What it is

Yellowfin's distinctive features are its narrative and signal capabilities. Stories let an analyst wrap a chart in written explanation inside the tool, and Signals watches datasets for changes worth a human looking at. Both address a real failing of dashboard culture, which is that a chart alone rarely tells anyone what changed or why it matters.

It supports both cloud and self-hosted deployment and has a long-standing OEM business, so it appears embedded inside other vendors' products.

It is a smaller player, and the practical consequences are a thinner skills market and a less visible community than the leaders.

Capabilities

Each capability carries its own verification status. “Not verified” means exactly that: it has not been checked, and must not be read as absent.

Who it suits

Organisation sizes: Medium, Enterprise

Organisations that want explanation and change detection alongside dashboards, and software vendors wanting an embeddable platform with deployment flexibility.

Harder to justify where an existing Microsoft or Salesforce relationship already provides a BI tool.

Alternatives

Sisense Sisense A larger embedded analytics vendor with similar deployment flexibility.
GoodData GoodData Headless and API-first for teams building their own interface.

Frequently asked questions

Signals monitor datasets and flag statistically notable changes so somebody looks without having to check a dashboard. Stories let an analyst publish written narrative around charts in the tool itself, so the explanation travels with the number instead of living in a separate document.
