Basware versus Medius: two AP-automation platforms that start from the invoice
Both of these products are accounts payable automation first and procurement second, and both say so on their own sites. They start from the invoice, not the requisition, which is the opposite direction of travel from everything else in this category. That is the frame to hold throughout: if your pain is purchasing discipline, neither of these is the obvious answer, and if your pain is invoice volume, neither of the procure-to-pay tools here will solve it.
Basware press boilerplate calls it the market leader in Invoice Lifecycle Management. Its solutions navigation is ordered AP Automation first and by far the largest group, then e-Invoicing Network, then Compliance, then Invoice Lifecycle Assurance, and Procure-to-Pay last with only two items, e-Procurement and Basware Marketplace. Medius home page headline is autonomous AP powered by agentic AI, and its navigation puts AP Automation first with the most sub-items, with Procurement, Expense Management, Sourcing, Contracts, Supplier Onboarding and Analytics as named sibling solutions grouped as a Spend Suite. Medius does describe managing the source-to-pay process, but AP is unambiguously the hero. Both belong in this directory because each genuinely ships a purchasing module, not because either is a procurement suite.

Full profileThe main differences
What each purchasing module actually does. Basware e-Procurement offers requisition lines approved then automatically issuing purchase orders, a feature called Advanced Approvals, advanced catalogue management with automated stock integration, and budget check matrices that show approvers the budget impact of what they are signing. Medius Procurement is described with more specificity: users search items or browse punch-out catalogues into a basket; any purchase request can be linked to a contract at creation, with awarded price and items carrying through to the purchase order and remaining contract budget visible before spend is committed; approval workflows route requisitions, and approvers can accept or reject by email without logging in, so approvers need no licence, which removes real cost when hundreds of occasional approvers are involved; purchase orders are generated for automatic distribution; and cumulative spend limits can enforce a hard stop at checkout or demand an extra approval. Integration runs through Medius Connect with managed connectors for various ERP platforms.
Where Basware is clearly ahead. Its e-invoicing footprint is genuinely differentiated and hard to replicate: a dedicated network for sending, receiving and archiving with country compliance, enrichment, Vault archival, interoperability and a public Global e-Invoicing Compliance Map, plus Invoice Lifecycle Assurance covering AP Protect, audit and recovery, statement matching and supplier bank account fraud checks. Invoice Matching is a named product. And the technical disclosure is the best in this part of the category: Basware runs a genuinely public developer site documenting a REST API and XML integration methods, with five named API families covering AP Automation, Network, Vault, Data Access and SmartPDF, plus an Integration Selection Guide, an XML file-format reference, and regional cloud endpoints for Europe, the USA, Australia and Canada with test and production environments. Medius mentions no API at all on its procurement page and no developer documentation could be located.
What neither covers. For Basware, strategic sourcing is absent. The e-Procurement page mentions only operational sourcing and a price-on-request feature and does not mention RFQs, tenders or auctions at all, and no sourcing or auction product appears anywhere in the solutions navigation. There is no supplier management product and no contract management product in that navigation. Spend analysis is not offered as a named product, since Basware Insights sits inside AP Automation, so it could not be verified. No supplier portal is described on the e-Procurement page. For Medius, invoice matching reaches the procurement product only through the AP Automation integration rather than standing alone, and two-way versus three-way behaviour is never stated on either side. No supplier portal is mentioned on the Medius procurement page.
Medius is the thin record here, and blocked or missing pages are the cause. Several Medius URLs returned 404, including /solutions/procurement/ and /about-us/, and the Sourcing and Contracts solution pages could not be reached at all. The consequence is that RFQ and tender management, bid comparison and auctions are entirely unverified for Medius, not absent: Sourcing and Contracts exist as named navigation items, and the newsroom records a 20 October 2026 contracts product launch linking contract intelligence to business spend. Ownership is likewise unverifiable from the vendor site, with Marlin Equity Partners reported as majority holder since 2017, an Advent International minority from March 2022 and an October 2025 reported sale exploration, none confirmed. A vendor whose own pages 404 is not the same as a thin product, but it does mean you will get capability detail from a demo rather than a website. Basware has a smaller version of the same problem: /company/newsroom and /company/about-us both 404, so Basware publishes nothing readable about its own ownership either.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Basware

Read the full assessmentWhich to choose
Neither publishes a price. One Medius licensing detail does affect cost and is worth carrying into a business case: approvers acting by email need no licence.
Choose Basware if your problem is invoices at scale across many countries with e-invoicing mandates, non-purchase-order spend to bring under control, or payment fraud exposure, and if your integration team needs to design against a public API before signing. Choose Medius if you want the same AP-first shape with a more specifically described purchasing module, particularly the hard spend-limit stop at checkout, contract-linked requisitions with remaining budget visible before commitment, and licence-free email approvals. Rule out both if procurement is the main event: a sourcing-led buyer should look at JAGGAER, Ivalua or Zycus, or pair an AP platform with a dedicated e-sourcing tool. Note finally that both are private-equity owned and active: Basware was taken private by an Accel-KKR led consortium with Long Path Partners and Briarwood Capital Partners in August 2022 at around 96.2 percent of shares and votes, and completed the acquisition of Trustpair on 5 October 2026, so expect portfolio churn and eventually an owner exit.
Frequently asked questions
No. Both are accounts payable and invoice automation platforms with a purchasing module attached, and both say so on their own sites. Basware lists AP Automation first and largest with procure-to-pay last at two items. Medius leads with autonomous accounts payable and puts AP Automation first with the most sub-items. Each genuinely ships a purchasing product, which is why both are listed here, but a sourcing-led buyer will be disappointed by both.
Basware: nothing on its site says so. The e-Procurement page mentions only operational sourcing and a price-on-request feature, and no sourcing or auction product appears in the solutions navigation. Medius: could not be verified from published sources. Sourcing is a named solution but the sourcing solution page was not reachable, so RFQ and tender management, bid comparison and auctions are all unverified rather than absent.
Neither states it. Basware ships Invoice Matching as a named product within AP Automation but the matching model is not described on the pages opened. Medius states that invoices are compared against purchase orders automatically, delivered through its AP Automation integration, and never uses two-way or three-way wording. Ask for it explicitly.
Basware, and it is a real differentiator. Its public developer site documents a REST API and XML integration with five named API families, an Integration Selection Guide, an XML file-format reference and regional endpoints with test and production environments. Medius mentions no API on its procurement page and no developer documentation could be located.
