Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance

by Microsoft

Microsoft enterprise finance application covering general ledger, payables, receivables, fixed assets, budgeting and cost accounting. It is the upper market Dynamics 365 product, distinct from Business Central, and manufacturing lives in a separate application.

What it is

Dynamics 365 Finance is not the same product as Dynamics 365 Business Central, and the difference is the single most common point of confusion in a Microsoft ERP evaluation. Finance is one of Microsoft's finance and operations applications, documented under the shared fin-ops-core platform alongside Supply Chain Management and Commerce, and it is aimed at larger and more complex organisations. Business Central is a single integrated application that Microsoft explicitly describes as providing functionality for common business processes in small and medium-sized companies. They are separately licensed, built on different application stacks, and a move between them is a reimplementation rather than an upgrade. Choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake to unwind, so establish which one a partner is quoting before comparing prices.

What Finance actually covers. Microsoft's own documentation organises the product around general ledger with a configurable chart of accounts and financial dimensions, accounts payable including invoice matching and invoice capture, accounts receivable including subscription billing plus credit and collections, budgeting with budget planning and budget control, cash and bank management with cash flow forecasting and advanced bank reconciliation, cost accounting with overhead calculation, fixed assets with depreciation conventions, and asset leasing. There is a dedicated public sector functional area, which is unusual at this level of the market and relevant if you are a government or quasi government body.

Statutory and multi-country work is treated as a first class concern rather than an afterthought. The documentation carries a Globalization Studio area covering country and region localisations, a regulatory configuration service, electronic invoicing and a global tax calculation service. For an organisation filing in many jurisdictions, vendor maintained localisations are often the deciding factor between a global suite and a regional product, and this is one of the clearer strengths here.

Integration and extensibility are genuinely strong, and that is the Microsoft argument. The documentation covers a data management REST API and OData service endpoints, Power Platform integration including dual-write to Dataverse and virtual entities, export to Azure Data Lake, Office integration with an Open in Microsoft Office menu, Power BI reporting integration, role based security, and mobile workspaces. If your organisation is already committed to Azure, Power BI and the Microsoft identity stack, the cost of wiring Finance into it is lower than for most alternatives.

The scope limitation buyers most often miss. Manufacturing and warehouse execution are not part of Finance. Microsoft documents Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management as a related but separate product, and project delivery as Dynamics 365 Project Operations. A manufacturer therefore needs Finance plus Supply Chain Management, with the licensing and implementation scope that implies, and should not assume that a Finance quote covers production. For that reason this profile classifies the product as financial management rather than a full ERP suite, and marks manufacturing and project accounting as unknown rather than supported, because the Finance documentation does not claim them.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

HR and payroll Employee records and payroll, native or via integration. Not verified Not claimed on the Finance documentation pages read.
Project accounting Project costing, work in progress and revenue recognition. Not verified Microsoft documents Dynamics 365 Project Operations as a separate related product. Budgeting includes position forecasting, but project accounting itself was not claimed on the Finance pages read.
Manufacturing and production Bills of material, routings and production orders. Not verified Not part of Dynamics 365 Finance. Microsoft documents Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management as a separate related product. Recorded as unknown rather than no because this is a product boundary, not a vendor statement that the function does not exist.
Inventory management Stock valuation, locations and movements. Not verified
Purchasing and procurement Requisitions, purchase orders and goods receipt. Not verified

NoteNo figure recorded. Microsoft does publish Dynamics 365 list pricing on its commercial site, but no Microsoft pricing page was read during this pass, so no amount is asserted here. Microsoft documents a Try Dynamics 365 Finance demo environment path, which is the basis for the free trial value. Real cost comes from a partner quote covering licences plus implementation.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

 • Statutory and tax breadth is treated as core, with a Globalization Studio covering country localisations, a regulatory configuration service, electronic invoicing and a global tax calculation service. verified source
 • Documented REST and OData APIs, Power Platform dual-write, Azure Data Lake export and Office integration make it unusually cheap to integrate for organisations already standardised on Microsoft. verified source

