Trane Tracer Synchrony versus Carrier i-Vu
Two HVAC-manufacturer platforms that look like direct rivals and are not quite the same class of thing. Tracer Synchrony is the web user interface and supervisory software layer of the Trane Tracer SC+ system controller, not a standalone or multi-site product; the current catalogue revision is K, dated March 2026. Carrier i-Vu is web-based BACnet supervisory software in its own right, current at i-Vu Pro 10, with editions sold by controller count, an i-Vu Cloud SaaS option on AWS, an Express appliance and an i-Vu for Life Sciences variant.
That classification difference is the most important fact on this page. On Trane, cross-building management, analytics and billing require Tracer Ensemble, a separate product, and Trane Connect Remote Access is the separate remote and cloud layer. On Carrier, the software is the product and scales by edition from five controllers to unlimited, with a documented on-premises to cloud upgrade part number. Both are unusually well documented for this category, which makes the comparison one of the more evenly evidenced in the directory.

Full profileThe main differences
Protocol reach
Trane is clearly broader here, and unusually broad in one controller: BACnet IP, MS/TP and Secure Connect with BTL listing as a BACnet Building Controller, LonTalk, Modbus TCP up to 240 devices and Modbus RTU up to 90 with client and server point classes licensed separately, Trane VRF over XML and IP, Air-Fi wireless BACnet over Zigbee, and legacy Comm 3 and Comm 4. Carrier publishes only BACnet, at BACnet Revision 19 as a BACnet Advanced Operator Workstation with Secure Connect and smarter discovery, plus backward compatibility with legacy CCN and Open controllers. Modbus, LonWorks, KNX, OPC UA and MQTT are not mentioned on the i-Vu product page or the version 10 specification sheet, so they are unverified rather than absent, but a mixed-protocol estate should expect gateways. KNX, OPC UA and MQTT are likewise not addressed in the Trane catalogue. See BACnet vs Modbus.
Scale and history retention
- Trane publishes a hard scale envelope: 240 controllers per facility, 15,000 points per BACnet point type, and per-link device caps. Multi-building is qualified, since a Multi-Tracer SC+ facility spans one or more SC+ controllers and a campus can contain more than one, but portfolio management belongs to Tracer Ensemble.
- Carrier scales by edition, CIV-OPNPR5 through CIV-OPNPRUL, up to unlimited controllers, but no multi-building or portfolio feature is stated, so that is unverified too.
- History is a real differentiator. Trane default system-created logs retain only the most recent seven days and the catalogue states older data is discarded, so long-term history requires configured logs and export, or Tracer Ensemble. Carrier ships a pluggable enterprise data tier instead: Apache Derby by default with SQL Server 2016 to 2022, SQL Server Express, Oracle 19c, MySQL to 8.0 LTS and PostgreSQL supported, which is rare in a BMS head-end and valuable for reporting.
Integration direction and add-ons
Trane documented API capability is outbound and client-side only, with Tracer SC+ fetching from external services; no inbound REST API, single sign-on or SQL and BI integration appears in the catalogue. Carrier is the better fit for downstream reporting because of the database tier, and LDAP with single sign-on exists as an add-on part number bundled into the Life Sciences edition, though whether SAML specifically is supported was not confirmed. Carrier add-on list is the longer one: LDAP and single sign-on, trend export, ACxelerate commissioning and the Predictive Insights subscription are all separately priced, and live or scheduled full and partial system backups, a version 10 headline feature, are flagged on-premises only, so the cloud edition does not get them. Trane licensing splits an Application SC+ from a Base SC+ and sells Modbus server points in stackable 500-point licences.
Control content and compliance
Trane brings a pre-engineered application library that reduces custom programming: Area, Trim and Respond per ASHRAE Guideline 36, Linear Reset and Chiller Plant Control, plus a Tracer Graphics Editor and 3D graphics. Carrier brings pre-engineered control programs, the ACxelerate auto-commissioning add-on, and a regulated-environment answer Trane does not match on published material: an i-Vu for Life Sciences variant compliant with 21 CFR Part 11 with digitally signed reports, on a TLS 1.3 and 256-bit encryption baseline with BACnet Secure Connect, access controls and intrusion detection.

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Pick Tracer SC+ with Synchrony when the job is one building or one campus of mixed and partly legacy HVAC plant, and the value is in reaching all of it from one controller. The protocol list is the broadest in this pairing, the scale envelope is published in hard numbers, and the Guideline 36 application library is real engineering content. Design around two constraints from day one: the seven-day default trend retention, and the fact that Synchrony is a controller user interface, so anything portfolio-level means Tracer Ensemble.
Pick i-Vu when you want supervisory software that is a product in its own right: a clean controller-count edition ladder, a vendor-hosted cloud SaaS option with a documented upgrade part number, an enterprise database behind the BMS for reporting, and a 21 CFR Part 11 compliant edition for life sciences. Accept a BACnet-only published protocol story and budget for the add-ons, including single sign-on and trend export, and note that the cloud edition does not get the new backup feature.
Neither vendor publishes pricing. Both are specified and commissioned through the manufacturer and its dealers, and the software licence is a line in a project cost dominated by controllers, field devices and engineering.
Frequently asked questions
No. The catalogue states Synchrony is the user interface of the Tracer SC+ controller, and that cross-building management, analytics and billing require Tracer Ensemble. Trane Connect Remote Access is the separate remote and cloud layer.
Default system-created logs retain only the most recent seven days and the catalogue states older data is discarded. Long-term history needs user-configured logs plus export, or Tracer Ensemble. Carrier instead supports SQL Server, Oracle 19c, MySQL or PostgreSQL behind the platform.
Could not be verified. Modbus is not mentioned on the i-Vu product page or the i-Vu Pro 10 specification sheet, nor are LonWorks, KNX, OPC UA or MQTT. Only BACnet is named, so treat non-BACnet integration as needing confirmation and probably gateways.
Carrier, on published evidence: there is an i-Vu for Life Sciences variant described as 21 CFR Part 11 compliant with digitally signed reports, bundling the LDAP and single sign-on option. The Trane catalogue documents role-based access with six predefined roles and editable password strength criteria, but no equivalent regulated variant.
