SAP Asset Performance Management

by SAP

Cloud asset performance management product from SAP that runs an RCM process based on SAE JA1012 and standard FMEA to analyse failure modes, with failure data synchronised from SAP ERP. Pricing and much documentation are behind a 403 block.

What it is

Verified: this is a current, separately named SAP product. SAP Asset Performance Management, commonly shortened to SAP APM, has its own product and features pages on sap.com and its own documentation space on the SAP Help Portal. It is distinct from SAP EAM and from the older SAP Predictive Asset Insights and SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management naming, although all three names still appear in circulation and some third-party review sites still index the product under the older Asset Strategy and Performance Management label. Treat SAP Asset Performance Management as the current name.

Access block, stated plainly: sap.com returns HTTP 403 to automated access, and the SAP Help Portal renders its documentation through a client-side application that returns no readable content to a fetch. The SAP Community blog platform also returned 403. No workaround was used. What is recorded below therefore rests on indexed quotations of SAP’s own features page and SAP-authored community material rather than on pages read end to end, and the capability set should be considered partially verified. That is a limitation of this profile, not of the product.

What is reliably established is that SAP APM is method-led rather than black-box AI, which distinguishes it from most of this category. SAP states that it follows a seven-step reliability-centred maintenance process based on SAE JA1012, and that it applies the standard FMEA process to analyse failure modes. SAP-authored material further describes building a failure data hierarchy for each RCM assessment, assigning failure mechanisms, causes and effects to each failure mode, with the failure data profile synchronised from SAP ERP, and notes that only functions and functional failures are created and maintained inside APM itself. Naming a published standard is a far stronger claim than naming an algorithm nobody can inspect.

Sensor requirement: SAP does not sell sensors and does not require its own hardware. APM is cloud-native on SAP Business Technology Platform and is designed to sit against SAP S/4HANA, drawing failure data and technical object master data from the ERP. The indicator and machine-learning side of the lineage, from SAP Predictive Asset Insights, maps failure modes to indicators fed from IoT sources. Because the detailed statements about machine learning come from older SAP material under the Predictive Asset Insights name rather than from the current APM features page, failure prediction and anomaly detection are recorded here as unknown for the current product.

One concrete caveat from an SAP implementation partner is worth carrying: there is an embedded variant with reduced functionality where planning and machine learning functions are not available. If a quote references an embedded deployment, establish which capabilities are in scope.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

CapabilityStatusNotes
FMEA support Failure mode and effects analysis within the product. Yes SAP states the product applies the standard FMEA process to analyse failure modes, with failure mechanisms, causes and effects assignable per failure mode. source
Reliability-centred maintenance Structured RCM analysis and strategy development. Yes SAP states APM follows a seven-step reliability-centred maintenance process based on SAE JA1012. Verified from indexed quotation of the SAP features page; sap.com returns 403 to direct automated access. source
Reliability modelling Reliability and availability modelling of assets or systems. Yes Named RCM and FMEA methods with a failure data hierarchy constitute reliability modelling. No proprietary method claimed. source
Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. Not verified SAP publishes APIs across its cloud portfolio but no APM-specific API documentation could be read because of the access blocks.
Reporting and dashboards Reliability and condition reporting and dashboards. Not verified
Work order and CMMS integration Creating or updating maintenance work from APM output. Not verified Failure data profiles are described as synchronised from SAP ERP, but bidirectional work order creation was not confirmed.
SCADA and historian integration Reading from process historians, SCADA or control systems. Not verified
Sensor connectivity Connecting to sensors, whether the vendor supplies them or not. Not verified
Digital twin A simulation or model-based twin of physical assets. Not verified Not confirmed from any readable SAP source.
Root cause analysis Structured root cause analysis of failures. Not verified
Asset health scoring Composite asset health or condition indices. Not verified Asset health prediction is described in older SAP Predictive Asset Insights material rather than on the current APM features page. Not confirmed for the current product.
Failure prediction Predicting failure or remaining useful life. Recorded only where a source describes it, not from AI claims. Not verified Machine learning statements come from older SAP Predictive Asset Insights material, and a partner reports the embedded variant omits machine learning entirely. No mechanism confirmed for current APM, so unknown.
Anomaly detection Detecting deviation from normal behaviour. Recorded only where a source describes the mechanism. Not verified No mechanism described on any current SAP page that could be read.
Vibration analysis Vibration measurement and spectral analysis. Not verified
Condition monitoring Monitoring asset condition from sensor or process data. Not verified

