SAP Ariba versus Coupa: two source-to-pay suites, two very different evidence trails

SAP Ariba and Coupa are both classified in this directory as source-to-pay, meaning each one claims the full arc from a sourcing event through requisition, purchase order and invoice. Neither is an ERP and neither is a general ledger. SAP describes Ariba as a family of separately licensed modules, with the procure-to-pay module formally named SAP Ariba Buying and Invoicing and sourcing, contracts, supplier lifecycle and spend analysis sold as siblings. Coupa describes itself in its own filings as Business Spend Management and in more recent material as Total Spend Management, layering procurement, invoicing, expenses and payments on top of an ERP the customer keeps.

What neither product covers is worth stating before any feature table. Neither is a general ledger, neither replaces your ERP, and in Ariba case SAP states openly that invoice reconciliation and payment require SAP Ariba Invoice Management licensed on top of Buying and Invoicing, and that paper invoices are not captured automatically but must be keyed by accounts payable staff or converted through a separate service. For Coupa, two capability cells that competitors publish plainly could not be verified from a Coupa-owned page at all: weighted or sealed-bid scoring, and budget ledgers. The filings describe spend policies and rules that prevent excessive spend, which is policy enforcement rather than budget control, so budget control is recorded here as unverified rather than present. If the distinction between these two product classes is new to you, start with source-to-pay versus procure-to-pay.

The main differences

Where Ariba is stronger on published evidence. SAP publishes an open API index covering 76 REST APIs plus a SOAP index, readable without an account, including document approval, sourcing project management, event management, e-tendering notice management, surrogate bid and cost breakdown extraction, multi-ERP configuration and an SCIM provisioning API. ERP invoice load, accounting validation and ledger write-back are documented. That is an unusually broad public surface for an enterprise suite, and it means an integration team can do real diligence before signing. Ariba also ships a supplier network: SAP Business Network supplier accounts, a supplier mobile app and cXML exchange, so suppliers transact without the buyer building a portal.

Where Coupa is stronger. Coupa states in its own filings that it does not charge suppliers to transact with its customers. SAP, by contrast, publishes a supplier fee schedule: annual Enterprise Account tiers of 50 Bronze, 750 Silver, 2,250 Gold and 5,500 Platinum, plus quarterly transaction fees of 0.35 percent of dollars processed for service-entry-sheet relationships and 0.155 percent otherwise, chargeable only past five documents and 50,000 with a given customer. Those are costs your suppliers pay, not your licence price, and they are a genuine onboarding obstacle for a long-tail supplier base. Coupa also has breadth Ariba sells in pieces: requisitioning, invoicing, expenses, payments through Coupa Pay, strategic sourcing with reverse auctions where suppliers bid prices down, contracts, contingent workforce, supplier risk, treasury and spend analysis with more than 100 out-of-the-box reports plus community benchmarking.

The evidence problem, which is the real finding. Both vendors block automated access to their marketing sites. sap.com returned HTTP 403 throughout, as did community.sap.com, so every Ariba fact here comes from SAP-owned learning.sap.com, support.ariba.com and a readable help.sap.com API index. Coupa is worse: coupa.com returned 403, docs.coupa.com is JavaScript-gated, compass.coupa.com redirects to an Okta sign-in, and the one openly readable API page declares itself legacy and unmaintained. The consequence is that the most authoritative public description of Coupa is its FY2022 annual report on Form 10-K, roughly four and a half years old. Coupa is the thin record in this pairing. A vendor blocking automated access is not the same as a thin product, and nothing here says Coupa has stopped developing; it says the public record has gone quiet since Thoma Bravo took it private, with a minority investment from a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, in an all-cash deal of about 8.0 billion dollars at 81.00 dollars per share closing 28 February 2023.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Strengths and limitations

Drawn from each product's own profile, where every item is labelled a verified fact or an editorial judgement.

Which to choose

Neither vendor publishes a buyer price, and in both cases the research could not even confirm whether a pricing page exists, because the sites refuse automated requests. Third-party sites quote Coupa figures ranging from 2,210 dollars per year to 250,000 dollars per year; those were rejected as unverifiable and none should be trusted. See what procurement software really costs for how to budget without a rate card.

Choose Ariba if you are already an SAP finance shop, you can absorb modular licensing and a multi-year programme, and your integration team needs to design against a published API before purchase. Choose Coupa if you want one platform across requisitioning, invoicing, expenses and payments above a mixed ERP estate, if reverse auctions matter, and if supplier onboarding not being gated behind supplier fees is worth real money to you. Discount Coupa if you need to evaluate the technology before buying, because the documentation is effectively closed, or if budget ledgers and encumbrance accounting are a hard requirement, which Coupa published material does not establish. Treat every Coupa capability here as 2022-vintage and reconfirm it with the vendor in writing.

Frequently asked questions

No. Neither publishes a buyer subscription price, and because both sites refused automated access the research could not confirm whether a pricing page exists for either. The only published figures anywhere in this pairing are supplier-side SAP Business Network fees, which your suppliers pay, not you. Aggregator prices for Coupa conflict wildly and were rejected.

Yes for SAP and no for Coupa, and this is the sharpest practical difference. SAP publishes annual Enterprise Account tiers from 50 to 5,500 plus percentage transaction fees on SAP Business Network. Coupa states in its own filings that it does not charge suppliers to transact with its customers. Free for suppliers is not the same as a free tier for buyers.

Ariba is the better documented. SAP describes an Invoice Reconciliation document resolving discrepancies between invoice, order or contract and receipt, plus Evaluated Receipt Settlement, although it never uses the phrase three-way match and reconciliation requires SAP Ariba Invoice Management as an additional module. Coupa states that it routes and matches invoices automatically, but two-way versus three-way behaviour and tolerance configuration could not be verified from published sources.

It trades under the Coupa name but is no longer publicly traded. Thoma Bravo completed the take-private on 28 February 2023 and Coupa was delisted from Nasdaq. Thoma Bravo lists it as a current portfolio company with no exit shown. The transaction was not implemented in South Africa pending that competition authority, and the South African businesses were ring-fenced.

Sources and review basis

Attribute values come from each product's structured profile rather than being written into this page, so a correction made once appears everywhere. This comparison was last reviewed on 7 November 2026. Assessment of this category is documentation-based, not hands-on testing of every product.
