Honeywell Forge Asset Performance Management versus ABB Ability Genix APM

Two automation majors, two APM suites, and neither requires you to buy the vendor's hardware. Both state it, and both state it from their own documents rather than leaving it to inference.

Honeywell is explicitly vendor-agnostic. Its APM brochure describes a unified and vendor-agnostic platform allowing integration of data and custom models across different equipment types and OEM vendors into a single solution, says it can connect the balance of plant assets across all sites and integrate with OEM condition-based monitoring systems, and a 2025 Honeywell release on a North Sea deployment repeats the OEM-agnostic claim. Honeywell does sell optional Versatilis plug-and-play wireless sensors for condition-based vibration monitoring, and draws on Experion PKS Field Device Manager for instrument health and CCC control systems for turbomachinery, but none of that is a precondition. Notably, Corrosion Advisor is described as providing predictive corrosion insight without requiring corrosion sensors.

ABB explicitly does not require ABB hardware either. ABB describes Genix APM Predict as bringing together condition information from disparate systems into one browser-based dashboard, gathering and integrating information from electrical, vibration and process equipment, devices, and telecom and IT systems, with quick integration into the existing OT system landscape and extensive connectivity to IoT devices. ABB control systems 800xA and System 800xA S+ are named integrations, not preconditions. The honest qualifier is that ABB names no third-party historian, no OPC version and no competing control system, so connector coverage for a non-ABB estate still needs confirming in writing.

On predictive capability the two records diverge, and ABB is the one that earns credit for restraint. Honeywell describes a hybrid mechanism rather than pure machine learning: first-principle-based efficiency models, machine-learning-powered anomaly detection algorithms, and mechanical fault monitoring as leading indicators, applied to a unified data set to recognise early signs of health issues and predict potential time to failure. It names concrete failure modes including boiler tube leakage, compressor lube oil system loss of pressure, furnace decoking cycle improvement, remaining useful life of a positive displacement pump and remaining corrosion allowance in crude distillation units. On that evidence failure prediction and anomaly detection are recorded as supported. ABB, by contrast, calls Predict a fully integrated condition monitoring system that enables a path to predictive maintenance. That phrasing is notably more modest than most of this category and is to ABB's credit, and because ABB claims no prediction mechanism, failure prediction and anomaly detection are recorded as unknown for Genix APM rather than invented.

The main differences

Model library against dashboard consolidation. Honeywell ships a standard asset model library of over forty asset types and more than one hundred asset variants, built by Honeywell engineers across reliability, instrumentation and controls, machinery, maintenance, process simulation and corrosion, containing predefined fault models, fault trees, KPIs, causes, consequences and corrective actions. That is the level of specificity this category usually lacks. ABB Predict is narrower and clearer about it: aggregated condition status and fault statistics for user-configurable equipment groups, tracking of fault-status counts over time, a drag-and-drop dashboard editor and a comment and share tool for collaborative problem solving. If your first problem is fragmentation rather than prediction, ABB's value is pulling electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and automation condition data into one browser view.

Two things deliberately not upgraded on the Honeywell side. FMEA and digital twin are both recorded as unknown. The asset models contain fault models, fault trees, causes, consequences and corrective actions, which is FMEA-like content, but Honeywell never names FMEA as a supported method, so it is not credited. Digital twin appears only in third-party analyst commentary, not in any Honeywell source, so it is not credited either. RCM is not named for Honeywell, and no reliability method is named for ABB either. If an auditable reliability method is your deliverable, neither of these is the right product and the reliability-modelling entries in this category are.

Architecture and commercials. Both support on-premises and cloud. Honeywell is modular with named Health Analytics and Performance Analytics submodules, a Configuration Studio, an Advanced Analytics Workbench, event management, performance case management and an explicit CMMS work order integration module, and it can be rolled out incrementally from one site to an enterprise; Asset Sentinel is the on-premises version. ABB states hosting flexibility on-premises or in the cloud and modularity so functionality can be added incrementally, and uniquely in this category it states a licensing posture: Genix APM Predict is offered both as Software as a Service and as a perpetual licence. No amount is published by either vendor. Honeywell publishes savings, earlier-detection and payback figures; none are recorded here. Both offer a managed wrapper, Honeywell as subscription Remote Monitoring Services with its own reliability experts owning event monitoring and case management, ABB as an add-on where ABB personnel monitor and manage the equipment.

Naming, both messy. Honeywell's current marketed name is Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Industrials, Asset Performance, while its own brochure is titled simply Asset Performance Management, and Asset Sentinel, IR and IRIS are all in the lineage. ABB launched the suite in 2021 and it is now a tiered family: Genix APM Predict, Predict 360, Perform 360 and Assess 360, plus a Genix Asset Performance Management Copilot built with Microsoft. Only the entry tier is documented publicly; no datasheet for the 360 tiers could be read.

Which to choose

Choose Honeywell Forge Asset Performance Management if you are a large process operator in oil and gas, refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, semiconductor manufacturing or mining with standard process equipment, and you want vendor-supplied models with embedded domain knowledge rather than building your own. The hybrid method addresses energy and performance degradation as well as mechanical health, which ABB Predict does not claim. The risk is coverage: a model-led product is only as good as its coverage of your equipment, and Honeywell states the library size without publishing which asset types are in it, so unusual or bespoke equipment is a genuine risk. Get the exact product name and release in writing, and establish whether the Remote Monitoring Service is included or separately subscribed.

Choose ABB Ability Genix APM if your first problem is fragmented condition data across electrical, mechanical and automation systems, you want a modest and honestly scoped starting point, and particularly if ABB is already your automation, drives or electrification supplier. The modularity, the on-premises or cloud choice and the SaaS or perpetual licence option make a single-system start practical, so a mid-sized site can begin small. Get three things in writing: which tier is quoted, since Predict, Predict 360, Perform 360 and Assess 360 are not equivalent; the connector list for your non-ABB systems including historian and OPC specifics, which ABB does not publish; and whether the Copilot and the ABB monitoring service are included or priced separately.

Frequently asked questions

No. Honeywell describes an explicitly vendor-agnostic platform integrating data and custom models across equipment types and OEM vendors, with Versatilis sensors optional and Corrosion Advisor working without corrosion sensors. ABB states Genix APM Predict brings together condition information from disparate systems with quick integration into the existing OT landscape, and names 800xA and S+ as integrations rather than requirements.

Honeywell. It describes a hybrid mechanism of first-principle efficiency models, machine-learning anomaly detection and mechanical fault monitoring, and names concrete failure modes including boiler tube leakage, compressor lube oil pressure loss and remaining corrosion allowance. ABB claims only a path to predictive maintenance for Predict and describes no mechanism, so failure prediction is recorded as unknown.

Both are recorded as unknown. The asset models contain fault models, fault trees, causes, consequences and corrective actions, which is FMEA-like content, but Honeywell never names FMEA as a supported method. Digital twin appears only in third-party analyst commentary rather than in any Honeywell source. Neither was upgraded.

Yes, both. Honeywell states on-premises or cloud-hosted via Honeywell Forge and names Asset Sentinel as the on-premises version. ABB states hosting on-premises or in the cloud, with the product offered as SaaS or as a perpetual licence.
