Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance versus SAP S/4HANA Cloud
These two are not like-for-like, and the difference is a product boundary rather than a feature gap. Dynamics 365 Finance is classified here as financial management, not as a full ERP suite, because Microsoft puts operations and manufacturing in separate products. Microsoft documents Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management and Dynamics 365 Project Operations as separate related products. SAP S/4HANA Cloud is positioned as a full suite. So a manufacturer comparing these two is comparing one product against part of a product set, and will need more than one Microsoft licence and more than one implementation workstream to close the gap.
The evidence quality is also wildly asymmetric, and in Microsoft favour. Microsoft Learn was fully accessible, so eight capabilities in the Dynamics 365 Finance profile are verified against Microsoft documentation: general ledger with a configurable chart of accounts and financial dimensions, accounts payable including invoice matching and invoice capture, accounts receivable including subscription billing and collections, fixed assets plus a separate asset leasing area, tax compliance, financial reporting, documented APIs and mobile access. For SAP S/4HANA Cloud, nothing functional could be verified at all, because sap.com returned HTTP 403 Forbidden on every attempt and help.sap.com returned a page title with no document body.
Be careful with that asymmetry. It does not mean SAP S/4HANA Cloud does less. It means SAP has made its own published material unreadable to automated verification, so you cannot check claims yourself before a sales process, while with Microsoft you can.

The products
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance
Microsoft
Microsoft enterprise finance application covering general ledger, payables, receivables, fixed assets, budgeting and cost accounting. It is the upper market Dynamics 365 product, distinct from Business Central, and manufacturing lives in a separate application.
Full profileSAP S/4HANA Cloud
SAP
SAP's current flagship cloud ERP suite, and the product SAP directs new mid-market and enterprise cloud ERP buyers toward. Vendor pages could not be read this pass because sap.com refused automated access, so this profile is deliberately thin.
Full profileThe main differences
The suite boundary
Dynamics 365 Finance covers general ledger, payables, receivables, fixed assets, budgeting and cost accounting. Manufacturing is recorded as unknown specifically because it is a product boundary: Microsoft documents it elsewhere. Project accounting is the same story, documented under Project Operations. HR and payroll are not claimed on the Finance pages read. If your requirement is finance-led, this is a clean and well-documented product. If it includes production, warehouse or project delivery, you are buying a multi-product Microsoft estate and should price and plan it that way.
Statutory compliance
This is the strongest verified differentiator on the Microsoft side. Statutory and tax breadth is treated as core, with a Globalization Studio covering country localisations, a regulatory configuration service, electronic invoicing and a global tax calculation service. For a group operating across several jurisdictions that is a material, checkable advantage. The equivalent SAP capability could not be verified from published sources, which is an evidence problem rather than a known weakness.
Integration cost
Documented REST and OData APIs, Power Platform dual-write, Azure Data Lake export and Office integration make Dynamics 365 Finance unusually cheap to integrate for an organisation already standardised on Microsoft. Verified integrations include REST API, Power BI, Azure, Excel and Dynamics CRM. No integration could be sourced for SAP S/4HANA Cloud in this pass. If you have existing systems to connect, our notes on batch versus real-time integration and one-way versus two-way integration are worth reading before you scope that work.
The segment trap
Dynamics 365 Finance is routinely confused with Dynamics 365 Business Central in the market. They are different products aimed at different segments and are not upgrade paths for each other, so a wrong segment choice at selection time is corrected only by reimplementing. If you are small or medium-sized, Business Central is very likely the right Microsoft comparison, not Finance.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Pick Dynamics 365 Finance if your requirement is finance and compliance, you are already a Microsoft organisation, and operations can be handled separately or not at all. You get the best-documented record in this comparison, a verified localisation and tax story, and an integration surface you can read before you sign.
Put SAP S/4HANA Cloud on the list if you need one suite rather than a portfolio, and accept that you will have to extract the functional detail through a structured demonstration and written contractual answers rather than from public material. That is a real cost in evaluation time and risk, and you should budget for it.
Do not let the evidence asymmetry decide this for you. A thin public record caused by a vendor blocking crawlers tells you something about the vendor transparency, not about the software. Equally, do not reward openness by buying a product that stops at the edge of your requirement. Write down whether you need manufacturing. If you do, this comparison is already the wrong one, and the honest shortlist is SAP S/4HANA Cloud against Dynamics 365 Finance plus Supply Chain Management, costed and scoped as two implementations.
Frequently asked questions
No, and that is why it is classified as financial management rather than a full ERP suite. Microsoft documents Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management as a separate related product, and Project Operations separately again. A manufacturer needs more than one licence and more than one implementation workstream.
sap.com returned HTTP 403 Forbidden on every attempt and help.sap.com returned only a page title with no document body, so no functional capability, edition name, integration or price could be verified from SAP directly. All SAP capabilities are recorded as unknown, meaning not verified from published sources, not absent.
Probably, if you are a small or medium-sized company. Business Central is Microsoft single-application ERP for that segment and covers finance, inventory, projects, manufacturing, warehouse and service in one product. It is a different product from Dynamics 365 Finance and the two are not upgrade paths for each other. See our Business Central versus Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations comparison.
Only Microsoft can be evidenced. Dynamics 365 Finance documents a Globalization Studio for country localisations, a regulatory configuration service, electronic invoicing and a global tax calculation service. The SAP equivalent could not be verified because the vendor site refused automated access. For GCC-specific requirements see our notes on UAE and GCC VAT and UAE corporate tax.
