Alerton Compass 2
by Honeywell (Alerton) Discontinued
Operator workstation software for Alerton BACtalk and Ascent estates. Honeywell own US and UK pages state the product has been discontinued, with no successor named, so it should be treated as a legacy platform.
What it is
Compass 2 is the operator workstation software for Alerton BACtalk and Ascent building automation estates, sold under Honeywell. Alerton is a Honeywell product brand and no evidence was found of the brand being divested or renamed. It is genuinely software rather than a controller: the Alerton controller line, including the Ascent Control Module and its option cards and the BACtalk controllers, is separate hardware, and VisualLogic, the programming tool, is bundled as a tool inside Compass.
The decisive fact is lifecycle. Honeywell own US page for Compass 2 Software, and both the US and UK Compass Softwares pages, state that this product has been discontinued and that Honeywell will provide product support until a stated date. That date did not render in the fetched page text, so no end-of-support date is published here, and no successor product is named anywhere on Honeywell pages that were opened. Associated Honeywell Compass Operator training is also marked discontinued. The brief for this directory is explicit that a retired product must not be presented as a current purchasing option, so Compass is recorded here for search and migration value: it is a maintenance platform, not a new-build choice.
What it does, on the capability it was built for, is solid operator work for BACnet estates. The web user interface supports multiple concurrent web users each in their own language and number format, with LDAP authentication. Graphics include an isometric graphics library and, usefully for legacy sites, HTML5 conversion of legacy Alerton bitmap graphics. Operations features include an interactive alarm table with sorting, filtering, categorising and commenting, trend logs viewable as graphs or text with multiple points per log, interactive data tables that allow bulk editing of many point values in one operation, and a configurable navigation tree.
Demand management is the area where Compass is more capable than its market position suggests. It shows hourly or daily energy use and demand in text form, and provides flexible demand metering across media with priority-based load shedding and restoration of binary and analogue loads with real-time results, alongside time-of-day and seasonal strategies, optimum start, zones and EASE scheduling. VisualLogic covers control programming.
The information gaps are significant and should be stated plainly. Honeywell publishes no open datasheet, no SKU list and no price for Compass; the documents tab on both pages prompts a sign-in, and a SKUs tab did not render. On protocol breadth, nothing beyond BACnet is named on Honeywell own pages. A distributor listing claims Modbus, SNMP and KNX drivers and tiered device-count licensing in small, medium, large and extra-large variants, but none of that appears on a Honeywell page that was opened, so it is not recorded as fact. No cloud deployment option is described, and no third-party integration claim beyond BACnet could be verified.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.
| Capability | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Remote and browser access Browser or remote client access for operators. | Yes | Web user interface supporting multiple web users in their own languages and number formats. source |
| Historical data and archiving Long-term historical storage beyond short-term trend buffers. | Yes | Trend logs. No separate archive or historian feature is described. source |
| Energy metering Metering and consumption measurement, including submetering. | Yes | Hourly or daily energy use and demand in text form, plus flexible demand metering across media with priority-based load shed and restore. source |
| Trending and logging Configurable trend logs for point data. | Yes | Trend logs viewable as graphs or text, with multiple points per log. source |
| Alarm management Alarm generation, prioritisation, routing and acknowledgement. | Yes | Interactive alarm table with sorting, filtering, categorising and commenting. source |
| HVAC control Control sequences and scheduling for heating, ventilation and cooling plant. | Yes | Optimum start, zones, time-of-day and seasonal strategies, EASE scheduling and VisualLogic programming. source |
| BACnet support Native BACnet IP or MSTP communication with field devices. | Yes | Honeywell states BACnet data reaches the web UI faster than in earlier versions; BACtalk is a BACnet system. source |
| Third-party system integration Integration with systems outside HVAC, such as fire, access control, CCTV or CMMS. | Not verified | No third-party integration claim beyond BACnet appears on Honeywell own pages. |
| Multi-building and enterprise scale Operating a portfolio of buildings from one platform. | Not verified | Wide-area BACnet/IP networking is attributed to Compass in search summaries but was not read on an opened Honeywell page. |
| Edge controller management Managing and programming edge or field controllers from the platform. | Not verified | |
| Cybersecurity features Documented security features such as encryption, authentication and hardening guidance. | Not verified | LDAP user authentication is the only security feature named. No encryption or BACnet Secure Connect statement was found. |
| Dashboards and graphics Operator graphics and configurable dashboards. | Not verified | Graphics and summary displays are described, including an isometric graphics library, but no dashboard product is named. |
| MQTT support MQTT publish or subscribe for telemetry and cloud integration. | Not verified | |
| OPC UA support OPC UA client or server for industrial interoperability. | Not verified | |
| KNX support KNX integration for building control devices. | Not verified | |
| Modbus support Modbus TCP or RTU communication. | Not verified | No field protocol other than BACnet is named on Honeywell own pages. A distributor listing claims Modbus, but that was not verified on a vendor page. |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Purpose-built migration target for legacy Alerton estates: it replaces Alerton Building Suite and Envision for BACtalk and converts legacy Alerton bitmap graphics to HTML5. verified source
- Real depth in demand management: flexible demand metering across media with priority-based load shedding and restoration of binary and analogue loads with real-time results, plus optimum start and seasonal strategies. verified source
- Practical multi-user operator features: interactive alarm table with sorting and commenting, interactive data tables allowing bulk editing of many point values at once, configurable navigation tree and per-user language and number formats. verified source
Limitations
- Discontinued on Honeywell own US and UK pages, with no successor named and no readable end-of-support date. It should be treated as a legacy and maintenance platform rather than a new-build choice. verified source
- Honeywell publishes no open datasheet, SKU list or price, and documents require sign-in, so protocol and scale claims cannot be independently verified. editorial
- Protocol breadth is undocumented beyond BACnet on Honeywell own pages, and no cloud deployment option is described. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Small, Medium
Who it fits. Existing Alerton BACtalk and Ascent sites that need an operator front end today and a migration plan tomorrow. If you are coming off Alerton Building Suite or Envision for BACtalk, Compass is the purpose-built target: it converts legacy Alerton bitmap graphics to HTML5 and preserves the BACtalk estate. Sites with active demand-management requirements also get real value from the priority-based load shed and restore features.
Who it does not fit. Any new project. It is marked discontinued on Honeywell own pages with no successor identified, no readable end-of-support date, no public documentation and no published price, which makes it impossible to recommend as a purchase. Mixed-protocol estates should also look elsewhere, since nothing beyond BACnet is documented by Honeywell, and anyone needing cloud or portfolio-scale management will not find it described.
Typical use. Legacy Alerton estate operation and maintenance through Alerton and Honeywell authorised dealers, with VisualLogic for programming, pending a documented migration path that Honeywell has not published.

Frequently asked questions
Honeywell own US and UK pages state that the product has been discontinued and that support continues until a stated date, although that date did not render in the page text. No successor is named and no Compass 3 was found. Some regional pages still list ordering part numbers without a discontinued banner, so confirm the position with Honeywell before relying on either message.
Alerton Building Suite and Envision for BACtalk. Compass shipped first as Ascent Compass 1 and then Compass 2, and it converts legacy Alerton bitmap graphics to HTML5 to ease that migration.
