What it is

Medius leads with accounts payable, not procurement. Its home page headline is autonomous AP powered by agentic AI, with a supporting line about finance teams staying in control, and the solutions navigation puts AP Automation first with the most sub-items: Statement Reconciliation, Payments, Fraud and Risk Detection, Medius Copilot and Supplier Conversations. Procurement, Expense Management, Sourcing, Contracts, Supplier Onboarding and Analytics sit beside it as named sibling solutions, grouped as a Spend Suite. Medius does describe managing the source-to-pay process, but it does not use the term P2P on its home page and AP is unambiguously the hero. It belongs in this category because it genuinely ships a Procurement product, not because it is a procurement suite.

The Procurement module is described with useful specificity. It is framed as capturing spending that slips through the cracks. Users search items or browse punch-out catalogues into a basket; any purchase request can be linked to a contract at creation, with the awarded price and items carrying through to the purchase order, and remaining contract budget visible before spend is committed. Approval workflows and permissions route requisitions to the right people, and approvers can accept or reject by email without logging in, which means approvers need no licence. Purchase orders are generated for automatic distribution. Cumulative spend limits can enforce a hard stop at checkout or demand an extra approval. Configurable dashboards let users drill into transactions or review whole spend categories. Integration runs through Medius Connect, with managed connectors for various ERP platforms and real-time updates.

What it does not cover, and this is the key caveat: procurement is the junior sibling of AP. Invoice matching is delivered through the AP Automation integration rather than standing alone in the procurement product, and the two-way versus three-way behaviour is never stated. No supplier portal is mentioned on the procurement page. No API is mentioned at all, and no developer documentation could be located. Sourcing and Contracts exist as named navigation items, but the sourcing solution page was not reachable, so RFQ and tender management, bid comparison and auctions are all unverified. Medius also names no specific ERP on the pages that could be read, referring only to managed connectors for various ERP platforms, so no named ERP integration is recorded here.

On ownership, the position is genuinely unsettled and should be stated as such. Marlin Equity Partners acquired Medius in 2017 and is reported to remain majority shareholder; Advent International took a minority interest in March 2022; October 2025 press reported Marlin exploring a sale. No confirmed change of control in 2026 was found, medius.com/about-us returns 404, and the Medius newsroom carries items through October 2026 with no ownership announcement. Treat ownership as low confidence and press-level only.

Recent activity is real rather than roadmap: the newsroom records a 20 October 2026 contracts product launch linking contract intelligence to business spend, plus tax and payment integrations with Avalara AvaTax in September 2026, Thomson Reuters sales and use tax in September 2026, Adyen expense cards in February 2026 and Astrada bring-your-own-card in September 2026. Medius also cites inclusion in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Accounts Payable Applications and an IDC 2026 SaaS customer satisfaction award for AP, which is where its analyst standing sits: in AP, not in procurement.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

CapabilityStatusNotes
ERP integration Documented integration with finance and ERP systems. Yes Integration runs through Medius Connect, with managed connectors for various ERP platforms and real-time updates. No specific ERP is named on the pages that could be read. source
Budget control Checking and committing against budgets before approval. Yes Cumulative spend limits can enforce a hard stop at checkout or require an additional approval, and remaining contract budget is visible before committing spend. source
Spend analysis Classified spend reporting and savings analysis. Yes Configurable dashboards let users drill into transactions or review whole spend categories. source
Invoice matching Two-way or three-way matching of invoice, order and receipt. Yes Invoices are compared against purchase orders automatically, but this is delivered through the AP Automation integration rather than standing alone, and two-way versus three-way behaviour is never stated. source
Catalogue management Hosted or punch-out catalogues of approved items and prices. Yes Partial: item search plus punch-outs to third-party catalogues. Catalogue authoring and management depth is not described. source
Contract management Contract repository, terms, renewals and compliance. Yes Contracts is a named solution, and the newsroom records a 20 October 2026 launch of a contracts product linking contract intelligence to business spend. The procurement page shows awarded price and items carrying to the purchase order with remaining contract budget visible. source
Purchase orders Issuing and tracking purchase orders and receipts. Yes Generates purchase orders for automatic distribution. source
Approval workflows Configurable, auditable approval routing and delegation. Yes Approval workflows and permissions route requisitions, and approvers can accept or reject by email without logging in, so approvers need no licence. source
Purchase requisitions Internal requests for goods and services with cost coding. Yes Users search items or browse punch-out catalogues into a basket, and any purchase request can be linked to a contract at creation. source
Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. Not verified No API is mentioned on the procurement page and no developer documentation could be located.
Supplier portal A portal where suppliers transact, submit invoices and maintain their own data. Not verified Not mentioned on the procurement page. The home page names Supplier Conversations under AP Automation, which is not the same thing.
Sourcing events and auctions Running sourcing events, reverse auctions and bid optimisation. Not verified Sourcing is a named solution but auctions are not stated anywhere and the sourcing page was not reachable.
Supplier management Supplier records, onboarding, qualification and performance. Not verified Supplier Onboarding is a named solution in the home page navigation but is not described on the procurement page, so this is confirmed at suite level only and unknown at feature level.
Bid comparison and scoring Side-by-side comparison and weighted scoring of supplier bids. Not verified Not stated on any page that could be read.
RFQ and tender management Issuing requests for quotation or tender and collecting responses. Not verified Sourcing is a named solution in the navigation but the sourcing solution page was not reachable, so RFQ and tender management are unverified.

