Falkonry Time Series AI versus TwinThread: two unsettled ownership stories

Both of these are software platforms over existing operational data, neither requires vendor sensors, and both come with an ownership question a buyer has to resolve before contracting. The questions are different in kind.

Falkonry ownership is unverified. IFS announced in August 2023 that it had signed an agreement to acquire Falkonry, with completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2023, and the stated rationale was adding anomaly detection to IFS ERP, EAM, FSM and ESM products. No completion announcement could be verified. falkonry.com carries no IFS branding of any kind, markets the product independently and offers its own trial, and aggregator records show funding activity dated after the announced acquisition, which is inconsistent with a completed takeover. The possibilities include a deal that did not close, a technology acquisition that left the brand operating separately, or a subsequent separation. This directory records the product as active and independently marketed and does not resolve the ownership question. Ask Falkonry directly who owns the company, and ask IFS the same question from the other side.

TwinThread is mid-acquisition and the acquirer is known. TwinThread's own announcement states that, as announced at AVEVA World 2026, AVEVA has entered into an agreement to acquire TwinThread, that completion remains subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals, and that until then the two will continue to operate as independent businesses. Trade and analyst coverage dates the announcement to May 2026. One aggregator asserts a July 2026 completion, which conflicts with the pending language elsewhere and was not treated as confirmed here.

There is a further wrinkle a buyer should know. AVEVA Advanced Analytics on CONNECT has been described as powered by TwinThread, so the two companies already overlap technically. An AVEVA buyer may end up with TwinThread technology either way, whether they buy TwinThread, AVEVA Advanced Analytics on CONNECT, or sit alongside AVEVA Predictive Analytics, which is profiled separately in this category. That makes the portfolio question sharper rather than academic, and it links this comparison to the AVEVA versus Senseye comparison.

The main differences

Deployment is where Falkonry wins decisively. Falkonry offers edge, cloud, on-premises, air-gapped and sovereign deployment, which is a wider range than any other product in this category and genuinely useful for defence, utilities, critical infrastructure and isolated OT environments. TwinThread is a cloud platform on Azure with no on-premises or edge option stated, so it is cloud only in practice. If your data cannot leave the plant, this comparison is already over.

Connectivity. Falkonry describes itself as sensor-agnostic, working with your current telemetry, and names connection to existing SCADA and DCS systems and PLC controllers over Modbus and OPC UA. Naming actual protocols rather than claiming open connectivity is exactly the kind of statement that can be checked. Its own physics sensors, including high-rate power quality measurement, are optional rather than required. A historian is not explicitly mentioned, which is worth confirming if that is your primary source. TwinThread supplies no sensors and provides pre-built data agents that connect to data historians, PLCs, maintenance databases, smart devices and IIoT technology of any kind. The inclusion of maintenance databases matters, because reliability modelling needs failure history and not just process tags. But SCADA appears only as a target for setpoint write-back rather than as a stated data source, and OPC and MQTT are not mentioned at all, so protocol specifics need confirming.

Mechanism: neither is credited with failure prediction. Falkonry describes pattern recognition and anomaly detection with a described pipeline that ingests, normalises, aligns, enriches, analyses and visualises time series data, plus no-code and low-code tooling aimed at engineers rather than data scientists; no prediction model is described, so failure prediction could not be verified from published sources. TwinThread is more forthcoming on method but lands in the same place: Digital Threads are no-code logical workflows running in the background evaluating anomaly conditions, Intelligent Alerts are raised each time a process operates outside normal conditions, and the Model Factory automates machine learning model creation and deployment across many assets and selects the best-performing algorithm. Its AI Engine is described as spanning Predictive, Prescriptive, Generative and Agentic AI, with Predictive AI anticipating anomalies. Anticipating an anomaly is not predicting a failure, and it was deliberately not credited as one.

Breadth. TwinThread ships more: Twins providing a scalable asset hierarchy, a Virtual Operations Center, TwinThread Advisor, a Development API, curated datasets exposed to BI tools with Power BI named, and pre-built solutions named Asset Reliability, Uptime Optimization, Perfect Quality and Perfect Energy. Falkonry is narrower and says so: no asset hierarchy, no asset health scoring, no reliability method and no prescriptive maintenance workflow is described. It is a time series analytics platform, not an APM suite.

Not verified means the capability has not been checked for that product. It does not mean the product lacks it. Blank cells and unverified rows are never counted as a "no".

Which to choose

Choose Falkonry Time Series AI if you have time series data from SCADA, DCS or PLCs, you want engineers rather than data scientists to find patterns in it, and especially if cloud is prohibited. It is one of very few credible options for air-gapped, sovereign and defence environments. Falkonry is also the only product in this category with a free trial: a one-week offline trial on historical Parquet data, which lets a reliability engineer test whether predictive value exists in your data at all before committing to a larger programme. That is rare and practical. Resolve the ownership question in writing before contracting, confirm historian connectivity if that is your main source, and be clear you are buying an analytics platform rather than a maintenance management system.

Choose TwinThread if you want packaged solution templates on an industrial AI and digital twin platform rather than a blank canvas, you are comfortable cloud-only on Azure, and particularly if you already use AVEVA CONNECT and its Advanced Analytics capability, which makes you the group least exposed to the ownership change. Anyone who needs contractual and roadmap certainty in the near term should wait, because the product is very likely to be repositioned inside the AVEVA portfolio.

Ask AVEVA and TwinThread jointly, in writing, about deal status, roadmap, support commitments, pricing continuity and the relationship to both AVEVA Predictive Analytics and AVEVA Advanced Analytics on CONNECT. Neither product publishes a price. For the deployment constraint that divides them, see edge versus cloud for predictive maintenance, and digital twin and CMMS integration for what TwinThread's Twins do and do not cover.

Frequently asked questions

Unverified. IFS announced in August 2023 that it had signed an agreement to acquire Falkonry, with completion expected in Q4 2023, but no completion announcement could be verified, falkonry.com carries no IFS branding, the product is marketed independently with its own trial, and aggregator records show funding activity dated after the announcement. Ask the vendor directly.

Not as far as can be verified. TwinThread states that completion remains subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals and that the two operate as independent businesses until then. One aggregator asserts a July 2026 completion, which conflicts with that pending language and was not treated as confirmed.

Possibly. AVEVA Advanced Analytics on CONNECT has been described as powered by TwinThread, so the two already overlap technically, and AVEVA has now agreed to acquire the company. Resolve the positioning of TwinThread, AVEVA Advanced Analytics and AVEVA Predictive Analytics with both vendors before buying any of them.

Falkonry offers a free one-week offline trial using historical Parquet data, which is the only free trial in this category. For TwinThread no trial could be verified, and the pricing section the platform page links to carries no figures.
