What it is

AssetWise is a broad Bentley brand, and the APM-relevant product within it is named AssetWise Reliability. Bentley describes it as asset performance management and reliability software for building proactive inspection and maintenance programmes. Its lineage runs back to Ivara, the reliability engineering software Bentley acquired, and that heritage is still visible in what the product does well.

This is the clearest reliability-modelling product in the category, and unusually it is specific about method rather than vague about AI. Bentley names RCM2, FMEA, RBI (risk based inspection), SIF, MTA and CPR as supported methodologies. That is a concrete, checkable list of reliability engineering techniques, and it is why this product belongs in an APM directory even though it does not market itself on machine learning. It also covers risk assessment, asset prioritisation and asset condition assessment, scoring assets for refurbishment, upgrade or replacement.

Sensor requirement: Bentley does not require you to buy its sensors, and nothing on the product page suggests any hardware dependency. The more important point for a buyer is the reverse: the page also makes no claim about historian ingestion, and names no historian product, no SCADA, no OPC and no protocols. This is not a condition-monitoring platform streaming live tag data. It is a reliability engineering and inspection system that works from operational and inspection data, condition indicators and assessment results. If you want continuous vibration-led monitoring, this is the wrong product and the condition-monitoring entries in this category are the right place to look.

Deployment is better documented than most: Bentley states the product can be hosted by Bentley, run on-premises, or self-hosted or third-party hosted. The database is Microsoft SQL Server, and authentication options include OpenID, Active Directory federation, multi-factor authentication and Windows authentication. Those are exactly the details an enterprise architecture review asks for and that most vendors in this category do not publish.

Two gaps are worth stating plainly. First, no named integrations: the page names no ERP, EAM, CMMS, historian or API integration at all, only SQL Server as the database and the authentication options above. Second, root cause analysis is not mentioned, and there is no dedicated asset health module, only condition assessment and condition indicators. Bentley does frame the product around digital twins in its own FAQ, which is worth noting but is positioning rather than a described mechanism.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

CapabilityStatusNotes
Digital twin A simulation or model-based twin of physical assets. Yes Bentley describes the product as building inspection and maintenance programmes using digital twins. This is positioning; the mechanism is not described in detail. source
FMEA support Failure mode and effects analysis within the product. Yes FMEA named explicitly, alongside RBI, SIF, MTA and CPR. source
Reliability-centred maintenance Structured RCM analysis and strategy development. Yes RCM2 named explicitly as a supported methodology. source
Reliability modelling Reliability and availability modelling of assets or systems. Yes Risk assessment, asset prioritisation and maintenance planning built on named reliability methodologies. source
Asset health scoring Composite asset health or condition indices. Yes Asset condition assessment scores assets for refurbishment, upgrade or replacement, and condition indicators are supported. There is no separate asset health module. source
Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. Not verified No public API documentation found.
Reporting and dashboards Reliability and condition reporting and dashboards. Not verified
Work order and CMMS integration Creating or updating maintenance work from APM output. Not verified No named EAM, CMMS or ERP integration on the product page.
SCADA and historian integration Reading from process historians, SCADA or control systems. Not verified No SCADA, OPC or historian statement found on the product page.
Sensor connectivity Connecting to sensors, whether the vendor supplies them or not. Not verified
Root cause analysis Structured root cause analysis of failures. Not verified Root cause analysis is not mentioned on the product page.
Failure prediction Predicting failure or remaining useful life. Recorded only where a source describes it, not from AI claims. Not verified No failure prediction mechanism described. This product is reliability method led, not machine learning led.
Anomaly detection Detecting deviation from normal behaviour. Recorded only where a source describes the mechanism. Not verified No anomaly detection capability described on the product page.
Vibration analysis Vibration measurement and spectral analysis. Not verified
Condition monitoring Monitoring asset condition from sensor or process data. Not verified

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Names the actual reliability methodologies it supports, RCM2, FMEA, RBI, SIF, MTA and CPR, which is rare in this category and makes the capability checkable rather than aspirational. verified source
  • Publishes real deployment detail: Bentley-hosted, on-premises or self and third-party hosted, on Microsoft SQL Server, with OpenID, AD federation, MFA and Windows authentication. verified source

Limitations

  • No named integrations at all. The product page names no ERP, EAM, CMMS, historian, SCADA or API integration, so connecting it to the systems of record should be assumed to be a project. verified source
  • Not a predictive or condition-monitoring platform. There is no described anomaly detection or failure prediction, so buyers wanting early warning from live sensor data need a different or additional product. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

Fits: asset-intensive owner-operators with a formal reliability engineering or mechanical integrity function, particularly those running inspection-led programmes on fixed equipment. Oil and gas, utilities, water, rail and transport infrastructure are the natural sectors, and Bentley’s published customer stories sit in that space. It suits organisations that want to apply a named standard, RCM2 or RBI, consistently across a large estate and keep the evidence trail, and organisations with a strong preference for on-premises or self-hosted deployment, which Bentley explicitly supports.

Does not fit: teams looking for predictive machine learning or streaming condition monitoring. There is no described anomaly detection, no failure prediction mechanism and no historian or SCADA connectivity on the public page, so a buyer who wants early warning from live sensor data should look elsewhere in this category. It is also unsuited to organisations without reliability engineering skills, because RCM2 and FMEA are labour-intensive methods and software does not supply the judgement they require. Small maintenance teams will not clear the commercial bar.

Typical use cases: running RCM2 or FMEA studies at scale and keeping the results as a living maintenance strategy; risk based inspection programmes for pressure equipment and pipework; asset condition assessment to justify refurbish, upgrade or replace decisions; prioritising a capital maintenance programme by risk and maintenance cost.

Buyer caution: because no integrations are named, assume integration to your EAM or ERP is a project, and get the mechanism and effort confirmed in writing before signing. Pricing is by request only.

Alternatives

SAP Asset Performance Management SAP The nearest peer on reliability method, and the only other product here that names a published standard: SAP states a seven-step RCM process based on SAE JA1012 and applies standard FMEA, with a failure data hierarchy of mechanisms, causes and effects synchronised from SAP ERP. Only sensible if S/4HANA and SAP Plant Maintenance are your system of record. Note the record is thin because sap.com blocks automated access, not because the product is thin.
IBM Maximo Application Suite IBM Gives you the FMEA and RCM work plus the work order engine and asset hierarchy in one platform, through IBM Maximo Asset Performance Management with RCM Strategy Builder providing AI-assisted FMEA, Condition Insight and condition-based health scoring. The difference in commitment is large: Bentley layers onto whatever EAM you have, while this means adopting Maximo as the system of record. Bentley remains stronger on risk based inspection, with RBI and SIF named explicitly.
GE Vernova Asset Performance Management GE Vernova Broader cover of the same ground for a multi-site industrial or energy estate, with asset strategy, integrity and inspection as named areas and a Meridium reliability heritage, plus modules that can be licensed individually. You gain named sensor, edge and OT ingestion and AWS as an integration, which Bentley does not claim. You lose Bentley's checkable methodology list and its published hosting, database and authentication detail, and GE Vernova's predictive mechanism is not published.
Predictive Asset Intelligence SymphonyAI Worth a look if you want FMEA content without doing every study from scratch: SymphonyAI states more than eighty thousand asset templates including FMEA libraries, with asset hierarchy and process relationships modelled, and names PI System, AspenTech, SAP, SCADA and CMMS integrations where Bentley names none. It is a different kind of product though: no RCM2, no RBI, no SIF, and no on-premises option, only cloud, hybrid and edge.
