Trane Tracer SC+ with Tracer Synchrony
by Trane Technologies
Tracer Synchrony is the web user interface and supervisory software layer of the Trane Tracer SC+ system controller, not a standalone or multi-site product. Current catalogue revision K, March 2026.
What it is
Tracer Synchrony is current, but a scope correction is needed before comparing it with anything else in this category: it is not a standalone BMS product. Trane own current catalogue is titled Tracer SC+ System Controller with the Tracer Synchrony User Interface, and states that Tracer SC+ is accompanied by the Tracer Synchrony user interface. Trane describes Synchrony as building automation system software that enhances the Tracer SC+ platform. So Tracer SC+ is the controller and platform, Synchrony is its supervisory web interface, and Tracer Ensemble is the separate product for cross-building enterprise management. Attributing multi-site portfolio management to Synchrony would be wrong.
As a supervisory layer it is complete and well documented. The March 2026 catalogue covers alarms with receive, view, acknowledge and comment plus suppressed and unsuppressed tabs and email routing; data logging, which Trane also calls trending, with system-created logs at fifteen minute intervals and user-created interval, triggered or change-of-value logs; schedules built on BACnet schedule objects with calendars and exceptions; permanent and temporary overrides with an override report; site, VAS commissioning, points and chiller reports that can be scheduled and exported to CSV, HTML or PDF; graphics with a Tracer Graphics Editor, bindable widgets, 3D graphics and interactive floorplans; six predefined and customisable user roles; a Web Services page for outbound API connections; expansion module and USB port management; and backup and restore that can import older Tracer SC backups.
Trane publishes a hard scale envelope, which is rare transparency in this market. A Multi-Tracer SC+ facility supports a maximum of 240 controllers, with at most one Application SC+ plus optional Base SC+ units. Point limits are 15,000 per BACnet point type, 1,000 API points, 1,000 Modbus client points and 10,000 Modbus server points, where the first 500 Modbus server points are included in the core licence and further capacity comes in stackable 500-point licences. Protocol reach in one controller is unusually broad for an equipment manufacturer: BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP and BACnet Secure Connect each up to 240 devices, Modbus TCP up to 240 devices and Modbus RTU up to 90, LonTalk up to 240 devices using two USB LonTalk modules, Trane VRF over XML and IP, Air-Fi wireless which is BACnet over Zigbee and does not count against device limits, and legacy Trane Comm 3 and Comm 4 through communication bridges. Tracer SC+ is BTL listed as a BACnet Building Controller.
Pre-engineered applications reduce custom programming: Area, Trim and Respond setpoint reset following ASHRAE Guideline 36 sequences, Linear Reset, Chiller Plant Control, Variable Air Systems and Demand Management, with Tracer Graphical Programming available where custom or non-HVAC logic is needed. Security includes BACnet Secure Connect on both Ethernet ports, editable password strength criteria and role-based access.
Three constraints deserve prominence. First, default trend retention is only seven days on system-created logs, and the catalogue states plainly that data older than seven days is discarded to make room for newer data, so long-term history needs deliberately configured logs plus export, or Tracer Ensemble. Second, the documented API capability is outbound only: the Web Services page manages REST and JSON client connections where Tracer SC+ acts as a client fetching data from servers or devices, and no inbound API, single sign-on or SQL and BI integration appears in the catalogue. Third, several protocol integrations including LonTalk, Modbus RTU and TCP and VRF are marked Application SC+ only, so in a multi-controller facility they concentrate on one licensed controller, which is a real design constraint.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.