NoteNo figure could be verified. sap.com returns HTTP 403 to automated access, so any SAP price list or estimator page could not be opened, and no workaround was used. SAP cloud products are typically sold on negotiated subscription through SAP or a partner. Recorded as not public rather than guessed. Do not trust third-party aggregator pricing for this product.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Names a published standard rather than a proprietary algorithm: SAP states the RCM process follows SAE JA1012 and that standard FMEA is applied to analyse failure modes. verified source
  • Failure data is not re-keyed. SAP-authored material describes the failure data profile synchronising from SAP ERP, with only functions and functional failures maintained inside APM. verified source

Limitations

  • Effectively SAP-only. The design assumes S/4HANA and SAP Plant Maintenance as the system of record, so there is little reason to buy it against a third-party EAM. editorial
  • Poor public verifiability. sap.com returns 403, the Help Portal serves no readable content to a fetch, and the SAP Community platform returns 403, so a buyer cannot do independent desk research on this product. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Enterprise

Fits: existing SAP customers, and realistically only those. The whole value proposition depends on S/4HANA and SAP Plant Maintenance being the system of record, because failure data profiles synchronise from SAP ERP and the technical object hierarchy comes from there. Large asset-intensive SAP shops in utilities, oil and gas, chemicals, mining, rail and discrete manufacturing are the target, particularly those that want RCM and FMEA governed centrally with an audit trail and the resulting strategy written back into the maintenance plans their planners already use.

Does not fit: anyone not running SAP. There is no credible reason to buy SAP APM as a standalone reliability tool against a third-party EAM. It is also a poor fit for a team wanting fast predictive wins from sensor data, because what is actually well evidenced here is the reliability method, not the machine learning, and the embedded variant reportedly omits machine learning entirely. Small and mid-sized organisations are out of scope on both cost and the SAP skills required: user reviews consistently flag a steep learning curve and substantial SAP expertise as prerequisites.

Typical use cases: running governed RCM assessments to SAE JA1012 across a large technical object hierarchy; standard FMEA with failure mechanisms, causes and effects held against each failure mode; converting assessment outcomes into maintenance strategy inside the SAP maintenance process; consolidating asset health reporting for an SAP-standardised estate.

Buyer caution: establish in writing whether you are being sold the full cloud product or the embedded variant, and get the machine-learning scope confirmed, because SAP’s public material on that aspect largely predates the current product name. Expect implementation partner involvement.

Alternatives

IBM Maximo Application Suite IBM The direct equivalent on a different system of record. IBM Maximo Asset Performance Management names Condition Insight, RCM Strategy Builder with AI-assisted FMEA, Alert Insights, condition-based health scoring and predictive maintenance on historical health data. If you are not an SAP shop this is the comparison that matters, because SAP APM assumes S/4HANA and SAP Plant Maintenance own the technical object hierarchy and has little purpose against a third-party EAM.
AssetWise Reliability Bentley Systems The strongest standalone reliability-method product, and EAM-neutral, which SAP APM is not. Bentley names RCM2, FMEA, RBI, SIF, MTA and CPR, and publishes hosting, SQL Server and authentication detail. The cost of leaving SAP is integration: Bentley names no ERP, EAM, CMMS or historian integration at all, so the failure data synchronisation you would have got free from SAP ERP becomes a project you scope and pay for.
Honeywell Forge Asset Performance Management Honeywell The right swap if what you need is detection rather than governed method. Honeywell is verified for failure prediction with a described hybrid mechanism and named failure modes, is explicitly vendor-agnostic, runs on-premises or cloud and names a CMMS work order integration module. What does not carry over is the reliability governance: Honeywell never names FMEA or RCM as supported methods, so the SAE JA1012 audit trail has no equivalent here.
Predictive Asset Intelligence SymphonyAI Keeps an SAP connection while adding the analytics SAP APM does not verify: SymphonyAI names SAP explicitly as an integration target alongside AVEVA PI System, AspenTech, SCADA and CMMS, and ships asset templates including FMEA libraries. It is a layer beside your SAP estate rather than inside it, so the ERP-native failure data synchronisation is lost, and its failure prediction method is not published.

Compared with other products

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It has its own product and features pages on sap.com and its own space on the SAP Help Portal, and it is distinct from SAP EAM. The older names SAP Predictive Asset Insights and SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management still circulate, including on some review sites, but SAP Asset Performance Management is the current name.

SAP states it follows a seven-step reliability-centred maintenance process based on SAE JA1012 and applies the standard FMEA process to analyse failure modes, with failure mechanisms, causes and effects assignable per failure mode. Naming a published standard is stronger evidence than most products in this category offer.

sap.com returns HTTP 403 to automated access and the SAP Help Portal returns no readable content to a fetch. No workaround was used. Capabilities were recorded only where SAP’s own wording could be verified through indexed quotation, and everything else is marked unknown.
