GridPoint
by GridPoint
Energy intelligence and automated building operations platform for small commercial sites, collecting data from HVAC, refrigeration and lighting and providing anomaly detection, HVAC scheduling and demand management.
What it is
GridPoint sits at an unusual point in this category because it combines software with actual control of equipment. The vendor describes an energy intelligence platform that collects data from HVAC, refrigeration and lighting, and then layers automated building operations on top: software that analyses equipment data to optimise efficiency, anomaly detection that flags inefficiencies and recommends fixes, HVAC health monitoring that tracks units and helps prioritise and validate repairs, and HVAC advanced scheduling that automates operation based on time of use rates, occupancy, sensors and daylight. The time of use rate input is important: it means the platform is not just reporting consumption, it is shifting load in response to tariff structure.
Demand management is a first class capability rather than an afterthought. GridPoint markets dynamic load flexibility and grid interactive buildings, and lists utilities themselves as a customer segment for grid reliability and demand management. That dual audience, building owners on one side and utilities on the other, shapes the product: it is built to aggregate many small sites into dispatchable load, which is a different engineering problem from reporting on a few large buildings. Real time visibility across facilities is offered, and GridPoint names specific verticals: food and beverage, retail and convenience, and automotive and transportation. Those are chain businesses with refrigeration load and hundreds of near identical small sites, which is exactly the shape of portfolio the product is engineered for.
What GridPoint is not. It is not a utility bill management system. Nothing on the vendor site describes invoice capture, bill validation, tariff reconciliation or cost allocation, so buyers with an invoice processing problem should look at EnergyCAP or a comparable bill bureau. It is not an ESG or carbon disclosure suite; no emissions accounting or reporting framework support is advertised. It is not a power quality monitoring product in the Power Monitoring Expert sense. And while it does anomaly detection and HVAC health monitoring, it is not positioned as a general fault detection and diagnostics engine across all building systems the way SkySpark or Clockworks are, with a large rules library and ranked avoidable cost output. Its diagnostics are focused on the equipment classes it controls.
The documentation gaps are real. Metering and submetering are not named as features even though the platform clearly ingests equipment data. Lighting control is not described even though lighting data is collected. Dashboards are not named as such, there is no application programming interface statement, no mobile application statement and no benchmarking statement. Pricing is not published: GridPoint mentions customisable and out of the box packages, a free energy analysis and a three month pilot, but no figures. The pilot offer is genuinely useful and more concrete than most competitors here provide, though a pilot is not a free version.
Capabilities
Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.
| Capability | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BMS and building integration Taking data directly from building management systems. | Yes | Collects data from and schedules HVAC, refrigeration and lighting equipment. source |
| Demand and load management Managing peak demand and load shifting. | Yes | Dynamic load flexibility and grid interactive buildings, with utilities as a named customer segment. source |
| Fault detection and diagnostics Identifying equipment faults from system behaviour. | Yes | HVAC health monitoring tracks units, diagnoses issues and helps prioritise and validate repairs. Scoped to controlled equipment, not a general FDD rules library. source |
| Anomaly detection Detecting abnormal consumption against a baseline. | Yes | Flags inefficiencies and recommends fixes. source |
| Tariff and cost analysis Modelling tariffs and validating charges against them. | Yes | HVAC advanced scheduling automates operation based on time of use rates. source |
| Mobile access Mobile or responsive access to dashboards and alerts. | Not verified | Monitoring from anywhere is claimed, but no mobile application is described. |
| Documented API A publicly documented API for integration. | Not verified | No API mentioned on the vendor site. |
| Reporting and exports Scheduled reporting and data export. | Not verified | No explicit reporting or export statement found. |
| Dashboards Configurable dashboards for consumption and cost. | Not verified | Real time visibility is described but dashboards are not named. |
| Portfolio benchmarking Comparing buildings across a portfolio on normalised metrics. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting Emissions accounting across reporting scopes. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Carbon and emissions reporting Converting consumption into emissions for reporting. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Water and gas tracking Tracking utilities beyond electricity. | Not verified | No statement found. |
| Utility bill management Capturing, validating and allocating utility invoices. | Not verified | No statement found. Do not assume bill management. |
| Energy metering and submetering Collecting and storing meter data, including submeters. | Not verified | Equipment data is collected but metering or submetering is not named as a feature. |

| Note | No figures published. The vendor mentions customisable and out of the box packages, a free energy analysis and a three month pilot. The pilot is recorded as a free trial; it is not a free version of the product. Expect hardware and installation cost given the control capability, though the vendor does not state this. |

Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Acts rather than only reports. HVAC advanced scheduling automates equipment against time of use rates, occupancy, sensors and daylight, which few platforms in this category do. verified source
- Demand management and grid interactive capability is a core offering, with utilities as a named customer segment, opening demand response participation as well as efficiency savings. verified source
Limitations
- No utility bill management, no carbon reporting and no benchmarking advertised, so it does not serve finance or sustainability reporting requirements. editorial
- Thin published documentation. No API, mobile or metering statement, which makes data portability and integration an open question. editorial
Who it suits
Organisation sizes: Small, Medium, Enterprise
GridPoint fits chain operators with large numbers of small, broadly similar sites where HVAC and refrigeration dominate the load: convenience store networks, quick service restaurants, grocery, pharmacy chains, car dealerships and transport depots. In that setting the combination of monitoring plus actual HVAC control plus tariff aware scheduling produces savings that a pure reporting platform cannot, because the software acts rather than advises. It also fits organisations interested in demand response revenue or in participating in grid flexibility programmes, and it fits utilities running efficiency or demand side management programmes for their commercial customers. The offered three month pilot and free energy analysis make it relatively low risk to test against a real site.
It is a poor fit for large single asset buildings with complex central plant, where a dedicated fault detection platform working off a full building management system will find more. It is a poor fit where the requirement is financial: invoice validation, budget variance, chargeback and cost recovery are not what this product does. It is a poor fit for ESG disclosure, since no emissions reporting is advertised. Buyers should expect hardware and installation to be part of the engagement given the control capability, should budget for site visits across the estate, and should get written answers on metering, application programming interface access, mobile tooling and benchmarking, none of which the vendor site confirms. Anyone needing an open data path out of the platform into their own warehouse should treat that as an open question.
Alternatives
Compared with other products
Frequently asked questions
Both. Alongside monitoring and anomaly detection it offers HVAC advanced scheduling that automates equipment against time of use rates, occupancy, sensors and daylight, plus demand management for load flexibility.
The vendor offers a free energy analysis and a three month pilot. No pricing figures are published for the product itself.
Neither is advertised on the vendor site. If invoice validation or ESG disclosure is your requirement, this is the wrong product category fit and you should look at a bill management or ESG reporting platform.
