. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Small, Medium, Enterprise
EnergyElephant fits small and mid sized organisations with a compliance or reporting obligation and no dedicated energy team: SMEs facing supplier or lender ESG questionnaires, schools, charities, professional services firms, multi site retailers and anyone required to produce a credible Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory without hiring a consultant. The free limited version and no hardware requirement mean an organisation can prove value on its own bill data before committing budget, which no enterprise product in this category allows. It is also a reasonable fit for larger organisations that want bill driven carbon accounting quickly and can treat deeper metering as a later phase, and for ISO 50001 certifying organisations given the explicit targeting support.
The mobile meter reading app makes it workable for estates with manual meter reads, which is a common and badly served situation, and the water and waste modules suit organisations whose reporting obligation extends past energy.
It is a poor fit where the requirement is operational: no fault detection, no equipment control and no demand management means it will not reduce consumption through automation, only through visibility and targeting. It is a poor fit for portfolios needing peer benchmarking, which is not described. Organisations with heavy integration requirements should note that no application programming interface is mentioned and no building protocols are named, so pushing data into a corporate warehouse is an open question that must be settled before purchase. Buyers should also be clear that the free offering is a limited version for trial purposes and should establish the paid tier cost early, since no figures are published.