Limitations

 • Manufacturing and project delivery are not in this product. Microsoft documents Supply Chain Management and Project Operations as separate related products, so a manufacturer needs more than one licence and more than one implementation workstream. verified source
 • The product is routinely confused with Business Central in the market, and because the two are not upgrade paths for each other, a wrong segment choice at selection time is corrected only by reimplementing. editorial

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

It fits well when:

 • You are a mid-market or enterprise organisation whose problem is finance at scale: multiple legal entities, consolidation, intercompany, multi-country statutory reporting and tax.
 • You already run Azure, Power BI, Microsoft Entra and Microsoft 365, so the documented Power Platform, Data Lake, Office and Power BI integrations turn into real savings rather than slideware.
 • You need public sector specific functionality, which Microsoft documents as a distinct functional area.
 • You have, or will hire, people comfortable with the fin-ops implementation model, Lifecycle Services, continuous updates and X++ or extension based customisation.

It fits badly when:

 • You are a small or lower mid-market company. Microsoft has a product for that and it is Business Central. Buying Finance instead usually means paying for complexity and an implementation methodology you do not need.
 • You want one application that includes production. Manufacturing is in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, a separate product, so price and scope both change.
 • You want a short, low-touch implementation. Finance is a configured enterprise platform with a formal lifecycle, not a quick setup.
 • You want a published price. Microsoft list pricing for Dynamics 365 is not recorded here because it was not read on a Microsoft page during this pass, and partner pricing differs from list in any case.

A practical test. Write down whether your hardest problem is the ledger or the factory. If it is the ledger, and the factory is simple or absent, Finance is a credible shortlist entry. If the factory is the hard part, you are shopping for Finance plus Supply Chain Management, or for a manufacturing focused suite such as Epicor Kinetic, Syspro, QAD Adaptive ERP or Infor CloudSuite Industrial, and the comparison should be framed that way from the start.

Alternatives

Workday Financial Management Workday The closest like-for-like, because both are financial management rather than full suites. Workday verifies consolidation as core with Close and Consolidate as a named offering, plus multi-currency, project accounting and reporting. Workday mentions no payables, receivables, fixed assets, tax, API or mobile on its product page, so raise each explicitly; Microsoft documents all of those.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Microsoft The right Microsoft product if you are small or medium-sized rather than upper mid-market. It is a single application covering finance, inventory, projects, manufacturing, warehouse and service, so it crosses the operational boundary that Finance does not. Critically, the two are not upgrade paths for each other, so a wrong segment choice is corrected only by reimplementing. See our comparison.
Sage Intacct Sage Another cloud financial management product rather than a full suite, so operational scope such as manufacturing and warehouse management should not be assumed. Be warned that this is among the thinnest records in the category: both sage.com and developer.sage.com returned HTTP 403 Forbidden, so nothing at all could be verified, including the financial-management classification itself.
Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP Oracle The enterprise full-suite alternative if your requirement extends past finance. Actively invested in on a quarterly release cadence with 26B, 26C and 26D documentation published side by side. oracle.com returned HTTP 403, so no functional capability could be verified, and Oracle brands the documentation Oracle Financials rather than Fusion Cloud ERP, which complicates research.
Unit4 ERP Unit4 Relevant if you are a people-centric or services organisation rather than a manufacturer. Unit4 runs a disclosed quarterly ERPx release train and offers a governed analytics path via Unit4 DataHub. unit4.com returned HTTP 429 Too Many Requests on every attempt, so finance, payroll, multi-company, tax and API detail is not publicly readable and must be requested in writing.

Compared with other products

Frequently asked questions

They are different products for different market segments. Microsoft describes Business Central as providing functionality for common business processes in small and medium-sized companies, and ships it as one application that includes manufacturing, warehouse and service. Finance is one of the finance and operations applications aimed at larger and more complex organisations, and it does not include manufacturing, which is sold as Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. They are licensed separately and moving between them is a reimplementation, not an upgrade.

No, not within this product. Microsoft lists Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management as a separate related product for supply chain and production. Budget for both if you manufacture.

Not verified. Microsoft documents a choose your deployment type article for the finance and operations apps, but the deployment options were not confirmed on the pages read this pass, so on-premises and hybrid are recorded as unknown.

Yes. Microsoft documents a data management REST API, OData service endpoints and a general API reference, plus Power Platform dual-write and Azure Data Lake export.