| Capability | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party system integration Integration with systems outside HVAC, such as fire, access control, CCTV or CMMS. | Yes | Open protocols enabling communication among Trane and non-Trane HVAC equipment and other facility systems; Tracer Communication Bridges convert legacy proprietary points into BACnet objects. source |
| Edge controller management Managing and programming edge or field controllers from the platform. | Yes | Tracer SC+ itself plus BACnet MS/TP and IP, Air-Fi wireless BACnet over Zigbee, LonTalk and legacy Comm 3 and Comm 4 unit controllers. source |
| Remote and browser access Browser or remote client access for operators. | Yes | Web enabled and accessible from virtually any device with a browser, plus a Tracer BAS Operator Suite mobile app, Trane Connect for remote access and cellular options where there is no internet. source |
| Cybersecurity features Documented security features such as encryption, authentication and hardening guidance. | Yes | BACnet Secure Connect on both Ethernet ports, editable password strength criteria and role-based access with six predefined roles. source |
| Historical data and archiving Long-term historical storage beyond short-term trend buffers. | Yes | Important constraint: default system-created logs retain only the most recent seven days, and the catalogue states older data is discarded to make room for newer data. source |
| Dashboards and graphics Operator graphics and configurable dashboards. | Yes | Home page system status, customisable navigation tree, graphical and bindable widgets, Tracer Graphics Editor, 3D graphics and interactive floorplans. source |
| Energy metering Metering and consumption measurement, including submetering. | Yes | Partial. Energy meters and variable frequency drives can feed the control algorithms and there is a Demand Management application, but there is no dedicated metering or billing module in Synchrony. Billing sits in Tracer Ensemble. source |
| Trending and logging Configurable trend logs for point data. | Yes | System-created logs at fifteen minute intervals plus user-created interval, triggered or change-of-value logs with compare and export. source |
| Alarm management Alarm generation, prioritisation, routing and acknowledgement. | Yes | Dedicated alarms page with acknowledge and comment, suppressed alarm tab and email routing. source |
| HVAC control Control sequences and scheduling for heating, ventilation and cooling plant. | Yes | Factory-engineered applications including Area, Trim and Respond per ASHRAE Guideline 36, Linear Reset, Chiller Plant Control, Variable Air Systems and Demand Management, plus Tracer Graphical Programming. source |
| Modbus support Modbus TCP or RTU communication. | Yes | Modbus TCP up to 240 devices and Modbus RTU up to 90, with client and server point classes licensed separately. Application SC+ only for RTU. source |
| BACnet support Native BACnet IP or MSTP communication with field devices. | Yes | Tracer SC+ natively communicates to BACnet and LonTalk controllers and is BTL listed as a BACnet Building Controller. BACnet/IP up to 240 devices, MS/TP up to 240, BACnet Secure Connect up to 240. source |
| Multi-building and enterprise scale Operating a portfolio of buildings from one platform. | Not verified | Qualified. A Multi-Tracer SC+ facility spans one or more SC+ controllers and a building or campus can contain more than one facility, but true cross-site enterprise management is the separate Tracer Ensemble product. |
| MQTT support MQTT publish or subscribe for telemetry and cloud integration. | Not verified | |
| OPC UA support OPC UA client or server for industrial interoperability. | Not verified | |
| KNX support KNX integration for building control devices. | Not verified |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- A documented, hard-numbered scale envelope: 240 controllers per facility, 15,000 points per BACnet point type and per-link device caps, published in the current catalogue. verified source
- Unusually broad legacy and protocol reach in one controller: BACnet IP, MS/TP and Secure Connect, LonTalk, Modbus TCP and RTU, Trane VRF over XML and IP, Air-Fi BACnet over Zigbee wireless, and legacy Comm 3 and Comm 4. verified source
- A pre-engineered application library including Chiller Plant Control, Variable Air Systems and Trim and Respond following ASHRAE Guideline 36, which reduces custom programming. verified source
Limitations
- Default trend retention is only seven days on system-created logs, with older data discarded, so long-term history requires configured logs and export or Tracer Ensemble. verified source
- Synchrony is not a standalone or multi-site product: it is the user interface of the SC+ controller, and cross-building management, analytics and billing require Tracer Ensemble. verified source
- Documented API capability is outbound and client-side only, with Tracer SC+ fetching from external services. No inbound REST API, single sign-on or SQL and BI integration appears in the catalogue. verified source
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise
Who it fits. Buildings and campuses where Trane chillers and air handling dominate, which is where the pre-engineered chiller plant and variable air system applications pay for themselves. It also fits brownfield Trane sites, because the BAS Renewal programme exists to migrate customers off legacy Tracer Summit and Tracer SC onto the current platform, and Synchrony can restore older Tracer SC backups. Sites with mixed legacy equipment benefit from the unusual protocol spread in one controller, covering BACnet, LonTalk, Modbus and legacy Trane buses.
Who it does not fit. Multi-site portfolio management, which requires Tracer Ensemble rather than Synchrony. Owners needing long-term trend history natively, given the seven day default retention. Owners who need an inbound API, single sign-on or a BI and CMMS integration path, none of which is documented. And buyers who want competitive bidding on the head-end, since Trane delivers through its own direct sales and service offices rather than an open integrator market, which gives strong accountability but limits price tension.
Typical use. A single building or campus facility of up to 240 controllers, operated from the on-controller Synchrony interface with no dedicated operator PC, plus Trane Connect for remote access and a cellular router where the site has no internet.

Frequently asked questions
No. Trane own catalogue is titled Tracer SC+ System Controller with the Tracer Synchrony User Interface, and describes Synchrony as the user interface accompanying Tracer SC+. Buy the controller, get the interface.
Not as cross-site enterprise management. A Multi-Tracer SC+ facility can span several SC+ controllers in a building or campus, but monitoring and managing multiple buildings and locations centrally is the separate Tracer Ensemble product.
System-created logs keep only the most recent seven days by default, and Trane states older data is discarded to make room for newer data. Longer retention needs deliberately configured logs with export, or Tracer Ensemble.