Prices move and discounting is common. Treat anything here as a starting point and confirm with the vendor before budgeting.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Budget enforcement at the point of purchase: cumulative spend limits can enforce a hard stop at checkout or require an extra approval, and requisitions can be linked to a contract with remaining contract budget visible before commitment. verified source
  • Approvers can accept or reject by email without logging in, which removes licence cost and training friction for occasional approvers. verified source

Limitations

  • Procurement is the junior sibling of AP: invoice matching reaches it only through the AP Automation integration, and no supplier portal, API or sourcing and auction detail is evidenced on the vendor pages that could be read. verified source
  • Ownership is genuinely unsettled. Marlin Equity Partners has been majority holder since 2017 with an Advent International minority since 2022, and a sale process was reported in October 2025 but never confirmed. Medius own about-us page returns 404, so none of this can be verified against the vendor site. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

Medius fits finance-led buyers in the mid-market and enterprise whose primary problem is invoice processing and who want to add controlled purchasing in front of it rather than buy a procurement suite. Three design choices stand out for that buyer: hard spend-limit stops at checkout, requisitions linked to contracts with remaining contract budget visible before commitment, and email-based approvals that need no licence, which keeps rollout cost down when hundreds of occasional approvers are involved. The ERP-connector positioning and the Gartner AP Magic Quadrant placement point at mid-market to enterprise finance functions, though Medius states no size bands, so that is inference.

It fits poorly if procurement is the main event. Sourcing and contracts could not be verified at all, there is no supplier portal, no API is mentioned and no pricing is published, and invoice matching reaches the procurement product only through the AP module. A buyer who needs RFQs, bid scoring or auctions should look at the e-sourcing tools or the full suites in this category. Several of Medius own solution URLs returned 404 during research, so expect to get capability detail from a demo rather than the website.

Typical use cases: replacing manual invoice handling and adding requisition and purchase order discipline in one vendor; enforcing category spend ceilings at the point of purchase; putting punch-out catalogue buying in front of an existing ERP while AP stays with Medius.

Alternatives

Basware Basware (Accel-KKR led consortium with Long Path Partners and Briarwood Capital Partners) The true like-for-like, AP-automation first with a secondary purchasing module. Basware answers Medius two biggest gaps: a genuinely public developer site with five named API families, and a global e-invoicing network with country compliance, Vault archival and supplier bank fraud checks. Not carried over: Medius hard spend limits at checkout, contract-linked requisitions with remaining budget visible, and licence-free email approvals.
Precoro Precoro Inc., bootstrapped and founder owned A class change to procure-to-pay for the same mid-market finance buyer. Precoro leads with purchasing across Intake, Approvals, Orders, Receipts, Invoices, Payments, Budgets and Contracts, publishes real price floors from 499 per month, and documents an API with webhooks. Not carried over: the AP depth and agentic invoice handling Medius leads with, and Precoro names no supplier portal and no matching model.
Procurify Procurify A class change to procure-to-pay, suited to the same mid-market finance-led buyer. Procurify ships a Vendor Portal, which Medius does not mention, plus budget management and spend insights as first-class modules and a published list of accounting-tier integrations. Not carried over: Medius AP automation depth, its licence-free email approvals, and Procurify states outright that its API does not support webhooks.
Vroozi SpendTech Vroozi, Inc. A procure-to-pay alternative that closes the matching question Medius leaves open: Vroozi names two-way and three-way matching explicitly on its AP Invoice Automation page, and ships a named Supplier Portal plus webhooks and a public API documentation site. Not carried over: Medius AP-first agentic automation, its approver licensing model, and Vroozi publishes no actual prices, only tier scaling axes.
Order.co Order.co, independent and venture-backed A partial substitute with a different commercial model, classified as other rather than procure-to-pay because of its marketplace, managed buying and working capital lines. It covers requisitions, approvals, purchase orders, custom catalogues, AP automation with three-way matching and budgets, at a flat published fee of 1,000 to 5,000 USD per month. Not carried over: Medius AP depth, and Order.co names no SAP or Oracle integration at all.

Compared with other products

Frequently asked questions

AP first. Its home page leads with autonomous accounts payable and its navigation puts AP Automation first with the most sub-items. Procurement, Sourcing, Contracts and Supplier Onboarding exist as named sibling solutions in a spend suite, and Medius does genuinely ship a Procurement product, but a buyer evaluating it as a sourcing-led suite will be disappointed.

Unknown. Medius states that invoices are compared against purchase orders automatically, delivered through its AP Automation integration, but never uses two-way or three-way wording on the pages that could be read.

Not settled. Marlin Equity Partners acquired Medius in 2017 and is reported to remain majority shareholder, with Advent International taking a minority interest in March 2022. Press in October 2025 reported Marlin exploring a sale. No confirmed 2026 change of control was found, and Medius own site publishes nothing about its ownership.
