What it is

WebCTRL is Automated Logic supervisory software, the operator and server head-end for a native BACnet controller estate. Automated Logic is a Carrier company, based in Kennesaw, Georgia. The current release is WebCTRL 10, announced by Automated Logic on 11 November 2025 alongside the platform twenty-fifth anniversary. The server software runs on major platforms including Windows and Linux, and the companion hardware line, OptiFlex controllers and field devices, is a separate product family under the same system brand. An add-on analytics product, Predictive Insights for WebCTRL, sits on top.

The deployment story is the clearest differentiator. The same platform is available on premises, where the buyer funds server hardware and software licences, or as WebCTRL Cloud, a vendor-hosted subscription that Automated Logic announced in January 2022 as building automation as a service. The hosted option runs on AWS and the subscription covers hosting, server maintenance, site-reliability monitoring, database redundancy and backups, and upgrades, which removes a meaningful operational burden for owners without a BMS-capable IT function.

Functionally the platform covers graphics, trending, alarms, scheduling, fault detection and diagnostics, live viewing of control logic, dashboards, and energy, ESG and greenhouse gas reporting built in rather than licensed as a separate analytics product. Standards depth is genuine: an ASHRAE Guideline 36 sequence library, a California Title 24 JA18 certified control library, chiller plant optimisation, and BACnet Secure Connect with TLS 1.3 which Automated Logic documents on a dedicated page. Integration beyond BACnet is handled through the OptiFlex Virtual Integrator and the published integration list: Modbus IP, SNMP, M-Bus, ASD, an MQTT Connector, trend export, Automated Demand Response, weather forecasting, door status integration and single sign-on with LDAP or Active Directory.

Two commercial details are unusually buyer-friendly for this market. The licensing model is described as simple with no limit on concurrent users, and Automated Logic states customer ownership of all engineering tools. In a category where integrators commonly retain the tools and therefore the practical ability to maintain the system, that materially reduces lock-in.

The honest limitations are protocol breadth and openness of information. The integration page lists BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, M-Bus, ASD and MQTT but not KNX, LonWorks or OPC UA, so WebCTRL is narrower than a Niagara-class integration layer and mixed estates may need gateways. There is no open documentation portal; only white papers, cut sheets and brochures are public, with full documentation apparently dealer gated. And for on-premises systems Automated Logic own guidance is to use a third-party VPN for remote access, which is candid but means remote access is not a solved problem in the product itself outside the cloud edition.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

NoteNo figures published. Automated Logic describes two cost models only: on premises as up-front server hardware plus software licences, and WebCTRL Cloud as a subscription with no up-front server or software cost. The company overview claims a simple licensing model with no limit on concurrent users. Pricing comes through the dealer or branch.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Dual deployment of the same platform: on premises, or vendor-hosted on AWS with hosting, server maintenance, site-reliability monitoring, database redundancy, backups and upgrades inside the subscription. verified source
  • Customer ownership of all engineering tools and unmetered concurrent users, both unusual in this market and directly relevant to integrator lock-in. verified source
  • Standards and compliance depth: BACnet Secure Connect with TLS 1.3, an ASHRAE Guideline 36 sequence library and a California Title 24 JA18 certified control library. verified source

Limitations

  • Protocol breadth is narrower than a Niagara-class integration layer: BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, M-Bus, ASD and MQTT are listed, but KNX, LonWorks and OPC UA are not. editorial
  • For on-premises systems Automated Logic own guidance is to use a third-party VPN for remote access, so secure remote access is not solved inside the product outside the cloud edition. verified source
  • No open documentation portal. Only white papers, cut sheets and brochures are public, with full documentation apparently dealer gated, and there is no published price or self-serve purchase. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

Who it fits. Single buildings through to multi-site portfolios where the controller estate is native BACnet, which is Automated Logic own description of the range: one building, a campus or a multi-site portfolio. The verticals it names are data centres, K-12 and higher education, healthcare, commercial offices and hospitality. Owners who want a BMS without running a server should look seriously at WebCTRL Cloud, since very few competitors offer a genuine vendor-hosted equivalent of their own head-end. Buyers worried about integrator lock-in should also weigh the stated customer ownership of engineering tools and unmetered concurrent users.

Who it does not fit. Estates built on KNX, LonWorks or OPC UA, which are absent from the published integration list. Buyers who need open documentation for evaluation will find the public material limited to brochures and cut sheets. There is no self-serve purchase and no published price: everything runs through the dealer and branch channel.

Typical use. Carrier and Automated Logic controller estates with a regional dealer or branch doing delivery and support, either with an on-premises server or on the hosted cloud subscription, using the Guideline 36 and Title 24 libraries to reduce custom sequence work.

Alternatives

Carrier i-Vu Carrier The nearest neighbour, and from the same corporate parent: both are BACnet supervisory software with a cloud SaaS option on AWS. i-Vu adds a cleaner edition ladder by controller count, a documented on-premises to cloud upgrade part number, an enterprise database tier supporting SQL Server, Oracle 19c, MySQL or PostgreSQL, and a 21 CFR Part 11 Life Sciences edition. WebCTRL keeps the advantage on engineering tool ownership, unmetered users, Modbus and MQTT.
Metasys Johnson Controls Choose it when the estate needs documented scale and wider documented protocols: ADX up to 1,000 network engines and 100 concurrent users, plus vendor application notes for Modbus, KNX, M-Bus and OPC UA client where the WebCTRL list omits KNX, LonWorks and OPC UA. It also has the open documentation portal WebCTRL lacks. Against it: concurrent-user licensing, pervasive add-ons, Windows and SQL Server dependency and no confirmable cloud edition.
enteliWEB Delta Controls A good match in class and philosophy, since both are BACnet-centric supervisory layers. enteliWEB is stronger on multi-site federation, needing only an IP address per site and able to sit above another vendor front end, and it adds Virtual Meters, enteliVAULT archiving and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 electronic signatures. It has no vendor-hosted SaaS, so cloud means self-hosting on Azure, EC2, VMware or Hyper-V, and hard per-edition I/O ceilings.
Desigo CC Siemens The step up when the brief widens past HVAC into fire safety, security, elevators and room booking on one head-end, or when you need a published two-way protocol matrix with KNX, OPC DA and UA and SNMPv3 that WebCTRL does not publish. Expect point-and-discipline licensing across around a hundred SKUs, edition-dependent protocol lists, and no vendor-hosted equivalent of WebCTRL Cloud operational package.
Trane Tracer SC+ with Tracer Synchrony Trane Technologies Only comparable where the scope is a single building or campus of HVAC plant, because Synchrony is the user interface of the Tracer SC+ controller rather than standalone software, and portfolio work requires Tracer Ensemble. Its advantage is protocol and legacy reach in one controller: BACnet IP, MS/TP and SC, LonTalk, Modbus TCP and RTU, Air-Fi wireless and legacy Comm 3 and Comm 4, plus a published 240-controller envelope.
