SAP Business One versus Odoo

Both of these target small and medium-sized companies, and they could hardly be more different in how much you can find out before you talk to a salesperson.

Odoo publishes real per-user pricing with the currency stated on the page: 16.90 US dollars per user per month on the Standard plan at the annual rate, 21.10 monthly, and 32.00 annual or 40.00 monthly on the Custom plan. Almost no other vendor in this category does that, so you can build a cost model without entering a sales process. There is also a genuinely free tier rather than only a trial, because Odoo states the One App Free plan is free for unlimited users forever.

For SAP Business One, nothing could be verified from the vendor. sap.com returned HTTP 403 Forbidden and help.sap.com returned only a page title with no body, so no capability, integration, deployment or pricing claim could be sourced to SAP. General ledger, inventory, manufacturing, documented API and mobile access are all recorded as unknown, meaning not verified from published sources rather than absent. SAP Business One is a long-established small business ERP with a large installed base; what is thin here is the public record, because SAP blocks automated access to its own pages.

Two things about SAP Business One were verifiable, both from a third-party SAP partner analysis of the Business ByDesign withdrawal. It is the SAP option identified for smaller companies migrating from SAP Business ByDesign, so it has a defined place in the SAP range rather than being a legacy sideline. And it is described as primarily on-premise, run in the customer data centre or with a hosting provider, which is a different operating model from the vendor-run SaaS most rivals in this category offer. Note that the deployment fields are still recorded as unknown, because that characterisation is not an SAP statement.

The main differences

Operating model is the real decision

If SAP Business One is primarily run in your own data centre or with a hosting provider, you are taking on infrastructure, patching, upgrade scheduling and the staff to do it, in exchange for control. Odoo on Odoo Online or Odoo.sh is vendor-run, and the pricing page only referenced those options, so on-premises Odoo is recorded as unknown even though Odoo is commonly self-hosted in the market. Decide which operating model you want first. It will reshape your cost model more than any licence rate. Our cloud versus on-premise TCO piece works through the arithmetic.

The channel

SAP Business One is sold through partners, so quoted prices vary by partner and by hosting arrangement in any case. Combined with the unreadable vendor site, that means buyers get no independently checkable functional detail and must rely entirely on the partner who is selling to them. That is not a reason to rule it out. It is a reason to take references from customers of your size, in your sector and in your country, and to put every functional commitment in the contract.

Odoo published caveats

  • The Standard headline price is promotional: the footnote states the discount is valid for 12 months for initial users ordered, so year two costs more.
  • Multi-company and external API access are gated to the Custom plan, roughly double the Standard per-user price. Odoo states that installing Studio or adding companies moves an account onto Custom. Odoo.sh hosting is not included in the Custom plan price.
  • A Light User tier is listed at 5.90 per user but requires a custom quote.

Multi-company and documented API are in fact the only two verified Odoo capabilities, and both sit behind the Custom plan. Everything else, including accounting, inventory and manufacturing, is recorded as unknown because only the pricing page was read in the verification pass. Odoo has those apps; they were not sourced, so nothing is claimed.

Manufacturing

Unknown for both, for different reasons. For SAP Business One because the vendor site could not be read. For Odoo because no manufacturing capability statement was sourced and depth was not assessed. If you manufacture, this pair cannot be separated on public evidence and you need a scripted demonstration with your own bills of material and routings.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Strengths and limitations

Drawn from each product's own profile, where every item is labelled a verified fact or an editorial judgement.

Which to choose

Choose Odoo if cost transparency and a low-commitment start matter to you. You can model the spend yourself, start free on one app, and scale. Price the Custom plan from the outset if you have more than one entity or any integration ambition, and model year two at the undiscounted rate so the promotional footnote does not surprise your budget.

Choose SAP Business One if you want the SAP name, an established partner ecosystem and a defined migration path inside the SAP range, and you are comfortable running the system in your own environment or with a hosting provider. Go in knowing you cannot verify functional claims from public material, so your diligence has to be reference calls and a contract that lists what the system will do.

Do not mistake the evidence gap for a quality gap in either direction. Odoo looks well documented here because it publishes a pricing page that can be read, not because its functional record is strong, since almost all of its capabilities are unverified too. SAP Business One looks thin because sap.com returned 403, not because the product is thin. Frequently asked questions

sap.com returned HTTP 403 Forbidden and help.sap.com returned only a page title with no body, so nothing functional could be sourced to SAP. General ledger, inventory, manufacturing, API and mobile access are recorded as unknown, meaning not verified from published sources. SAP Business One has a large installed base; the record is thin because the vendor blocks automated access, not because the product is.

The deployment fields are recorded as unknown because no SAP statement could be read. A third-party SAP partner analysis describes it as primarily on-premise, run in the customer data centre or with a hosting provider, which is a different operating model from the vendor-run SaaS most rivals offer. Confirm the hosting arrangement and who patches it before you sign.

The Custom plan rate, 32.00 per user per month annual or 40.00 monthly, not the 16.90 Standard headline. Odoo states that adding companies moves an account onto the Custom plan, and external API access is a Custom inclusion too. Odoo.sh hosting is not included in that price.

It cannot be answered from published sources. Manufacturing is unknown for both: for SAP Business One because the vendor site could not be read, and for Odoo because no manufacturing capability statement was sourced and depth was not assessed. Run a scripted demo with your own bills of material and routings.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
