Automated Logic WebCTRL versus Johnson Controls Metasys

Both of these are BACnet-centric platforms sold with their own controller families, and both are mainstream shortlist entries for commercial estates. WebCTRL is the Automated Logic supervisory head-end for native BACnet controller estates, available on premises or as WebCTRL Cloud, a vendor-hosted subscription running on AWS; Automated Logic is a Carrier company. Metasys is a building automation suite built from tiered server software, ADS, ADX and OAS, over NAE, SNE and SNC network engines, with Release 14.0 current and its documentation fully public.

The split is deployment model against documentation depth. WebCTRL is the only platform in this pairing with a confirmed vendor-hosted cloud edition, where hosting, server maintenance, site-reliability monitoring, database redundancy, backups and upgrades sit inside the subscription. Metasys has no cloud-hosted offering that could be confirmed, but it publishes versioned technical documentation with real capacities and licence tiers, which WebCTRL does not: Automated Logic has no open documentation portal and full documentation appears dealer gated.

The main differences

Protocols

Metasys has the broader documented surface. BACnet/IP and BACnet/SC with MS/TP via router and OAS direct device management up to 200 devices, LonWorks, plus named vendor application notes for Modbus, KNX, M-Bus and OPC UA client. MQTT is not named in any Johnson Controls document opened, so unverified. WebCTRL confirms native BACnet controllers with BACnet Secure Connect over TLS 1.3, Modbus IP through the OptiFlex Virtual Integrator, SNMP, M-Bus and an MQTT Connector, so WebCTRL is the one with confirmed MQTT here. KNX, LonWorks and OPC UA are not on the published WebCTRL integration list. Net effect: Metasys for KNX, LonWorks and OPC UA client work; WebCTRL for MQTT and cloud-forward data flows. Protocol claims on either should be proven on site, see BACnet integration acceptance tests.

Commercial terms that actually differ

  • WebCTRL: customer ownership of all engineering tools and unmetered concurrent users. Both are unusual in this market and both cut directly against integrator lock-in.
  • Metasys: server tier is chosen by concurrent-user count against published SKUs, so users are a priced dimension, and add-on licensing is pervasive, covering historical archival, five years of UI history, FIPS 140-2 Level 1, ADFS two-factor authentication, BACnet/SC, Fault Detection and Triage and MVE.
  • Metasys publishes capacity: ADX up to 1,000 network engines and 100 concurrent users, ADS up to 14 engines. WebCTRL publishes no capacity figures and no version number could be confirmed.
  • Neither publishes a price. Automated Logic describes two cost models only, up-front licences on premises or a subscription in the cloud, with no figures.

Control content and compliance

WebCTRL brings pre-engineered control depth that Metasys documentation does not match on the pages read: an ASHRAE Guideline 36 sequence library, a California Title 24 JA18 certified control library and chiller plant optimisation, plus real-time energy displays with built-in energy, ESG and greenhouse gas reporting. Metasys brings Fault Detection and Triage as a licensed server feature, long-term trend storage, and a RESTful Metasys API plus a Monitoring and Commanding API for bidirectional integration, with the important caveat that the API is available only on non-MVE sites.

Remote access and IT footprint

For on-premises WebCTRL, Automated Logic own guidance is to use a third-party VPN for remote access, so secure remote access is not solved inside the product outside the cloud edition. Metasys exposes the Metasys UI browser client on every server tier plus Remote Notifications, but carries a hard Windows and SQL Server dependency across all tiers, which is licence cost, patching burden and an IT ownership question before any BMS value appears.

Which to choose

Pick WebCTRL if you want the operational burden off your own estate or you want to own your engineering tools. The cloud edition rolls hosting, redundancy, backups and upgrades into the subscription, the sequence libraries reduce custom programming, and unmetered concurrent users plus customer-owned tooling make it the less captive relationship of the two. Price in a VPN if you stay on premises.

Pick Metasys if the estate is large and multi-site and you need to size and licence against published engine and user ceilings, or if you need KNX, LonWorks or OPC UA client integration documented by the vendor. Then model the add-ons honestly, and settle the MVE versus REST API fork during design rather than afterwards.

Both are integrator-delivered and quote only. WebCTRL is the thinner of the two on public evidence, with no open documentation portal and no confirmable version number, so put the integration list and the capacity envelope in writing.

Frequently asked questions

WebCTRL. WebCTRL Cloud is a vendor-hosted subscription on AWS with hosting, server maintenance, site-reliability monitoring, database redundancy, backups and upgrades included. No Metasys cloud-hosted offering could be confirmed.

Neither is on the published WebCTRL integration list, so support could not be verified from published sources. The listed protocols are BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, M-Bus, ASD and MQTT.

No vendor publishes a figure, so this cannot be answered with numbers. Structurally, WebCTRL unmetered concurrent users and customer-owned engineering tools remove two cost dimensions, while Metasys prices by concurrent user and licenses archival, security features and fault detection separately, on top of Windows and SQL Server.

Metasys, by a wide margin. Its documentation portal is open and versioned. Automated Logic publishes only white papers, cut sheets and brochures, with full documentation apparently dealer gated, and no current WebCTRL version number could be confirmed.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.

Disclosure

Alongside advisory work I also build a CMMS and CAFM platform, so I have a commercial interest in enterprise software generally. No vendor here has paid for inclusion, placement or wording, and there are no reseller or affiliate arrangements.

Deciding between these?

Independent help scoring them against your actual requirement rather than a feature list, and designing the integration work that follows. No reseller arrangements.
