Gusto versus Rippling: one publishes a price and one does not, and only one of those is the vendor fault

Gusto and Rippling compete hard for the US small business payroll and HR buyer, and they are the pair most likely to be compared on price in a search result. This page cannot do that, and the reason needs stating up front. Gusto does publish per person per month pricing, but its pricing page returned HTTP 403 Forbidden to automated access and no User-Agent was spoofed, so no Gusto figure is recorded here. Figures circulating from Gusto own blog and guide pages were deliberately not used: they are secondary vendor content rather than the pricing page, they print a bare dollar sign with no ISO code, and Gusto own guides disagree with each other about whether the top tier is a fixed price or custom. So nothing on this page should be read as a Gusto price, and any Gusto figure you see quoted elsewhere was not verified against the pricing page.

Rippling does publish a figure. Plans start at 8 per employee per month plus a monthly base fee. The page prints a bare dollar sign with no ISO code, so USD is inferred from Rippling being a US headquartered vendor and is not vendor stated. Pricing is modular per product, so the real cost depends on which modules are bought and is not published, which makes the entry figure a floor rather than a budget.

The main differences

What each one is verifiably good at

Gusto readable evidence comes largely from docs.gusto.com, which is open where the marketing pages are not. Payroll is verified there: payroll creation, calculation and submission, pay stubs, pay schedules and tax liabilities. It is United States shaped throughout, via W-2 and 1099 constructs, which tells you more about market fit than any marketing page would. Time off policies, balances, requests and holiday pay are documented, as are employee and contractor onboarding and benefits including health insurance and workers compensation. That is a coherent US small business payroll and benefits product.

Rippling is the broader platform on verified evidence: time and attendance plus scheduling, recruiting, performance and more, all stated on its own product pages. Its modular structure is the defining commercial fact, since you assemble the product you want and the price follows the assembly.

Free offers, and what they actually are

Neither has a verified free version. For Rippling, a six month free offer for eligible US venture backed startups exists and is a programme, not a free tier, and no trial is listed, only a demo request. For Gusto, a free until your first payroll offer and a claim that there is no free plan both appear in unverified snippets, so the free version and trial status are both recorded as unknown rather than guessed either way.

Neither is a Gulf product, and here is what does not carry over

Neither Gusto nor Rippling could be verified for UAE payroll. No readable Gusto page names UAE payroll or WPS; snippet level material suggests the UAE appears only as a destination for paying non US contractors in dirhams, which is contractor payment rather than payroll and is not WPS compliance. The relevant Gusto pages returned HTTP 403. Rippling does not name the UAE, the GCC or the Gulf anywhere on its homepage or global payroll page and never mentions WPS; the countries it does name are Canada, the UK, Australia, India, France, Germany, Brazil, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

For a Gulf reader the specific warning is this: the thing that makes a US payroll product feel complete is the compliance layer, and none of it transfers. There is no WPS salary information file, no MOHRE reporting, no GPSSA contribution handling and no UAE end of service gratuity calculation in either product. A global payroll claim that does not name the United Arab Emirates is not evidence for the United Arab Emirates.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Strengths and limitations

Drawn from each product's own profile, where every item is labelled a verified fact or an editorial judgement.

Which to choose

For a US company under a few hundred people whose main problem is running payroll correctly and administering benefits, Gusto is the narrower and more focused product, and its API documentation is open enough to evaluate the payroll model properly even though the marketing site is not. Get the current pricing from the pricing page in a browser rather than from a secondary page, because Gusto own guides disagree with each other about the top tier.

For a US company that wants HR, IT and payroll on one record and is willing to buy modules, Rippling is the broader platform and is the one you can at least begin to budget from a published starting figure, remembering the monthly base fee and that every module adds cost that is not published.

For a UAE or Gulf buyer, neither is a payroll answer. If either is wanted for its HR record while Gulf payroll runs elsewhere, that is a workable architecture and the handoff into finance is worth designing early: see payroll to ERP integration. The products in this category with published UAE WPS evidence are Oracle Fusion Cloud HCM, Ramco Payce, Darwinbox and the Zoho Payroll UAE edition, and that list is short for a reason.

Frequently asked questions

No figure is published on this page and none should be inferred from it. Gusto does publish per person per month pricing, but the pricing page returned HTTP 403 Forbidden to automated access and no User-Agent was spoofed. Figures from Gusto own blog and guide pages were deliberately not used, because they are secondary content, they print a bare dollar sign with no ISO code, and Gusto own guides disagree about whether the top tier is fixed price or custom. Rippling states that plans start at 8 per employee per month plus a monthly base fee. The page prints a bare dollar sign with no ISO code, so USD is inferred from Rippling being US headquartered rather than vendor stated. Pricing is modular per product, so the entry figure is a floor and the real cost depends on which modules are bought, which is not published.

Neither has a verified free version. The Rippling six month free offer for eligible US venture backed startups is a programme rather than a free tier, and no Rippling trial is listed, only a demo request. For Gusto both a free until your first payroll offer and a no free plan claim appear in unverified snippets, so the status is recorded as unknown.

Not on published evidence. Gusto has no readable page naming UAE payroll or WPS, and the UAE appears only as a destination for paying non US contractors in dirhams, which is contractor payment rather than payroll. Rippling names no Gulf country anywhere and never mentions WPS. No WPS salary information file, MOHRE reporting, GPSSA handling or end of service gratuity calculation transfers from a US payroll product.
