Siemens Building X vs EcoStruxure Resource Advisor
Two building automation giants, two cloud energy platforms, and two very different ideas of what you are buying. Siemens sells Building X as a set of individually subscribable applications, of which Building X Energy Manager covers energy and emissions monitoring and portfolio benchmarking. Schneider sells EcoStruxure Resource Advisor as an enterprise data platform wrapped in advisory services.
Building X is the successor to Siemens Navigator, and that lineage deserves care. Navigator is no longer a purchasable option and should not be shortlisted. The evidence for the succession, however, is partly indirect: Siemens has published no end of life notice, no migration guide and names no successor, and no current Siemens product page for Navigator could be found, with one candidate URL returning HTTP 404. The statement that Navigator functions were absorbed into Energy Manager and Operations Manager comes from a third party tool directory rather than from Siemens. Existing Navigator customers therefore have no public clarity on support duration or data migration, which is a fair question to put to Siemens directly. Repeated renaming and restructuring of the Siemens building software portfolio has been publicly flagged as having confused existing customers, and that is a real adoption risk rather than a cosmetic one.
On documented capability, both cover energy metering, carbon reporting, benchmarking, dashboards and reporting. Building X adds a documented API and building system integration. Resource Advisor adds utility bill handling, water and gas, and anomaly detection. That split is the comparison in miniature: Building X is closer to the building, Resource Advisor is closer to the invoice and the enterprise reporting pack.

Full profileThe main differences
Where Building X is ahead
- Published APIs. Siemens documents open APIs at platform level for application data, building data management and user accounts. That is better than most competitors in this category publish, and it matters for anyone planning to put building data into their own warehouse.
- Modular commercial model. Siemens states you can subscribe to a single application and expand, rather than committing to a whole suite. For a buyer who wants to start with energy and nothing else, that is a materially lower entry point.
- Addressable market. Building X targets medium and enterprise buyers. Resource Advisor targets enterprise only.
Where Resource Advisor is ahead
- Utility bills. Documented bill validation plus interval data management, so it covers the commercial and the technical side of energy data in one platform. Utility bill handling could not be verified for Building X from published sources.
- Energy procurement. Resource Advisor supports procurement work including monitoring of requests for proposal, which reflects Schneider role as an energy supply advisor. Nothing else in this category offers it.
- Water and gas, and anomaly detection, both documented, both unverified for Building X.
The gap they share, and it is a big one
Neither vendor publishes a usable protocol list, which is remarkable for two building automation companies. The Building X product page says only that several standard protocols are supported and names none, so BACnet, Modbus and MQTT are omitted rather than guessed. Resource Advisor names no integration protocol at all, and Schneider has no single canonical global product page: regional variants sit at different paths with different content. For platforms whose value depends on reading third party building systems, that is a significant publishing gap on both sides and the first thing to pin down in writing.
Pricing
Neither publishes a figure. Siemens at least publishes the commercial model, stating you buy subscriptions to applications or to APIs, with no price, no tier list and no unit of measure. Schneider publishes nothing and offers a demo signup and a contact form. Resource Advisor is typically sold with Schneider advisory and bureau services rather than as a standalone subscription, which raises the effective entry cost.

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Choose Building X if your centre of gravity is operational, if you want a documented API and if you want to buy one application rather than a programme. The modular model is the strongest practical argument, particularly for a mid sized portfolio that cannot absorb an enterprise advisory engagement. Price in the portfolio churn risk: ask Siemens for a written roadmap and support commitment for the application you are buying, precisely because the Navigator transition was handled without a public end of life notice.
Choose Resource Advisor if your centre of gravity is enterprise reporting, invoice validation and energy procurement across a large portfolio, and if you actually want the advisory relationship rather than seeing it as a tax. The combination of bill validation, interval data and procurement support in one place is genuinely hard to assemble from other vendors. Accept very low published transparency: no pricing, no public documentation, no integration catalogue, no API statement, and everything established in a sales call.
If you already run Desigo or EcoStruxure building automation, incumbency is a legitimate tiebreaker, but make the vendor prove the integration rather than inferring it from a shared brand prefix. Background: energy management systems for buildings and BMS vs SCADA, when to use which.
Frequently asked questions
No. Navigator is no longer presented by Siemens as a current product and should not be shortlisted for a new purchase. Siemens published no end of life notice, no migration guide and names no successor, so the Building X succession rests on the absence of a vendor page plus a third party directory. Existing customers should ask Siemens directly about support and migration.
Resource Advisor documents utility bill handling alongside interval data management. For Building X, utility bill handling could not be verified from published sources, so confirm it with Siemens if invoices are central to your requirement.
Neither does usefully. The Building X page says several standard protocols are supported without naming any. Resource Advisor names none at all. Get a written protocol and compatibility list for your specific building systems before committing.
Siemens states you can subscribe to a single application and expand, so in principle yes, Energy Manager alone. No price, tier list or unit of measure is published, so the actual entry cost still requires a quote.
